这里的suppose可以看成连词,意思是imagine what will/would happen if ...。
Supposing/Suppose you fall and hurt yourself when you're out alone in the mountains?

(do/does/did/have/has...)+主语”这一句式。
也不如此”,则可以用“Neither/Nor+be/情态动词/助动词(do/does/did/have/has...)+主语”这一句式。
Mary never does any reading in the evening, nor does Jane.

(1) 在这个复合句中,way后含有一个由that或in which引导的定语从句,that或in which在从句中作状语,修饰名词the way,已被省略。
The way that/which/不填he explained to us was quite simple.
The way that/in which/不填he explained the sentence to us was not difficult to understand.

I'd much rather deal with a man than with a woman.

“ The 13th of June, 1325, I left Tangier, my birthplace, with the intention of making the pilgrimage(朝圣) to Mecca... to leave my friends, to abandon my home as birds abandon their nests.” So begins an old manuscript in a library in Paris—the travel diary of Ibn Battuta.
Almost two centuries before Columbus, this young Moroccan set off for Mecca, returning home three decades later as one of history’s great travelers. Driven by curiosity, he journeyed to remote corners of the Islamic world, traveling through 44 modern countries, three times as far as Marco Polo. Little celebrated in the West, his name is well known among Arabs. In his hometown of Tangier, a square, a hotel, a cafe, a ferry boat, and even a hamburger are named after him.
Ibn Battuta stayed in Mecca as a student for several years, but the urge to travel soon took over. In one adventure, he traveled to India seeking profitable employment with the sultan—the Muslim ruler of Delhi. On the way, he described his group being attacked in the open country by 80 men on foot, and two horsemen: “...I was hit by an arrow and my horse bu another, but God in his grace preserved me...” In Delhi, the sultan gave him the position of judge, based on his previous study at Mecca. But the sultan had an unpredictable character, and Ibn Battuta looked for an opportunity to leave. When the sultan offered to finance a trip to China, he agreed. Ibn Battuta set off in three ships, but misfortune struck while he was still on the shore. A sudden storm grounded and broke up two ships, scattering(散播) treasure and drowning many people and horses. As he watched, the third ship, with all his belongings and slaves—one carrying his child—was carried out to sea and never heard from again.
After a lifetime of amazing adventures, Ibn Battua was finally ordered by the Sultan of Morocco to return home to share his wisdom with the world. Fortunately, he agreed and wrote a book that has been translated into numerous languages, allowing people everywhere to read about his unparalleled journeys.
What can we learn about Ibn Battuta from the passage?
He had great interest in the Islamic world.
He returned to his homeland to write a book.

The Sultan of Delhi gave Ibn Battuta a position of judge because .

Ibn Battuta had traveled to many countries
Which is the best title for the passage?
The Learned Ibn Battuta
A Visitor to Mecca
C The Travels of Ibn Battuta
D. Desire for Adventure

Culture and Cuisine
The United States is known for jazz and blue jeans. But travel to Paris and ask your average French citizen about American cuisine(烹饪)and he’s likely to an answer, “McDonalds.” Ask the same thing of any American citizen on any American street and I’m afraid you’d get the same answer, or something close to it.
Hamburgers and hotdogs and fries are all fine, but with American malls and other outlets standardizing everything from clothing to food, the sad truth is that American cuisine is becoming more homogeneous—all the same—no matter where you live. True, many Americans are eating more varied foods these days, but these are largely the cuisines of immigrant groups, and they are quite likely to be affected by homogenization of American cuisine.
So what exactly is American cuisine? Well, to some extent it is a reflection of our melting pot culture, meaning that Europeans made huge contributions in the form of wheat, dairy products, pork, beef and poultry. But American cuisine also includes products that once were known only to the New World, including potatoes, corn, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and peanuts.
The one region of the country where you still find all these things in daily use is the Deep South. The South lost the Civil War, but children of the southerners are winning the battle to preserve and advance their cooking traditions—and in this case one of the few cuisines can truly be called American, which is why we’re pleased to have Low Country cuisine in this issue of food creation. That’s right, grits and gravy are back in a big way in cities like Charleston and Savannah. Truth is, they never really left, but up until a decade ago Low Country cuisine was more common at home than in restaurants.
In fact, a large number of tourists now go to the lower Atlantic region in order to experience this extraordinary cuisine for themselves. Time will tell whether Low Country cuisine becomes popular in other regions of the country in the way that, say, Italian cuisine has, but it's amazing and heartening to see one of our true cultural treasures enjoying renewed popularity in these increasingly homogeneous times.
23. According to the passage, American cuisine impresses people as being __________
A. dull and changeless
B. rich and various
C. popular and delicious
D. disagreeable and unpleasant
24. It can be seen that the writer feels regretful that __________
A. cuisines of other countries play a more important role in America
B. American cuisine has become increasingly lacking in variety
C. American cuisine tends to vary because of immigration
D. American cuisine is being changed by foreign cuisines
25. From the passage, we know that grits and gravy__________
A. were cooked with new materials after the Civil War
B. are gaining popularity in the south of America
C. were more popular over ten years ago
D. are seldom served in restaurants
26. What's the writer's attitude towards the renewal of Low Country cuisine in America?
A. Concerned and cautious.
B. Hopeless and doubtful.
C. Positive and supportive.
D. Critical and disapproving.

The Enigma(谜)of Beauty
The search for beauty spans centuries and continents. Paintings of Egyptians dating back over 4,000 years both men and women painting their nail and wearing makeup. In 18th-century France, wealthy noblemen wore large wigs(假发)of long, white hair to make themselves attractive. Today, people continue to devote a lot of time and money to their appearance.
There is at least one good reason for the desire to be attractive: beauty is power. Studies suggest that good-looking people make more money, get called on more often in class, and are regarded as friendlier.
But what exactly is beauty? It’s difficult to describe it clearly, and yet we know it when we see it. And our awareness of it may start at a very early age. In one set of studies, six-month-old babies were shown a series of photographs. The faces on the pictures had been rated for attractiveness by a group of college students. In the studies, the babies spent more time looking at the attractive faces than the unattractive ones.
The idea that even babies can judge appearance makes perfect sense to many researchers. In studies by psychologies, men consistently showed a preference for women with larger eyes, fuller lips, and a smaller nose and chin while women prefer men with large shoulders and a narrow waist. According to scientists, the mind unconsciously tells men and women that these traits –the full lips, clear skin, strong shoulders----equal health and genetic well-being.
Not everyone thinks the same way, however. “Our hardwiredness can be changed by all sorts of expectations-----mostly cultural.” Says C. Loring Brace, an anthropologist at the University of Michigan. What is considered attractive in one culture might not be in another. Look at most Western fashion magazines: the women on the pages are thin. But is this “perfect” body type for women worldwide? Scientists’ answer is no; what is considered beautiful is subjective and varies around the world. They found native peoples in southeast Peru preferred shapes regarded overweight in Western cultures.
For better or worse, beauty plays a role in our lives. But it is extremely difficult to describe exactly what makes one person attractive to another. Although there do seem be certain physical traits considered universally appealing, it is also true that beauty does not always keep to a single, uniform standard. Beauty really is, as the saying goes, in the eyes of the beholder.
27. People’s ideas about beauty_________.
A. have existed since ancient times
B. can be easily described
C. have little influence on a person’s success
D. are based upon strict criteria
28. In Paragraph 3, the babies in the study_______.
A. were rated for their appearance
B. were entered in a beauty contest
C. were shown photos of a group of college students
D. were able to tell attractive faces from unattractive ones
29. The underlined word “traits” in Paragraph 4 probably means______.
A. qualities B. measurements C. judgments D. Standards
30. We can learn from the passage that________.
A. the ideas of beauty vary as people grow up
B. the search for beauty is rooted in lack of confidence
C. the standards for beauty are based on scientific researches
D. the understanding of beauty depends on cultural backgrounds

Virtual(虚拟) Teams
Virtual teams are a great way to enable teamwork in situations where people are not sitting in the same office at the same time.__31__This is particularly so for business that use virtual teams to build global presence, or need less common skills or knowledge from people who are unwilling to travel.
Virtual teams are governed by the same basic principles as traditional teams.__32__It is the way the team members communicate. They rely on special communication channels enabled by modern technologies, such as emails, faxes, and teleconferences, and alike. Due to more limited communication channels, the success of virtual teams is much more sensitive to the type of project the group works on, what people are selected, and how the team is managed.
__33__One challenging case is the projects that rely heavily on integrated work. That is to say, when each person’s work depends significantly on what someone else is doing at the same moment, like in a sports team, there is an ongoing heavy exchange of information in real time, and the tasks have to go through a strict order within a short time.
Not everyone can perform well in a virtual team environment.__34__Another important quality is communication skills. The team members must be able to communicate clearly and positively.
Managers of virtual teams need to pay much attention to having clear goals, performance standards, and communication rules. People have various assumptions on what to expect from each other.__35__
One of the biggest challenges of virtual teams is building trust between the team members. Trust is important for unblocking communication between members and increasing motivation of each person in the team. The issue of trust needs special attention at any stage of team existence.
Yet, there is one significant difference.
Not every type of project is suitable for a virtual team.
A virtual team can choose whatever project they like to work on.
The members must be self-motivated and able to work independently.
Such teams are now widely used by companies and organizations to cut business costs.
Members of virtual teams communicate quite well although they never meet face-to-face.
To avoid misunderstanding, clear rules that everyone understands and agrees on are necessary.

1. For example, suppose in biology you were studying how plants produce, then you could find an English text about this on the Internet.
这里的suppose可以看成连词,意思是imagine what will/would happen if ...。
Supposing/Suppose you fall and hurt yourself when you're out alone in the mountains?
Suppose they did not believe in,what would they do to him?
(1) suppose

(2) be supposed to必须,应该

(3) providing/provided+(that)clause假如……
2. It is the same with reading.

句子中It is the same with 是“……
(1)—Tom is very weak and lazy
—So it is with his wife.
(2)—Tom is from America, but he can speak Chinese very well.
—It is the same with John.
(1) So it is with sb/sth=It is the same with sb/sth… …
也如此”,可以用“So+be/情态动词/助动词(do/does/did/have/has...)+主语”这一句式。
也不如此”,则可以用“Neither/Nor+be/情态动词/助动词(do/does/did/have/has...)+主语”这一句式。
Mary never does any reading in the evening, nor does Jane.
If Dick can finish the work on time,so can I.

3.Some pre-reading activities ask you to recall your knowledge about subject, some teach you a few of new words you will find in the text, some ask you to glance at the way the text is organized.
(1) 在这个复合句中,way后含有一个由that或in which引导的定语从句,that或in which在从句中作状语,修饰名词the way,已被省略。
The way that/which/不填he explained to us was quite simple.
The way that/in which/不填he explained the sentence to us was not difficult to understand.
考查的方式 ① 选择that/in which ② 选择way作先行词。
用这种方法in this way/with this method/by this means
4. I would rather hear a book on a cassette than read it.
此句中含有would rather...than...

I would rather stay at home than go out with you.
I'd rather take the slowest train than go there by air.(=I would take the slowest train rather than go there by air.)
would rather
I would rather not tell him the truth.
I'd much rather deal with a man than with a woman.
(2) would rather
(3) prefer to do... rather than do...
rather than 而不是
5. I find it hard to concentrate when there are a lot of people talking near me.

I find it important to learn a foreign language well.
I consider it possible to have a talk with him.
此句型完整的形式是:主语+think/feel/consider/find...+it+n./adj.+for/of sb to do...。
I think it important for him to learn to get along well with others.
I have made it clear that I object to the plan.
(3) 当宾语补足语是no use,no good,useless等时,真正的宾语要用动名词。
例如:
I consider it no use talking with him;he won't listen to others.
I like/hate it that/when...
I like it when there are friends around me.
6. Just as when reading English it is not necessary to understand every word,so when listening you do not need to understand every word either.

例如:

His journey were less important than Marco Polo’s.

The Sultan of Delhi gave Ibn Battuta a position of judge because .
Ibn Battuta had studied in Mecca
Ibn Battuta had been a judge before
Ibn Battuta had worked as a translator

1. 掌握虚拟语气运用;
2. 掌握常考虚拟语气的解题方法;
If I had time,I would attend the meeting.
If I were you,I should seize the chance to go abroad.
If you had taken my advice, you would not have failed in the exams.
“were to+动词原形”; c. “should+动词原形”, 主句谓动用“would/ should/ could/might+动词原形”。例如:
If you came tomorrow,we would have the meeting.
If it were to rain tomorrow, the sports meeting would be put off.
If he should not come tomorrow,we should put off the meeting till next Monday.
If you had taken my advice, you would know what to do now.
在条件句中可省略 if,把were,had,should 提到句首,变为倒装句式。例如:
If I were at school again,I would study harder.
→Were I at school again,I would study harder.
If you had come earlier, you would catch the bus.
→Had you come earlier, you would catch the bus.
If it should rain tomorrow,we would not go climbing.
→Should it rain tomorrow,we would not go climbing.
Were it not for the expense,I would go abroad now. Weren't it for the expense,I would go abroad now.
常用的介词有with,without,but for。例如:
What would you do with a million dollars?(=if you had a million dollars)
We couldn't have finished the work ahead of time without your help.(=if we hadn't got your help)
Without your help,we couldn't have finished the work ahead of time.(=But for your help,...=If it had not been for your help,...=Had it not been for your help,...)
He would have gone to the party, but he was ill yesterday.
The firemen arrived in time. Otherwise the house would have been burnt to the ground.
Given more attention, the trees could have grown better.
a. 过去完成时(宾从动作先于wish);c. could/ would/ might+动词原形,即过去将来时(宾从动作后于wish)。例如:
I wish I remembered his address.
I wish I had studied hard.
The doctor suggested/insisted that she(should)stay in bed for a few days.
The look on his face suggested that he was unhappy.
Mike insisted that he was right.
(3) would (had) rather,would just as soon,would sooner,would prefer+
I would rather you didn't go there.
If only I were a bird!
It is desired/suggested/proposed/necessary/important/strange/natural/a pity/essential+that 从句,从句中的谓语动词用“should+动词原形”,should 可以省略。例如:
It is suggested that the meeting(should)be put off till next week.
It is strange that he(should)have acted toward his parents like that.(act 发生在主句谓语动词be之前时,要用should have+过去分词)
It's strange that he didn't come yesterday.
It's a pity that you can't dance.
My idea is that we should think it over before accepting it.
We all agreed to his suggestion that we should go to Dalian for sightseeing.
She loves the boy as if he were her own son.
2. 在in order that,so that引导的目的状语从句中,经常用“could/might/may/can+动词原形”表示虚拟语气。例如:

Appeal to Emotion(情感)
My childhood left three months ago on a plane to Austria.
It was a 1 day when my baby cousins moved away. My cousins were a fundamental part of my life; 2 they were not with me, they were on my mind. They brought back the untroubled days of my childhood, 3 games, adventures and silliness, but they also helped 4 me from an at-times selfish teenager into a responsible adult.
My aunt and uncle moved here from Boston with their 1-year-old daughter Yasmeen. They lived in an apartment on the side of our house and I was 5 to have our family, especially a baby girl, so close to us. 1. 掌握虚拟语气运用;
2. 掌握常考虚拟语气的解题方法;
He got up early so that he could catch the first bus.
3. 在in case that,for fear that 引导的目的状语从句中,经常用“should+动词原形”表示虚拟语气,should不可省略。例如:
She puts a coat over the baby for fear that he should catch a cold.
If only I could operate the computer.
If only he had known it.
It is high/about time that...
It's high/about time that children went/should go to school.
1. What would have happened,____________ as far as the river bank?
A. Bob had walked farther B. if Bob should walk farther
C. had Bob walked farther D. if Bob walked farther
2. It's high time that we____________ home and____________ supper now.
A. go;have B. went;had C. go;should have D. went;to have
3. I was really anxious about you. You____________ home without a word.
A. mustn't leave B. shouldn't have left
C. couldn't have left D. needn't leave
4. He hesitated for a moment before he kicked the ball, otherwise he____________ a goal.
A. had scored B. scored C. would score D. would have scored
5. I wish I____________ the book yesterday,but I was too busy.
A. had finished to write B. had finished writing
C. could have finished to write D. might finish writing

Our 17 has made me a better person—a more patient person, with the ability to 18 endless questions and spilled(洒) juice;an 19 person, able to have fun and be happy with others; a role model, 20 the babies ideas about right and wrong, and a compassionate person, able to forgive and love.

第一节
Hi Chris,
Good news! There will be a lecture in our school this Friday afternoon. Professor Zhang from University of Agriculture will tell us about the history and spread of Chinese tea. This will be followed by a tea party and you can taste different kinds of tea while chatting with teachers and students of our school. I wonder if you want to participate in it. Don’t worry about the language. I’ll be with you and explain what you don’t understand.
If you do not have any prior appointment then, I am looking forward to your coming.
Yours,
Joe
第二节
March 29th, Sunday Fine
Today some classmates and I served at Capital Library as volunteers. At 9 o’clock this morning, we gathered together at the gate of the library. After getting into the library, we were first trained by a librarian on how to operate the computers to borrow or return books so that we could help readers later. Then, wearing the volunteer uniform and volunteer identity card, we got down to our work. Some of ua helped with shelving books and some offered assistance to the people who had problems with using the computers. All of us took our tasks seriously and tried to do them all.
Time passed quickly. Before we knew it, it was time to say goodbye to the staff. On the way back, we shared our feeling happily. When doing volunteer work, we did our part in helping others. Meanwhile, it promoted our social awareness. We all believe volunteering is rewarding and look forward to more of it.
