How do you remember the way to your house? Where do dreams come from? It is your brain(大脑) that does these things. A British scientist showed that “sleep can improve one’s memory”. It’s not a dream for students to study when they sleep. In fact, your brain is working day and night. If you learn words before bed, a certain part of the brain may help you to remember the words while you are sleeping. What’s more, another scientist in the U.S.A. found that there was a “talent button (天才按钮)” in the human brain. It might make a person more talented.
There are more interesting things about the brain. Your brain uses less energy than a fridge light. Just two bananas can give the brain enough energy to work for a whole day. According to some scientists, yawning(打哈欠) keeps our brain “cool”, which makes us think quicker.
Here are some pieces of advice to keep a good brain:
● Eat healthy foods.
● Get a lot of playtime or exercise.
● Don’t drink or smoke.
● Use your brain a lot.

You may know the English letters A, B and C. But do you know there are people called ABCs? Do you know there is such a thing as “a banana person”? How strange! ABC means American-born Chinese. An ABC is a Chinese, but was born in the United States. Sometimes, people call an ABC a “banana person”. A banana is yellow outside. So, when a person is a “banana”, he or she is white inside—thinking like a Westerner and yellow outside—looking like a Chinese.
Usually, ABCs know little about China or the Chinese language. Some of them don’t speak Chinese. But if ABCs cannot speak Chinese, can we still call them Chinese people? Yes, of course. They are overseas(海外的) Chinese. These people may be citizens(公民) of another country like the US, Canada or Singapore. But they have Chinese blood(血统). Their parents, grandparents or even great grandparents were from China. They all have black eyes and black hair.
But they are not Chinese citizens. They are people of the People’s Republic of China. For example, we all know the famous pop singer Leehom Wang (王力宏). Chinese people love him, especially young people. But he is an American citizen.
4. “ABCs” in this passage means ?.
A. three English letters B. a kind of banana
C. Chinese born in America D. Americans born in China
5. Chinese in Western countries are called “banana persons” because ?.
A. their bodies are white inside but yellow outside
B. they think like Westerners but look like a Chinese
C. they were born in China but go to study in America
D. they like to eat bananas
6. Which of the sentences is WRONG about ABCs?
A. They are Chinese citizens.
B. They are overseas Chinese.
C. They may speak little Chinese.
D. ABCs may know little about China.
7. This passage mainly talks about ?.
A. different kinds of bananas B. overseas Chinese
C. the Nobel Prize D. the story of Leehom Wang
One of America’s biggest circuses(马戏团) will soon end elephants in its shows. The circus said it would stop by 2018. All its elephants will move to an animal conservation center. They will retire there. The circus is doing this because of public protests(抗议). One hundred years ago, it was OK for animals to perform for humans. However, not today. People are worried about animals. The circus will continue to use other animals, such as camels, dogs, horses, lions and tigers.
Animal rights groups have told the circuses not to use the elephants. They said that circus elephants have a bad life, said many elephants have painful bones and lung diseases. They want the elephants to retire now. Many places in the USA were asked not to use the elephants. This makes it hard for circuses to go around the country. The owners of the circus said it was hard to stop using their elephants. They understand the people love watching the elephant’s show.
