When I first went to?Britain, a lot of things seemed strange to me. For example, people drove on the left side of the road and many people carried an umbrella all the time. There were also many other things that I found really??▲???.
The first thing I noticed was how polite British people were. When I got on the bus, the driver would greet me; when people got off the bus, they would say “Thank you” to the driver; when I went into a shop, I would be greeted by a smiling salesman who would say, “Can I help you?”
The family I stayed with were very nice, but their house was full of oddities (怪现象). Firstly, there were carpets (地毯) everywhere, even in the bathroom. Also, the bathroom was full of surprises. The first time I tried to wash my hands I burned myself. The cold and hot water came out of different taps (水龙头)! Then, when I tried to dry my hair I couldn't find a socket (插座) for my hairdryer. Maybe that wasn't such a big surprise. More surprising was the fact that British people didn't take their shoes off when they went into a house — can you imagine?
I guess that for British people all of these things are normal. It's only when you visit a foreign country that you realize that what you think is normal is not. Normality depends on where you are.

One of the hottest places on the earth is?Death Valley. It's a desert valley in?North America. The animals in?Death Valley?don't use technology to keep cool. They have special abilities that help them live there.
The kangaroo rat is one animal that lives in?Death Valley. During the day in?Death Valley, it gets hotter than 100°F. The kangaroo rat rests all day in a hole in the ground. It covers the hole with grass to keep out the heat. The kangaroo rat comes out at night when it is cooler. This little rat is also very good at conserving (节约) water. It gets all the water it needs from the food it eats. Some kangaroo rats never take a drink of water in their whole lives!
The sun makes the desert sand very hot. Animals, like snakes, get too hot if they lie on the hot sand too long. One snake, called the sidewinder, can solve this problem. When it travels, the sidewinder bends (使弯曲) its body into a “W” shape. Then it uses the bottom (底部的) parts of the “W” like legs and walks sideways (向一侧). That way it touches only a little of the sand at a time, so the hot sand doesn't burn the snake. This strange way of moving is how the sidewinder got its name.
A lot of water in the desert is too salty for most animals to drink. All water has some salt in it. As the desert heat dries up pools of water, the salt is left behind. The remaining water in these pools can be much saltier than the ocean. One kind of fish, the desert pupfish, can live in these salty pools because it can drink the salt water.

Last week I was at my desk in the classroom as usual. I was very tired, and couldn’t concentrate (集中注意力) on the lesson. I looked around and noticed a door behind me. “I’m sure it wasn’t there before!” I said to myself. Very quickly I got up, opened the door, and saw a long hallway. Soon I found myself in an underground room. There were a lot of strange machines, and people moved around in white coats. Suddenly I heard a scream (尖叫) from another room, and I began to feel afraid. Just then a tall man with white hair came towards me.
“I am a professor (教授),” he told me. “How nice to see you! Did you come to help with our little experiment (实验)?” I didn’t like the professor, and I didn’t want to stay. I tried to run away, but my legs couldn’t move. He came closer. “Don’t worry,” he said, smiling. “We’re just doing a few tests ...” “No!” I shouted. “No test!” He put his hand on my arm and repeated, “A few tests, tests, tests ...”
Just then I woke up. I was back in the classroom, and someone was shaking my arm. I listened to the teacher. “Tests this week and next week,” she said. “That’s better,” I thought.

His family was doing a spring cleaning of their pretty wooden house in preparation for the spring festival of Songkran. The women cooked Thai food for the next day’s ceremonies (仪式). That smelled wonderful! Under the bright sun, we men went to the river and brought lots of sand to the village wat (寺庙). The wat was a beautiful Buddhist building where the monks (和尚) lived. We left the sand near the wat. Worawut said I’d soon find out why.

We all dressed up and went to the village wat. The monks waited with their bowls at a long table. We filled their bowls with rice and all kinds of delicious food. Everyone smiled and music played as the monks ate.
After that, we attended the bathing ceremony. We poured water over stone Buddhas. Young people poured some sweet smelling water into the hands of older people to show respect for them.
Outside, everyone used the sand we had brought to make sand pagodas (佛塔). We put flowers, flags, and stones on ours. It was beautiful!

On March 15, Dunes View Middle School held a contest (比赛) for school bands. Student bands tried out for the chance to perform at the school picnic, which will be held at the end of June. The winner of the contest was the band called Four Square.
“We’re very proud that we won the contest and are excited to perform at the picnic,” says Emily Zandt, who plays the guitar in the band. “And since we hope to perform someday at other local places, like restaurants and parks, this will be a great first step.”
The contest was the creation of music teacher Mr. Lopez and drama teacher Ms. Cho. They thought of the idea while discussing recent years’ school picnics.
“The picnic is one of the biggest events of the year, but it has become a bit boring,” says Ms. Cho. “The activities are the same every year. We thought that a performance by a student band would make the school picnic more interesting and fun.”
Mr. Lopez, Ms. Cho, and three other teachers judged (评判) the contest. Eight student bands attended the audition (试音). There were several rock bands, a folk band, and even a jazz band.

Dear Dale,
Glad to hear from you. Now let me introduce some Chinese customs to you.
In China, when we meet others for the first time, we usually say “Hello” and shake hands. We don’t hug or kiss each other. When visitors come to our homes, we always serve some fruit and offer some tea. But it’s not polite to pour too much or too little tea into the cup. When we accept gifts, we must use both hands to take them. And we usually say “It’s unnecessary” before finally accepting a gift to show politeness. If we are invited to a party, we are supposed to arrive on time.
Anyhow, different cultures have different customs. Could you please tell me some customs in your country?
Yours,
Li Hua
