If you live in a city, every commute could be a “'best-of”reel of dangerous driving, Car doors, in particular, have become an excellent teaching aid in proving Newton’s law that objects can occupy the same space simultaneously. Bikers, often sandwiched in a bike lane between parked cars and flowing traffic, are so likely to be struck by errant (错误的)car doors that the phenomenon now has a name: dooring. Sadly, it’s more common than you’d think.
A 2011 report found that there was roughly one dooring accident in Chicago every day of the year, accounting for about one in five of all reported bike crashes. New York City recently announced a safety plan including a new video advertisement and “LOOK! For Cyclists” sticker on all city cabs. This is a nice start for a city that serves about 336,000 cab passengers every day. Still, a sticker does not make a complete behavioral change, and there are more than 250,000 daily Uber and Lyft passengers in the city who will miss this message altogether. What, then, is the next step to ensure peace between bikers and drivers? The excellent urban design blog 99% Invisible reports a simple, almost effortless motion you can take as a driver or passenger of a motor vehicle concerned about cyclist safety: Just open your door with your right hand.
This tip comes from the Netherlands, which is why it’s known here as the “Dutch Reach”. If you are sitting on the driver’s side of a parked car and want to get out, don’t open the door with your door-side (left) hand as you’re intuitively prepared to—instead, open the door with your right hand. This simple motion causes you to PIVOT(转移)your entire upper body as you reach, first drawing your line of sight past your rear-view mirror, and then out to the street behind you. If you are on the passenger’s side, use your left hand instead of your right.
It’s just that simple—and it works. So effective is the Dutch Reach that it doesn’t even have a name in the bike-friendly Netherlands. For decades, that’s just how drivers have been taught to open a door.
Like any habit, the Dutch Reach will take a while to internalize. Dutch Reach.org, a safety advocacy movement trying to make the reach mainstream, has plenty of resources for spreading the word, and a few slogans that could help you remember. Our favorite: uReach, Swivel(转动) , Look, Open.” Of course, if it’s easier to remember, you could always just tell yourself to “Go Dutch”.
58.According to the passage, dooring happens when_________.
A. a car door is broken B. a biker eats while cycling
C. a biker is knocked by a car door D. a car door is hit by a moving vehicle
59.According to the Dutch Reach, when opening a car door we should use _____ .
A. the left hand B. the right hand
C. the hand closer to the door D. the hand further from the door
60. What does the underlined part in the last paragraph mean?
A. You could pay your own bill.
B. You could learn the Dutch Reach.
C. You could visit Holland by yourself.
D. You could share the slogans with others.

A remote volcano in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands has erupted 10 times in less than a month. Experts say more eruptions are possible.
Bogoslof volcano has sent up ash clouds that have reached as high as 35,000 feet.
The Alaska Volcano Observatory is a joint program of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the University of Alaska Fairbanks. It says 90 volcanoes have been active within the last 10,000 years. And they could erupt again. More than 50 have been active since about 1760. That is when record-keeping began.
Like Bogoslof, most are on the l,550-mile-long Aleutian Arc. The area forms the northern part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” The ring is a horseshoe-shaped zone around the Pacific Ocean of frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. These are caused by the subduction(潜没) of an oceanic plate beneath continental plates.
Volcanoes in Alaska erupt regularly. Pavlof Volcano sent up ash clouds in 2013. Cleveland volcano blew in December 2011. Redoubt volcano 100 miles southwest of Anchorage blew in March 2009, dropping ash during the medals ceremony for the U.S. alpine ski championships at Alyeska Resort in Girdwood. Some volcanoes erupt and spit out additional ash occasionally for weeks, as Bogoslof seems to be doing.
Alaska Volcano Observatory was formed in response to the 1986 eruption of Mount Augustine. The observatory has tools to predict eruptions. As magma(岩浆)moves beneath a volcano before an eruption, it often generates earthquakes. They swell the surface of a mountain and increase the gases given off. The observatory samples the gases. It also measures earthquake activity and watches for landscape deformities.
The observatory uses mathematical models to forecast how fast ash particulates (颗粒) will be transported in the atmosphere. And to determine where ash could fall, the observatory runs the models when it detects that a volcano might erupt. It also updates them when they blow.
What makes Alaskan volcanoes so dangerous? Volcanoes in Hawaii ooze(渗出)lava. But volcanoes in Alaska tend to explode. Instead of a red river of lava, Alaskan volcanoes typically shoot ash up to 50,000 feet. That is more than nine miles. It reaches the jet stream. That ash is not the kind you left after a campfire. Instead, it’s an abrasive (粗糙的)kind of rock fragment(碎片). The particulate has jagged(锯齿状的)edges. It has been used as an industrial abrasive to polish metals. Particulate can injure skin, eyes and breathing passages. The young, the elderly and people with respiratory(呼吸的)problems are especially sensitive. Ash under a windshield wiper can scratch glass. However, most volcanoes are far from communities. So ash fall that requires breathing masks or new air filters on a car is infrequent.
USGS geophysicist John Power once compared, flying through an ash cloud to flying into a sandblaster. Ash can scrape the moving parts of jet engines such as turbine blades. However, ash on hot parts of a jet engine is potentially more dangerous, according to the observatory. The engines operate near the melting temperature of volcanic ash. “Ingestion(摄入)ash can block fuel taps, and turbine parts causing flame out, immediate loss of engine thrust, and engine failure,” according to the observatory.
Airlines get excited when an ash cloud rises above 20,000 feet.
The jet stream can carry ash for hundreds of miles. Ash from Kasatochi Volcano in August 2008 blew all the way to Montana. Redoubt volcano blew on Dec,15, 1989. It sent ash 150 miles away into the path of a KLM jet carrying 231 passengers. Its four engines flamed out. As the crew tried to restart the engines,“smoke” and a strong smell of sulfur(硫)filled the cabin. The jet dropped more than 2 miles, from 27,900 feet to 13,300 feet. The crew finally was able to restart all engines. The plane landed safely at Anchorage.
So what are the chances for a major, catastrophic eruption? “That’s always a possibility but big eruptions have signals,” said USGS research geophysicist Chris Waythomas. “That doesn’t happen in 20 minutes.” Months of below-ground unrest can forecast a major eruption. ‘‘It has to break a lot of rock to get to the surface.” he said.
61. What can we learn about Alaskan volcanoes?
A. The movement of continental plates leads to the eruption of Alaskan volcanoes.
B. People began to take notes of the eruption of Alaskan volcanoes in about 1760.
C. They are situated off the northern part of the Pacific Ocean.
D. They erupted most frequently in around 1760.
62. The danger of Alaskan volcanoes primarily lies in________ .
A. flying engines being affected by the ash shot high into the air
B. forest fires after their eruption
C. health problems caused by ash particulates
D. glass windows broken by ash fall
63. What’s the fun_ction of the last but one paragraph?
A. To prove the damaging effect of ash.
B. To praise collective efforts and wisdom.
C. To convince people of the reliability of KLM jets.
D. To persuade airlines to avoid routes above Alaskan volcanoes.
64. What does Waythomas think of a disastrous eruption of a volcano?
A. There is much possibility of its eruption.
B. It always happens all of a sudden.
C. It can be predicted ahead of time.
D. There are seldom signals before the eruption.

Shoppers will spend record sums online in the next few weeks—in China for Singles Day on November 11th, in America on Black Friday and around the world in the run-up to Christmas. E-commerce(电子商务) has been growing by 20% a year for a decade, shaking up industries from logistics(物流业)to consumer goods. Nowhere does debate take place more fiercely about what this means than in America, where thousands of stores have shut this year and where retailing (零售业)accounts for one in nine jobs. Astonishingly, online shopping has only just got started. Last year it amounted to a mere 8.5% of the world’s retail spending. In America the share was about 10%. Its effects on business and society will be huge. Not just because retailing is a big employer that touches many industries, but also because its two greatest advocates Jack Ma and Jeff Bezos, the founders of Alibaba and Amazon, have used it to amass a new sort of conglomerate (集团). The question is whether its creation will promote competition or demand restraint(抑制). In the past two decades Alibaba and Amazon have added ever more services, from cloud computing to video. The firms’ businesses will strengthen each other as consumers and companies become more likely to use their platforms, and diverse sources of revenue and data power further growth. As a result, the two giants(巨头) sit at the centre of all sorts of activity. In America Amazon is showing, week by week, the chaos that an innovative e-commerce firm can cause in a giant, mature market. In China Alibaba is showing how dramatically one company can reshape business in a fast-growing economy. They will not conquer every industry they touch but, as they expand, few firms will change as many sectors in as many places. Through one lens, this is a boon for competition. The e-commerce sites of Amazon and Alibaba lower barriers to entry by providing a simpler, cheaper way for small manufacturers to distribute goods and find potential buyers. Local manufacturers are challenging multinational giants. Consumers benefit, as they can choose from more and better products than ever. Yet as the giant e-commerce platforms grow, so does unease about their might. With access to cheap capital, Amazon can make big investments, including in warehouses, artificial intelligence and other firms such as Whole Foods, a grocer it bought for $13.7bn this year. Those investments, combined with the vast amounts of data on the consumers and businesses on its platform, mean that competitors struggle to keep up. Amazon’s challengers should learn from China, where Alibaba’s rivals are teaming up. Tencent began as a gaming and messaging company. It now has a successful digital-payments business and is the biggest shareholder in JD.com, Alibaba’s closest e-commerce competitor. JD is working with other retailers and tech firms, too. In August it announced that shoppers could buy through Baidu, China’s leading search engine. Amazon’s would-be competitors might follow a similar path, by establishing partnerships. Walmart (another investor in JD), for example, seems to be adopting JD’s strategies, making its products available through Google’s voice assistant to counter Amazon’s Alexa. Facebook wants to make it easier for customers to buy goods featured in its ads. And Google, to the horror of some privacy advocates, is tracking consumers to help bricks-and-mortar shops see which online ads work. American firms may yet catch up with their Chinese counterparts. Will that be enough to guarantee competition? Regulators must keep watch. More mergers(兼并) are now likely among both makers of consumer goods and retailers, as they struggle to battle Amazon. Deals between retailers and tech firms will complicate matters further.65. The author’s aim in predicting the public’s spending in the coming festivals is to ______.
A. show the fast development of e-commerce
B. advise people to spend money wisely on festival presents
C. convey the message that people’s living standard is improving
D. show the fact that more and more people celebrate festivals by shopping
66. What does the underlined word “it” in Line 5 of Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Retail spending. B. Retailing. C. Online shopping. D. Capital.
67. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The commercial operation pattern of Alibaba and Amazon.
B. The challenges Alibaba and Amazon will be faced with.
C. The benefits Alibaba and Amazon have brought.
D. The destructive power of Alibaba and Amazon.
What can we infer about the future market?
More and more retailers will cooperate with tech firms.
B. Physical stores will disappear gradually.
Tencent is likely to specialize in retailing.
D. Amazon will have no competitors.
69.What might the author continue to talk about?
A. Watching the giants. B. Reshaping business.
C. Strengthening competitive power. D. Restricting online shopping.

第四部分:任务型阅读(共9小题;71—78题每小题1分,79题2分)

Waste-to-energy
Nowadays many regions are facing short-term energy shortages until alternative sources of power are introduced. Australia is a good example of a country that is facing such a crisis. At the same time, it also has a growing plastic waste problem, and addressing this could present an important solution to its energy crisis.
With thousands of tons of plastics in Australia’s coastal waters, it’s ironic that one problem could actually help solve the other. That is, the “dirty plastics” which rarely get recycled could be transformed into fuel for everyday energy needs. Waste-to-energy isn’t a new concept. Successfully operated globally, it helps effectively remove plastic pollution. It can also simply help to fill the increased energy demand of a growing population, and can even be made into
road-ready fuel by smart technology.
However, there are critics of waste-to-energy. Some of them are afraid that burning would let off smoke and dangerous substances though technology has evolved significantly. Other critics say that all waste should be recycled, and that fuel generation (产生)isn’t recycling because the waste material no longer exist.
While we must always work towards building a better world with less of an environmental impact, we must accept the fact that our population is growing, and with that comes more consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, reducing the weight of goods by using plastic in production is a popular strategy to reduce the carbon output of sectors like transport.
The goal today should be to reduce the negative environmental impacts of the activities already being undertaken. While creating less waste and having full material circularity are important long-term objectives, we should be making use of the immediate and long-term benefits of waste-to-energy. We should understand properly what new technologies can do, rather than assume immediately that they are “bad”.
Today’s waste-to-energy plants are clean; they show that controls can be put in place to appropriately manage emissions and by-products, and the liquification (液化)technologies use no oxygen and include no burning to begin with. The output can be a low-sulphur(低硫)fuel, which is often better for reducing air pollution.
While not as clean as renewable energy, waste is a renewable resource. Waste resources should always be sent for recycling and higher value-added options. Waste-to-energy is a necessary option for those materials that rarely (or never) make it to recycling. Neither recycling nor waste-to-energy represents a cure-all for huge amounts of plastic waste that exists today. Given our need for energy and fuel, waste-to-energy should be on the table for discussion with a view to quick adoption.

第五部分:书面表达(满分25分)
请认真阅读下面文字及表格,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。
Various clinical reports have consistently pointed to drug abuse among the young. It is no longer a problem for individual families, but for society as a whole.
Young people are drawn to drugs because they want to satisfy their curiosity. They misunderstand that drugs can help them to escape from unhappiness and address their problems. In reality, it is just a kind of escape from reality. Some adolescent abusers take drugs because of peer pressure. They want to fit in with their friends who are drug users and win their acceptance.
Many people have realized the gravity of the problem and some measures have been taken. Parents begin to attach importance to communication with their children. Teachers often chat with children who may have emotional problems, which enables them to express their own feelings. The government is making efforts to help the young drug abusers get back on the right track.

Young people become drug abusers for various reasons. Fortunately, many people have realized the gravity of the problem and joint efforts have been made. The ratio of teenage addicts declines in China.
Young drug abuse brings about severe consequences to the abusers as well as society. To begin with, drugs do great harm to teenagers’ health. After taking drugs, abusers may lose control and hurt themselves without realizing what they are doing. On top of that, young drug abuse contributes to the happening of crimes, thus posing a great threat to social security and stability. Putting an end to this vice is a must.
In a bid to protect us students from drugs, we can’t be too cautious to make friends and stay away from those who always behave badly. What’s more, it’s vital to lead a healthy lifestyle and hold positive attitudes towards life.
