What’s this in English?是特殊疑问句，用来询问某个物品用英语怎么说。类似的句型有：What’s that in English?（那个用英语怎么说？），其答语均用“It's+a/an+单数可数名词.”结构。其中的it不能用this或that代替。

（1）it's是it is的缩写形式，意为“它是”。其中it为人称代词，意为“它”，没有远近之分，可以用来代替this/that，也可用来指代上文中提到的表示单数名词的事物。

（2）an是不定冠词，意为“（表示未曾提到的）一（人，事，物）”，用于以元音因素开头的单数可数名词之前。
This is an apple.

a和an在英语中被称为不定冠词。不定冠词a(an)的常见用法如下：
（1）表示数量“一”。
如：a pen一支钢笔 an orange一个橙子
（2）笼统地指某人或某物，但不具体说明。
（3）泛指一类事物。
（4）表示首次提到的人或物（常用于介绍用语中）。Language Points【辨析】不定冠词a与an
a用在以辅音音素开头的单词或字母前，an用在以元音音素开头的单词或字母前。
如：a key(一把钥匙)、a map(一张地图)，an apple(一个苹果)、an egg(一个鸡蛋)、an hour(一个小时)等。
【注意】元音音素、辅音音素指的是读音，而不是元音字母或辅音字母。Exercise一、根据首字母或汉语提示完成句子。
