I like this job, in which I stay with small children and from which I get the challenges and awards. I also think my work is important. There was a time when I thought I would never have that sort of career.
I wasn’t an excellent student because I didn’t do much schoolwork. In my final term I started thinking what I might do and found I didn’t have much to offer. I just accepted that I wasn’t the type to have a career.
I then found myself a job. Looking after two little girls. It wasn’t too bad at first. But the problems began when I agreed to live in, so that I would be there if my boss had to go out for business in the evening. We agreed that if I had to work extra hours one week, she’d give me time off the next week. But unfortunately, it didn’t often work out. I was getting extremely tired and fed up, because I had too many late nights and early mornings with these children.
One Sunday, I was in the park with the children, and met Megan who used to go to school with me, I told her about my situation. She suggested that I should attend a course and get a qualification if I wanted to work with children. I didn’t think I would be accepted because I didn’t take many exams in school. She persuaded me to phone the local college and they were really helpful. My experience counted for a lot and I got on a part-time course. I had to leave my job with the family, and got work helping out at a kindergarten.
Now I’ve got a full-time job there. I shall always be thankful to Megan, my schoolmate. I wish I had known earlier that I could have a career, even if I am not top of the class at school. (330 words)

A. got much help from her boss B. was paid for nothing at all
C. often worked long hours D. took a day off every other week

A. She needed a rest after working. B. She attended a part-time course.

A. One must choose the job she likes. B. Hard work makes an excellent student.
C. Less successful students can still have a career. D. Qualifications are necessary for a career.

Think about the different ways that people use the wind. You can use it to fly a kite or to sail a boat. Wind is one of the cleanest and richest power sources (来源). Evidence shows that windmills (风车) began to be used in ancient Iran (伊朗) dating back in the seventh century BC. Windmills were first introduced to Europe during the 1100s, when armies returned from the Middle East with knowledge of using wind power.
For many centuries, people used windmills to grind (磨碎) wheat into flour or pump water from deep underground wells when electricity was discovered in the late 1800s. People living in remote areas began to use them to produce electricity. This allowed them to have electric lights and radios. However, by the 1940s when electricity was available to people in almost all areas of the United States, windmills were seldom used again.
During the 1970s, people started becoming concerned about the pollution that was created when coal and gas were burned to produce electricity. People also realized that the supply of coal and gas would not last forever. Then, wind was rediscovered, though it meant higher costs.
Today, there is a global movement to supply more and more of our electricity through the use of wind. (215 words)
24. From the text we know that windmills ________.
A. were invented by European armies B. have a history of more than 5000 years
C. used to supply power to radio in remote areas D. have been used since America was discovered
25. What was a new use for wind power in the late l9th century?
A. Sailing a boat in the sea. B. Producing electricity everywhere.
C. Grinding wheat into flour. D. Pumping water from the wells.
26. One of the reasons wind was rediscovered in the 1970s is that ________.
A. wind power is much cleaner B. it is one of the dirtiest power sources
C. it was cheaper to create energy from wind D. the supply of coal and gas failed to meet needs
27. What would the writer probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?
A. The advantages of wind power. B. The design of wind power plants.
C. The worldwide movement to save energy. D. The global trend towards producing power from wind.

What will people die of 100 years from now? If you think that is a simple question, you have not been paying attention to the revolution that is taking place in biotechnology (生物技术). With the help of new medicine, the human body will last a very long time. Death will come mainly from accidents, murder and war. Today’s leading killers, such as heart disease, cancer, and aging itself, will become distant memories.
In discussion of technological (技术的) changes, the Internet gets most of the attention these days. But the change in medicine can be the real technological event of our times. How long can humans live? Human brains were known to decide the final death. Cells (细胞) are the basic units of all living things, and until recently, scientists were sure that the life of cells could not go much beyond 120 years because the basic materials of cells, such as those of brain cells, would not last forever. But the upper limits will be broken by new medicine. Sometime between 2050 and 2100, medicine will have advanced to the point at which every 10 years or so, people will be able to take medicine to repair their organs. The medicine, made up of the basic building materials of life, will build new brain cells, heart cells, and so on, in much the same way our bodies make new skin cells to take the place of old ones.
It is exciting to imagine that the advance in technology may be changing the most basic condition of human existence (生存), but many technical problems still must be cleared up on the way to this wonderful future. (280 words)
28. According to the passage, human death is now mainly caused by ________.
A. diseases and aging B. wars and accidents C. accidents and disasters D. heart disease and pollution
29. In the writer’s opinion, today’s most important advance in technology lies in ________.
A. medicine B. the Internet C. brain cells D. human organ
30. Humans may live longer in the future because ________.
A. heart disease will be far away from us B. human brains can decide the final death
C. the basic materials of cells will last forever D. human organs can be repaired by new medicine
31. We can learn from the passage that ________.
A. human life will not last more than 120 years in the future
B. humans have to take medicine to build new skin cells now
C. much needs to be done before humans can have a longer life
D. we have already solved the technical problems in building new cells

I hear many parents saying that their teenage children are rebellion (反叛的). I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are all taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out bravely on their own, most of them are trying to grasp at one another’s hands for safety.
They say they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But somehow reason for thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoon (蚕茧) —— into a larger cocoon.
It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly opened up a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn from newspapers and TV what a teenager should have and be. And many of today’s parents have come to affect the popularity of their children. All this adds up to great difficulty for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.
But the difficulty is worth getting over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come —— with the people who respect you for who you are. That’s the only kind of popularity that really counts. (314 words)
32. The writer’s purpose in writing this passage is to tell_______.
A. readers how to be popular in the word among the young
B. teenagers how to learn to make decisions for themselves
C. parents how to control and guide their silly children
D. people how to understand and respect each other
33. According to the writer, many teenagers think they are brave enough to act on their own, but, in fact, most of them ______.
A. have difficulty in understanding others B. are not sure of themselves sometimes
C. dare not leave home as they like D. are very much afraid of getting lost
34. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. Teenagers may have thoughts that they don’t want to share with others.
B. Many parents keep their children from finding their own paths.
C. It is not necessary for a teenager to disagree with his or her parents.
D. Parents should not always ask their children to agree with them.
35. During the teenage years, one should learn to _____.
A. be different from others in many ways B. Have a good lifestyle and become popular
C. find one’s real self in one’s life D. do everything against one’s parents

One possible version:
Good morning, everyone!
I’m Jessica from Guangming High School. The topic of my speech is “My Chinese Dream”.
As we all know, the education of remote rural areas is falling behind other areas. And the children there are longing for knowledge. Therefore, the problem about the lack of teachers is especially serious. It puzzles me that parents and friends aren’t in favor of my idea of being a rural teacher. And they think I am foolish. I understand their thoughts and feelings, but I think the children in rural areas are in great need of me. I will study hard to go to college, thus realizing my dream.
I won’t regret my choice. I will struggle for my dream. Come on and join me!
Thank you for listening to me!
