B. Reading Comprehension
Girls can easily sad. If your friend is feeling blue and calls you, what will you do? Here are some tips on how you can make her smile again.
Listen to her. When people feel sad, they often have the feeling of needing to be heard. So, listen carefully to what she is saying and do nothing else. Your friend will surely thank you for being the shoulder she can cry on.
Once you are done with listening, you can offer some advice or remain silent and let her feel everything and let it all out by crying. As a friend, you might think you should give her some advice. But if you have no idea about what to say, just remain silent and be there for her.
In order to be able to help your friend in need, don't be sad for yourself. How can you help your friend when you are also feeling down?
A hug can make a difference in the world. It makes you feel warm and special. A hug makes you feel safe. So give your friend a hug when she needs it the most.
Spend more time with your friend who wants to be happy. Do things together like washing dishes, cleaning, or going out for fun. The more time you spend together, the stronger your friendship will become.
Sometimes, it is much better that you avoid a crying friend in your life. But by doing so, you are also keeping your friend at a distance and will make her wonder if you are her true friend. If you are there when she needs you, your friendship will be much stronger.

A. We should ask her why she feels sad.
B. We should say something nice to her.
C. We should spend time listening to her.
D. We should give her some good advice.
3.We can learn from the passage that ________.
A. hugging a sad friend can make you feel warm and special
B. your sad friend may feel much better if you are also sad
C. it's not a good idea to be silent facing a sad friend
D. giving a hug to a sad friend is very helpful
4.The last paragraph shows that ________.
A. every dog has its day
B. a friend in need is a friend indeed
C. where there's a will, there is a way
D. two heads are better than one
C. Reading for fun
Talking is such a simple task, right? Not exactly. Aside from being the enemy of anyone who recalls having a cellphone before the age of 5, or who prefers the company of their dog, it’s a delicate balancing act of you and another person trying desperately not to offend one another. Sure, you can debrief on the weather, the traffic, your resume, or the election. Unfortunately, outside of getting into a full on conversation about your recent cataracts diagnosis, you’re basically out of topics. Now what?
I’ve taken it upon myself to give you a step-by-step guide.
1. Get to know your audience before meeting them
This is also known as light social media stalking. What are some of the person’s interests? Do they align with your own? Maybe you like the same football team, or have a mutual friend. Wouldn’t it be cool if you both attended that Anthony Green concert back in October? Premeditated similarities always lead to more meaningful follow-up questions.
2. Figure out your fears
Sitting cowardly in the corner with your arms crossed doesn’t exactly say “nice to meet you.” Despite my own urge to avoid the milk aisle when I spot someone from high school, there are typically specific fears associated with that possible encounter. Work on identifying those fears. Are you embarrassed of the way that you are dressed? Maybe you’re unsure how to greet this colleague: handshake terms or hugging terms? Narrow in on your anxieties. There’s always a logical solution lurking behind your fear.
3. Repeat their name
People are like dogs. They’re generally happy to see you, and they love to hear their name. If you know a person’s name, attach it to the end of every greeting and departure. The goal is to avoid sounding robotic. If you don’t know a person’s name, that is the perfect opportunity to introduce yourself, and ask them for their name. Just remember to repeat their name back to them. Seriously, it’s never too much.
4. Don’t be afraid to expand
I always assumed no one would be interested in hearing about that time when I lost my grandmother at Walgreens. Surprisingly enough, people respond to enthusiastic storytelling. A quick, two-word answer such as “sure is” is just a dead-end under construction, so elaborate a little. As long as you think it’s entertaining, they’ll think it’s entertaining.
5. Show them a picture
Every comedy from the 80’s had a proud parent of at least 11 miracles, and a wallet full of their headshots. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, feel free to show off your proof of purchase. Whether it’s your kid, a dog, a car, that crepe or those pants, it will always enhance your story.
6. Do not repeat them
Them: It’s a nice party.
You: It is a nice party!
Them: Did you take Route One?
You: I did take Route One!
Them: Don’t you think the weather is lovely?
You: The weather is lovely!
See what I mean? This is going nowhere fast.
7. Open up a bit
If the conversation is going well, feel free to reveal something more personal about yourself. Being honest and light-hearted about a recent shortcoming humanizes you. “I used to be a quarterback myself, but I’m a big fan of donuts… if you couldn’t tell.” Just be sure to follow up with how you’re working on the issue. Much like the traditional interview question what is your biggest weakness, you’ll want to end your story with a concrete solution.
8. Change your mindset
If you approach small talk with the idea that it is going to be boring and full of dead space, it will. You already know all of the basics. Make eye contact. Be polite. Ask follow-up questions. Now, assume that this person will get a kick out of you, and your approach will be a lot more… approachable.
9. Time’s up
Finally, learn to identify exit cues. If someone is physically leaning in the opposite direction, or halfway out the door, it’s probably time to wrap it up. Looking at a watch or making eye contact with another colleague is very rude, but (unfortunately) widely accepted. So, learn to close strong. It’s been nice talking to them. You should get together. Exchange contact information, and if you can, bring them along as you transition into your next conversation.
