本课是北师大版初中英语九年级教材第5单元的第14课,话题为文学。本课主要通过听来学习故事中5位官员对于所触摸的大象肢体的不同部分的描述,评价和判断。为学生最终进行本单元的综合语言输出奠定初步的语言基础。

运用本课所学词汇,口头简单的描述大象的身体部位。【能力目标】
通过听获取信息,分析推断出国王让5位官员摸象的意图。

1. 课前准备:调试光盘与课件、给学生分组、为学生布置预习作业等;
2. 教具学具:光盘、大卡片等。
Step1. Warm-up
1. Let students make a discussion about fairy tales and choose several students to tell the fables they have read.
2. Take a look at the pictures of fairy tales and let students make up a story according to the pictures.
Step2. Reading
1. Talk about the story, The Blind Men and the Elephant, and answer the related questions.
What was special about the men?
Which part of the elephant did they touch?
What did they think the elephant was like?
2. Teach key words appearing in the story and explain their meaning and collocation to students.
3. After teaching new words, let students retell the story in their own language.
Example:
The men in the story were blind. One of them touched the trunk of the elephant. It was long and had holes at the end. He thought the elephant was like a hose.
Step3. Listening
1. Read the beginning part of the story and answer the following questions.
2. Listen to the rest of the play. Order the pictures according to the officers’ answers.
3. Listen again and complete the table.
4. Look at the details in Exercise 4. Which part of the elephant did each officer touch? Write numbers.
5. Underline the stating words and talk about the specific orders given by the king.
6. Look at the transcripts. Try to read it loudly and remember the details.
7. Take a look at the picture of elephant and indicate the English names of each body parts.
