Lesson 43 Let’s Clean Up!

Step1. Come to “TALK ABOUT IT.”
Step2. Show the new words to the students. Let the students read the words first. Then let them read after the tape.
Step3 Read the text and check the answers silently. At the same time, answer the following questions:
1. Where are Jenny, Brian and Danny?
2. How’s the weather?
3 .What do English people call “rubbish”?
4. What is Jenny studying in class this week?
5. What does the teacher think of Jenny’s idea?
Step4 Read the text in roles loudly.
Then let some students act it out in front of the class.
Step5 Explain some language points to the class.
Then ask the students to make up sentences with them.
1. But look at all of the rubbish!
2. Somebody should pick up that garbage!
3. It would take too long.
4. Each student could clean up a bit of the school yard.
5. We would finish cleaning in an hour.
Step6. Come to “LET’S DO IT.”
Work in teams with three or four people.
Let some students act their dialogue out in front of the class.
Step7 Homework
1. Finish off the exercises in activity book.
2. Go on the next reading in the student book.

Step1. Greet the whole class as usual.
Step2. Warming up.
Show the picture on the blackboard and ask students what the people in the picture are doing. In Lesson57 we learned what Jenny, Brian and Danny do with the rubbish. Today we’ll learn more about how students help clean up their school.
设计思路:通过呈现一些北美国家学生为环保做一些事的图片,让学生切身感受北美国家学生的环保意识,有利于学生对课文内容的理解。
Step3. New words.
Teach the new words and expressions:
less environment waste fix toilet least throw away take out
设计思路: 由于本课的新单词较多,学生独立阅读课文较难。通过教新单词有利于学生完成本课的阅读教学。
Step4. Listening
1. Play the audiotape. Have the students listen to the tape with the following questions and then answer them. Before listening to the tape,Show the questions on the blackboard, let the students master the main idea of the text.
Questions:
Why do many students in North America want to join “environment club”?
What does environment clubs encourage students to do for no-garbage lunches?
What does no-car day mean?
What can people do instead of driving a car?
How much water will a leaking toilet waste an hour?
2. Correct the answer.
设计思路:英语新课程标准要求运用“任务型”的教学方法。因此在听录音之前,先呈现要回答的问题,让学生带着问题去听录音,这样学生就会有意识地抓住要听的主要内容,提高学生的听效果。同时,培养学生的倾听能力。
Step5. Reading.
Have the class to read the text. And point out some important language points of the text.
1. What can you do to stop pollution?
2. Let’s work together to make it clean.
3. Many students help their schools make less pollution.
4. Here are some things students in North American do.
5. Environment clubs encourage students to bring their lunches in reusable bags and dishes.
6. Danny would you please take out the garbage?
Explain the difficulties in each phrase, then give some other examples to let the students practice orally.
设计思路:英语课堂教学要求全面提高学生的听、说、读、写的能力。本句型中有一些重要的语法点经常出现在练习中。而且学生往往不容易记住,因此教师有必要讲解其中的知识点,并通过举例进一步达到知识的运用。
Step6. Discussing
Divide the class into small groups. Ask each group to discuss, in English, the following topics:
1. According to the reading, what things do North American students do to stop pollution or to make less pollution?
(Have no-garbage lunches! Have no-car days! Turn off the water!)
2. What have you done at school to stop pollution?
3. What can you do to make less pollution?
Ask some groups to share their ideas with the rest of the class.
设计思路:通过讨论北美国家的学生利用一切可行的减少污染的方法来进行环保,然后让学生用英语讨论自己所生活的环境污染问题,激发学生自主为保护环境做贡献,培养责任感。同时达到课标要求全面提高学生的听、说、读、写的能力,锻炼学生英语口头表达的能力。
Step7.Task
Do a project on protecting the environment. Encourage the Ss to work on the project. Work in groups, think of so many ways to protect the environment. Teacher walks around to offer help.

Class Opening:
1.Check the homework.
2.Ask two or three students to read aloud their written proposals to their parents or neighbours. Encourage others to add their own suggestions.
Student Book:
Step 1. Lead in: What kinds of rubbish do you often throw every day? Can you name them? What can be recycled? Ask the students to have a discussion about the kind of rubbish and at the same time new words can be taught by talking about some given pictures.
Step 2. Play the audiotape. Ask the students to listen to the tape while thinking about the question:
What makes the most garbage?
Step 3. Immersion Reading:
1. Have the students read the dialogue quickly and finish Ex.2 in the activity book.
2. Read the dialogue carefully again and have a further study about it. Encourage the students to solve their problems in the reading by co-operative learning.
Step 5. Focus Explanation and Practice:
In order to help the students understand the dialogue correctly and master the mastery contents, according to their study, I’ll explain and practice some of the following language points:
1. Jenny has emptied two bags of garbage onto the floor.
empty 可作形容词或动词,意思是“空的;倒空”。
E.g. There is an empty bottle on the table.
Can you empty the plates for me?
2. Can I help you sort it?
提供帮助常用句式: Can I help you? / What can I do for you? 答语: Yes, please. / No, thanks.
sort 可作名词或动词, 意思是“类;分类”。
E.g. What sort of people are they?
We must sort out the bad apples from the good.
3. That’s everything that isn’t glass, metal, plastic or paper.That isn’t glass , metal, plastic or paper是定语从句,用来修饰先行词everything,关系代词只能用that, 不能用which.
4. Good heavens! So much garbage!
good heavens意思是“天哪”,表示惊讶、不相信等。
5. That’s the same weight as a small car!
the same …as意思是“和……一样”。 same前必须加the。For example:
They have the same population(人口) as we do.
反义词组为: be different from / than/ to… “与……不同”。
Step 6. Play the audiotape. Ask the students to listen and repeat, then act out the dialogue in groups of three.
Class Activity: Come to “Unit Project”.
1. Ask the students to read the structions of the project with some questions, such as: What did this project ask you to do first? Why? Help them make clear the specific requirements, goals and expectant result of the project.
2. Collect the garbage which the students have picked up in the school yard and their neighbourhood.
3. Divide the class into small groups. Provide each group with five empty bags and some of the garbage that has been collected. Ask students to sort the garbage into separate bags-- paper, plastic, metal, glass and others. Require them to use their English vocabulary.
4. Compare numbers of the garbage which they’ve sorted.
5. Have students work in the same groups or in new groups. Each group will discuss and make a poster about what things they can do to help reduce pollution in the world.
If the project cannot be finished in one lesson, it can be continued in the next lesson.

Step 1. Remind the students:
1. What kinds of rubbish do you throw every day? Can you name them?
2. What can be recycled?
Step 2. Work in groups
Let the students go to the dustbin to collect some garbage and take them to the classroom.
Ask the students name them and compare the qualities.
Let the students look up the books and the dictionaries when they are in trouble. Help them when they can’t express correctly.
Step 3. Listening
Listen to the tape finish Exercise 2 in the activity book.
1. Every year, each person in North America makes about 1000 kilograms of garbage.
2. Plastic makes the most garbage.
3. In just one day, Americans throw out 136 million kilograms of packaging.
4. Packaging makes the most garbage.
Step 4. Reading
Read the text and check the answers.
Let the students read the text in roles. Then ask several students to act out the dialogue.
Step 5. Come to “PROJECT”
Bring the students to pick up the garbage in the school yard. Put the garbage into bags and bring it to school for our project.
Take a walk around your neighbourhood, take a bag with you and pick up any garbage you see. Wear gloves, because garbage in dirty.
Now sort the garbage into paper, plastic, metal, glass and others.
Then compare the garbage in school yard with that in neighbourhood.
Have students work in the same groups or in new groups. Each group will make a poster about what things they can do to help reduce pollution in the world.
