The general Allotment Act, passed in 1887 by the United States Congress, was expected to help Native Americans. The Act called for breaking up tribal reservations(部落居留地) and turning them into family-sized farms. Each farm would be given to an individual Native American.
The government thought that Native Americans would be better off if they forgot their tribal organizations and their tribal languages. The government expected Native Americans who owned land and farmed for a living to become more like other Americans. But it didn't work out that way. The Native Americans were used to living in tribal groups and sharing with each other. They had always thought of land as something that belonged to the whole tribe, rather than to individuals.
With their families scattered on separate farms, many Native Americans were dissatisfied. The land they were given was often poor, and they hadn't the skill to farm it well. Poverty and poor health increased, while the Native American stuck to their old languages and customs. Eventually the government realized that the division of reservation land had made things worse rather than better for Native Americans.
The Indian Reorganization Act, passed in 1943, reversed the government's policy. This Act said that all Native American land should be owned by tribes, rather than by individuals. The new Act encouraged tribal organizations to take responsibility for running tribal affairs. The Act also provided money, which tribes could borrow to buy more land or to start business.
Economic conditions have improved for Native Americans. Many tribes run successful manufacturing, mineral leasing, hotels and gambling business. Yet problems of unemployment and poor health still exist. Today Native Americans face a double challenge. They must continue to improve their economic and political position, while at the same time preserving their lands and cultural heritage.
106. Why did the government want Native Americans to own land and farm for a living?
A. It thought this would make Native Americans more like other Americans.
B. It wanted to see if individual Native Americans would drop out of school.
C. It wanted to see whether matters could become worse on the reservation.
D. It thought all the land and farm should belong to Native Americans.

A. most people who owned land and farmed it were Native Americans
B. Native Americans were used to living on separate farms

A. the good land that was given to Native Americans
B. the government's effort to help that didn't work out
C. helping Native Americans on their reservations
D. breaking away from old customs of Native Americans

A team of British scientists is preparing to create a digital model of Mount Rushmore using laser scanning (激光扫描) so that the iconic(图标的) U.S. monument(历史遗迹) can be recreated if it is damaged.
The survey work is part of a project to record the exact size of 500 of the most famous world heritage sites, including the Acropolis in Athens and the Great Wall of China.
The joint team, from the Glasgow School of Art and Historic Scotland, are now surveying 10 world heritage sites in Britain before they aim their laser beams at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. There they will team up with members of the CyArk Foundation, an organization that has identified several “at risk” world heritage sites. Mount Rushmore is on their list.
Laser scanning itself is not new but applying the technology to historic sites or buildings is a new way. Chris McGregor of Historic Scotland told Reuters Television. “They hadn't really thought about the built heritage as being a market for such a machine but its use and the work that we are doing with it is really innovative(创新的) and really exciting.”
CyArk's goal is to create a huge database of detailed surveys of sites so that they can be maintained or even rebuilt if they are damaged by a natural disaster, climate change or even war.
Doug Pritchard from the Glasgow School of Art's Digital Design Studio said, “We are discovering new things about the buildings which are hundreds, thousands of years old.”
CyArk said the loss of architectural and archaeological(考古学的) cultural heritage is becoming a crisis of global proportions with an urgent need for reliable documentation as a key step to help protect heritage sites. The development of laser scanning technology has given a greater accuracy to surveys and thrown new light on ancient monuments.

American author Mark Twain once noted that “life would be surely happier if we could only be born at the age of 80 and gradually approach 18.” Twain's words were only one of many complaints about aging. The ancient Greek poet Homer called old age “hateful”, and William Shakespeare termed it “terrible winter”.
Alexander the Great, who conquered most of the known world before he died around 323 B.C., may have been looking for a river that healed the ravages of age. During the 12th century A.D., a king called Prester John ruled a land that had a river of gold and a fountain of youth.
But the name linked most closely to the search for a fountain of youth is 16th-century Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon. He thought it would be found in Florida. In St. Augustine, the oldest city in the U.S., there's a tourist attraction. It is said to be the fountain of youth that Ponce de Leon discovered soon after he arrived in what is now Florida in 1513. However, elderly visitors who drink the spring's water don't turn into teenagers.
But the tale of the search for a fountain of youth is so appealing(有吸引力的) that it survives anyway, says Ryan K. Smith, a professor of history. “People are more attracted by the story of looking and not finding than they are by the idea that the fountain might be out there somewhere.”
Still, a few grains of truth have helped to support the story. Kathleen Deagan, a professor of archaeology, says a graveyard and the remains of a Spanish mission dating back to St. Augustine's founding in 1565 have been discovered near the so-called fountain of youth. Michelle Reyna, a spokesperson for the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park in St. Augustine, says the fountain has been a tourist attraction since at least 1901 and may have been attracting visitors since 1860.
119. According to the passage, who searched for a fountain of youth?
A. Ponce de Leon. B. William Shakespeare.
C. Kathleen Deagan. D. Michelle Reyna.
120. What does the underlined word “ravages” in the second paragraph probably mean?
A. Growth. B. Limits. C. Damages. D. Benefits.
121. What is the attitude of people towards the fountain of youth?
A. People find much pleasure in looking for it.
B. People believe the existence of it somewhere.
C. People have no interest in searching for it.
D. People consider the idea of the fountain of youth absurd(荒谬的).
122. The passage mainly tells us ?.
A. how the fountain of youth came into being
B. why some famous people hate becoming old
C. how to remain young forever
D. whether the fountain of youth exists
123. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The underlined words “the story” refers to Alexander the Great ruling a land that had a river of gold and a fountain of youth.
B. Augustine, which is the oldest city in the U.S, lies in Florida.
C. Some elderly visitors find themselves younger after drinking the water from the fountain of youth.

What Makes a Good School?
I'm a parent of two elementary students. The experience that my children are going through now in the elementary school is so different from mine when I was at their age. What I think of a good school is communication between teachers, students and parents. 124. ? Parent-teacher communication guarantees that a child is educated in the same way and in turn a child will build special bonds in communication between their teachers and parents.
125. ? My children return home telling me that their teachers ignore their questions when they raise their hands and don't talk much. On the other hand, I feel the same when I write notes to school. 126. ? This is telling me there is a lack in communication from the school teachers nowadays as their life is so overwhelmed by the over-crowded schools we have in the US.
However, choosing a career in education is not just for a good job. A teacher should really have heart in touching every child's life. 127. ? Even now, I still remember all my elementary school teachers' names. 128. ? The answer lies in the fact that they spent every minute of their precious time helping me and answering all my questions with patience. When you have teachers who are willing to spend time for any child and communicate with parents, it is what I consider a GREAT school for a child to attend, not just GOOD.
A. I don't get any response from the teachers to my questions, not even a one-word response.
B. There are different ways of communication, according to different cultures.
C. Why is that?
D. Strong communication is very important to a child's education.
E. I feel that schools nowadays don't communicate with parents enough and neither is involvement.
F. My elementary school teachers all touched my life.
G. What do you think of it?
