Step 1 Free talk

Step 2 Revision of Units 5 & 6
1. Understand the signs
T: Here is a photo of a park. Is it beautiful?
S: Yes, it is.
T: Look, there are some signs too. Look at this. What does it mean?
S: It means “No smoking”. It means you can’t smoke here.
T: Good, can you ask and answer in pairs?

S1: What does it mean?
S2: It means “No parking”. It means you can’t park your car here.

2. Ask and answer
T: This park is beautiful. Is Suzhou beautiful?
S: Yes, it is.
T: Look at these photos. How beautiful SIP (苏州工业园区) is! But sometimes it is not so beautiful. What makes our city dirty?

T: What can/should we do to keep our city clean?

T: Can you put the rubbish in the right bin? (用PPT展示四类垃圾桶,并指向其中的recycle标志) This means we can reuse or recycle the waste. Reuse means use again. Recycle means change things into something else.

Step 3 Choose and say
T: Now let’s look at these pictures. Which one do you want to choose in each group? First discuss with your partner, and tell your partner why you choose it.
S: (与同桌讨论)
T: Let’s look at the first two pictures. (用PPT呈现一组照片) Which one do you want to choose?
S: I would like to choose picture B.
T: Why?
S: Because in picture A, the girl keeps water running when she is brushing her teeth. In picture B, the boy turns off the tap when he is using the soap.
T: Good, so we … (用PPT呈现句子We shouldn’t waste water. We should save water.)
S: (朗读句子)
T: Great! What about the next two pictures? (用PPT呈现一组照片) If your home is near your school, do you go to school on foot or by car?
S: My home is near my school, and I go to school on foot. So I choose picture A.
T: Why?
S: Because we need energy to start the car. If I go to school on foot, I can save energy.
T: I’m so glad to hear that. We should … (用PPT呈现句子We should save energy. We shouldn’t drive so much because cars use a lot of energy.)

T: Great! I think you have already taken action to protect the Earth.

Step 4 Find and stick
T: There is not much water in many places. There is not much coal or oil on the Earth. People cut down too many trees. They use too many plastic bags and bottles. The Earth is sad. How can we make her beautiful and happy again?
S: We should save water, save energy, save trees and we shouldn’t use too much plastic.
T: Yes, and we should reuse and recycle things. Now look at these two pictures. (用PPT呈现两张图片). In picture 1, the boy uses the paper bags to make a toy. He is reusing paper and the napkin box. In picture 2, the paper can be recycled to make recycled paper (再生纸). I asked you to find this kind of photos on the Internet. Did you find any photos like this?
S: Yes, we do.
T: Good! Please stick them on Page 101.

Step 5 Brainstorming
T: Now, let’s think about what we can reuse. First you can write on your paper, and then you can discuss with you partner.
S: (学生快速在纸上写下能循环使用的物品名称,写好后快速与同桌交流)
T: Now tell me what we can reuse.
S: We can reuse water/old clothes/paper/plastic bottles or glass bottles.
T: What else?
S: We can reuse Coke cans, newspapers and many other things.
T: Look at the following pictures. Some people think they are rubbish, but some people think they are treasure. Do you know why?
S: Because people can recycle them.
T: Yes. These things can be recycled. What else can we recycle? Do you know? Please discuss in groups.

T: I’m so glad that you know so much. After class, you can surf the Internet to learn what we can change these things into, and what you are going to do with these things. I hope you can share your ideas next time. If you say in English, you can say in Chinese with pictures.

本课时一开始教师通过与学生的自由交谈很快地导入环保主题,紧接着复习第5单元的标识和第6单元如何使我们的城市保持洁净。这都与本课的主题息息相关。在此过程中,学生们重温了知识,对垃圾分类新知识有了一些认识。
随后,教师展示四组图片让学生讨论他们认为哪一幅图是正确的,学生在表达过程中需要灵活运用他们已有的语言知识来阐明理由。教师从学生的回答提炼小结地球的现状,让学生了解重复和循环使用的重要性,并通过头脑风暴的方式,让学生说说生活中可以重复和循环使用的物品,特别提倡学生能多上网查找相关资料,了解如何来重复和循环使用资源,提升环保意识,也为第二课时的教学做好充分的铺垫。

Step 2 Brainstorming
T: In our last class, we talked about what we can/should do to protect our Earth. And we know we should not only save things, but also try to reuse and recycle things. Look, many things can be reused, but can you tell me how to reuse them? (用PPT呈现再利用生活用水的图片) For example, I’m going to use water to wash rice. Next I’m going to use the water to wash vegetables. Then I’m going to use the water to mop the floor. At last, I’m going to use the water to flush the toilet. (提醒学生be going to句型后面用动词原形) Can you tell me your ideas?

Step 3 Let’s talk
T: What are you going to do to reuse old clothes? (鼓励学生说出自己的想法,如果没有同学发言时可以把PPT中提供的图片给学生看,激发他们的灵感)
S: I’m going to use old clothes to make a dress, a bag, a pillow and the cover of my notebook. (学生也有可能谈到自己穿不下的比较新、比较干净的衣服可以给自己的表弟、表妹穿,或者捐给贫困地区的儿童穿,教师可以表扬这是最好的再利用旧衣服的途径)
T: Wow, they look beautiful. What are you going to do to reuse Coke cans?
S: I’m going to use Coke cans to make a boat, a robot and some toy chairs. I’m going to use Coke cans to grow plants.
T: Good idea. Look, we can also use plastic bottles or glass bottles to grow plants.
T: What are you going to do to reuse wood?
S: I’m going to use disposable chopsticks to build a house, make a photo frame and a clothes basket.
T: Great! What are you going to do to reuse CDs?
S: I’m going to use them to draw pictures, make a bicycle and some clocks.
T: You have very good ideas. In fact we can reuse many things. Look, I’m going to use milk boxes and shoe boxes to make storage boxes. I can put books, toys and other things in them. I’m going to use them to make some special clothes because we are going to have a cosplay show. And we can also reuse paper. Do you often use both sides of paper?
S: Yes.
T: It’s a good way to reuse paper. And look, boys like to use paper to make paper planes. This girl uses newspapers to make beautiful clothes to take part in a fashion show. Sometimes rubbish can be very useful. (可用PPT与呈现图片,引导学生谈论如何循环利用物品)

Step 4 Let’s make
T: You know that we can save a lot of resources if we reuse and recycle things. Should we throw away all the rubbish?
S: No, we shouldn’t.
T: We shouldn’t throw away useful rubbish. To let more people know this and ask them to join us, let’s make a poster to tell them not to throw useful rubbish away and try their best to reuse and recycle them.
S: OK.

Step 5 Show time
T: Now which group would like to show your poster and tell what you are going to do?
S: (两只三组学生上台展示)
T: Thank you very much. You all did a great job. We have only one Earth. Protect the Earth, protect our home. Protect the environment, protect ourselves. I think the Earth will be a better place to live in.

说课
设计本课时的Free talk时,教师从教材中提到的地球日和世界环境日谈及学生是否知道一些其他的有关环境保护的日子,一方面检测了学生学习第7单元Protect the Earth后是否关注环保问题,是否能养成上网主动搜索资料的习惯,同时拓展了他们的视野,从而体会到保护地球的重要性和紧迫性。
紧接着第一课时的话题,我们不仅要节约资源,更要懂得资源的再利用和循环使用,让学生打开思维说说生活中怎样进行资源的再利用。在学生阐述之前,教师用例子先做示范,引导学生大胆流畅地表达。等学生说了一些想法不能再说时,教师再出示图片让学生了解很多人眼中的废物可以是宝贝,激发学生上网搜索更多可以变废为宝的物品。
最后,组织学生动手制作环保海报并做综合陈述,号召更多的人参与到保护地球的行列,明白我们只有一个地球,保护地球就是保护我们的家园,保护环境就是保护我们自己。
家庭作业中要求学生在班级或小区做调查,了解资源的再利用和循环使用情况,并给当地政府部门写信呼吁更多的人们重视资源的再利用和循环使用,既锻炼学生的交往能力、表达能力,又能进一步树立学生的主人翁意识。
