第二部分 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
A
My husband is read (?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)ing The Secret Garden aloud to our kids. They are at the part where Mary has told Colin that she’s found the garden her mother loved. It’s an exciting moment. But the passage I’m waiting for is a few chapters on, after Colin has tasted his first breaths of fresh air and Mary has grown strong running in the garden. It’s just a detail, but my kids will notice it: a delicious description of roasted potatoes and eggs.
We have a tradition (?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?) of trying foods from the books we read aloud. It started when we read Elizabeth Enright’s The Saturdays, and one of the boys asked, “What are petit fours?” An answer, my husband and I felt, wouldn’t be as good as a sample. So one Saturday we all sat down having tea and little cakes, covered with pink, green, and yellow. It was exciting for the kids to try a dessert they had learned about in a book. The petit fours they tried didn’t tell them what it was like to live in New York City 60 years ago, but tasting them made the book’s words alive.
Later, when we (?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)read C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, we had Turkish delight. We read The Penderwicks, written by Jeanne Birdsall, and had gingerbread (姜饼). We read Paddington Bear and tried marmalade.
Soon we will reach (?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)the part of The Secret Garden where Mary, Colin, and Dickon roast potatoes and eggs in a small oven (炉) in the earth. My kids will go out into the woods to find the perfect place for an oven of our own. Yes, we’ve eaten potatoes and eggs, but never in the open air.
The world that a good (?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?) book creates is whole and real, but it lies flat on the page until a reader gives life to it.

Britain’s pub landlord (?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)s (酒吧店主) are looking with a worried eye to the UK Chancellor’s budget for fear that the annual tax gathering round will strike another blow to a traditional industry already reeling (蹒跚). Thousands of pubs have closed since the financial crash in 2007.
The Plough, wh (?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)ich was once a coaching house for travelers, has been serving Britain’s famous warm beer since the days of Shakespeare. Now it is under threat too. “Yeah. So many pubs have been closed over the last few years even in this area,” said Derek O’Neil, the manager of The Plough Pub.
Many reasons are (?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?) the cause—a ban on smoking in public, severe laws against drinking and driving and high taxes have all combined to kill off nearly 10,000 pubs in the last seven years, according to the British Beer and Pub Association. With the closures, pubs are being redeveloped. Many have turned into supermarkets, where the beer is sometimes cheaper.
Britain’s pubs contin (?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)ue to play an important part in the UK economy, selling thousands of different beers and employing more than a million people. The reality, though, is pubs are suffering something of a hangover (遗留物). In the last 15 years the amount of beer sold in pubs has fallen by eight million barrels to just under 36 million a year. Pub landlords want tax breaks (税务减免).
“People have less m (?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)oney in their pockets, so they can’t go out and spend it and habits are changing—so much alcohol is nowadays drunk at home,” said Brigid Simmonds, Chief Executive of the British Beer and Pub Association. “Yeah, I miss the pubs where there’s a lot of character, especially 30 years ago. You know there was great fun in them.”
While pubs are st (?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)ill much loved, they’re discovering that love isn’t enough to survive 21st century economics.
51. According to the first paragraph, tax gathering round can .
A. greatly benefit Britain’s pubs
B. save Britain’s pubs in a way

A. It has been closed. B. It is run quite well now.
C. It is a pub with a long history.

53. Why are some pubs being redeveloped?
A. Because they want to sell cheaper bear.
B. Because their business is becoming better.
C. Because they want to receive more travelers.
D. Because they can’t continue in the present situation.
54. What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?
A. Pubs can’t offer many jobs to people.
B. The UK economy actually depends on pubs.
C. Pubs become less important in the UK economy.
D. The closures of pubs will damage the UK economy.
55. What is the text mainly about?

D. The effect of tax gathering round on British pubs.

How much informa (?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)tion can people learn about you by seeing what you look for on the Internet? Too much, say some people with the Internet service from America Online. These people should know. AOL put the Internet search records of more than six hundred and fifty thousand people in a public area on part of its website.
The records include (?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)d every search these users made between March and May of this year. The company said the release was an accident. It said the records were meant for researchers. The purpose was to help them study how people use the Internet so search tools can be improved.
To protect privac (?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)y, AOL used numbers instead of names to identify the users. But people who saw the records quickly recognized that some users could be identified through the details of their searches.
The New York Times (?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?) decided to prove it. The newspaper was able to identify one of the users as Thelma Arnold of Georgia. The sixty-two-year-old woman was surprised to get a telephone call from the reporter who found her. But she agreed to a story about her searches. Many of them, for example, involved medical conditions. Someone might think she is very sick. In fact, in many cases, Thelma Arnold was searching for information to help friends.
Still, the records (?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)from AOL show that Internet searches can tell a lot about what people are thinking. That includes things they might never want others to know. The records could be highly useful to marketers. But some researchers say they will not use them because the information is too personal.
People becam (?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)e angry when they learned that . AOL took the information off its website. The company apologized and called the release a big mistake. Some people, however, had already copied the data before AOL removed it.
56. What is the best title of the text? (no more than 10 words)
57. Please f (?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)ill in the blank in the last paragraph with proper words. (no more than 8 words)
58. What do you (?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)think of this incident caused by the AOL? (no more than 30 words)
59. Why does (?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)Thelma Arnold make so many searches about medical conditions according to the text? (no more than 5 words)
60. What does the unde (?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)rlined word “them” (Line 3, Paragraph 2) probably refer to? (no more than 3 words)
