Having spoken to a very nice lady from my local Volunteer Centre, it was agreed that I should try my hand with a local conversation group.
I set out on my motor-car. On the way it rained.
Soaking wet, I arrived at the conversation group’s headquarters and trudged(跋涉) along the pathway to the front door. The fronts of my trousers steamed as the hot sun started to dry away the contents of the cloudburst.
I was greeted by a happy and headed Scottish man in sandals. “let’s take a walk round the land we work on,” he said.
It was obvious that this band of merry men and women, consisting of professionals, volunteers and unemployed people on the New Deal scheme, got up to all manner of things conversational, environmental, ecological, horticultural, and so on.
The land was very vast for a suburban project and everyone seemed in tune with nature and each other. “Sign me up,” I said to the man with the Scottish after our pleasant journey through fields and forests had come to an end.
During my time working as a volunteer with the group I helped give career guidance because I had been trained in this field, digging holes, repairing fences, clearing scrubland (灌木丛), cutting riverbanks, mending dams, planting various things and carrying all sorts of strange looking equipment for those more experienced and qualified members.
I had a great laugh with the trainers and the people on the New Deal scheme and even learned a thing or two about birds, beetles, ladybirds, spiders and butterflies.

As the exciting season comes, you may worry about whether it will take away all the hard work you have done to keep yourself in shape. Then how to deal that problem? Moderation (节制) is the key to enjoy delicious food and still keep weight at the same time. There are some ways for you to follow during festivals.
You can choose to use low-fat ingredients like low-fat milk and low-sugar products to cook desserts and snacks. However, you need to remember to make suitable use of those low-fat or low-sugar products. It is because though this kind of products includes “low-fat”, it doesn’t mean that it is completely “no-fat”. So don’t use it without any moderation.
Though fried food tastes good, it is not good for your health. So you should cook your food by using a limited amount of oil. Most people eat oily food at times on common days. However, you will have more chances to eat oily food during festival. Clearly, you should use less oil when you cook meals on those special days.
Before you have meals during festivals, you had better drink a glass of water. It will help you feel partially full. Then you will eat less during meals. “Talking more” is the other way of eating less. When you have meals with your family and friends, you can pay attention to the talk with them, and then you will forget to eat more much.
Try to record the amount of your everyday calorie intake during festivals. In this way, you can realize how many calories you will put in your body before you eat the delicious food during festivals. Then you can regulate your daily diet later on to keep your body in shape.
What is the most important to keep weight during festivals?
A. Manage the daily diet under moderation. B. Take more exercise than before.
C. Drinking a glass of water after meals. D. Using a limited amount of oil to cook.
Why do people need to pay attention to using low-fat or low-sugar products?
A. Because they can make people eat less during festivals.
B. Because “low-fat” doesn’t means “no-fat”.
C. Because those products can help people lose weight.
D. Because it can be used with any moderation.
The underlined word “regulate” in Paragraph 5 means “________.”
A. Create B. Copy C. Adjust D. Provide
How many ways are mentioned in the passage to manage the daily diet during festivals?
A. 4. B. 5. C. 6. D. 7.

E-cigarettes began as a way to stop people from smoking tobacco. But a new study among teens suggests a scary. effect: E-cigarettes are now appealing to non-smokers, as well. In a survey of over 2 ,000 California high school juniors and seniors, researchers from the University of Southern California discovered that over 40 percent of teen e-cigarette smokers have never smoked traditional cigarettes.
? ?The National Youth Tobacco Survey reports a nearly 9 percent increase in the number of high school students using e-cigarettes from 2013 to 2014,more than enough to stifle (掩盖) the 3. 5 percent decrease in teen cigarette use, as recorded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While 9 percent may not sound like a ton, the amount of middle and high school students using e-cigarettes has actually tripled(增至三倍) .
? ?How, despite decades of anti-smoking advocacy efforts, have e-cigarettes gained such massive popularity in such a short time? Scientists say that the “renormalization” of teen smoking may not be entirely self-inflicted(自己造成的) .A study found that 34 percent of adolescent e-smokers are exposed to electronic cigarettes via a member of their family or friend groups.
? ?Advertising also makes e-cigarettes look cool. E-cigarettes, which are not very expensive, are marketed as a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes, and teens are buying the message. In a recent study in North Carolina, high schoolers easily made a list of the dangers of smoking tobacco, but when asked to do the same with regard to e-cigarettes, the teens were unsure whether the devices could be considered safe. Some weren't even aware that e-cigarettes contain nicotine. But e-cigarettes do contain nicotine. It is highly addictive, which is why some consider e-cigarettes a gateway drug.
? ?If stressing the dangers of tobacco helped make cigarettes uncool, we can do the same to destroy e-cigarettes.
33. From 2013 to 2014,student e-cigarette smokers in high school increased by about?.
A. 3. 5%??? B. 9%? C. 27%??? D. 40%

It’s sometimes hard to understand a teenager. It’s even harder if a teenager doesn’t agree with you. 36
Listen to what the teenager has to say. 37 While you may not entirely agree with what he’s saying, the tension will be lessened if the teenager feels like you are listening and trying to understand him. Also, he might return the favor and give you the chance to talk as well. It’s best to have a conversation where both of your opinions matter rather than fight and possibly hurt each other in the process.
Understand that while the teenager may appear frown up and perhaps even sound matured, his mind has not fully developed, and he cannot think like an adult all the time. 38 However, this doesn’t mean you’re completely right or he deserves to be ridiculed or treated like a child.
39 However, remember that the teenager should understand when “no” is “no”. Avoid bringing up a compromise every time you disagree on something. This might teach him that he can always get away with what he wants, whenever he wants it.
If the conversation launches into an argument, stop it. Tell him that you both need to calm down and think clearly or the problem will never be solved. If he refused to listen to you and continues arguing, step out of the room and allow time for both of you to settle down. Do not scold him or shout back. Your words will possibly be lost on the teenager since you both are too angry to listen to each other. 40
He still needs to learn, and he doesn’t know everything.
Avoid having a bad tone, including accusations in your words.
This article tells you how to disagree with a teenager in a kind manner.
Bring up the topic after a while and make sure you listen to each other patiently.
People like being listened to, so give him the chance to express his opinion.
Come up with a compromise if the situation allows one.
G. Find the good points the teenager has and mention the negative points as well.

Dear Zhang Hua,
I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t do well in your last exam. You are not the only one who seems to try his best but ends up with a failure in exams. Quite a number of students feel the same way as you and they tend to lose their confidence and don’t want to study hard any longer. I’m sure you know that it’s unwise to do so because you might be left far behind.
I was once in the same situation as yours. Failure is the mother of success. In face of failure, what we need to do is to calm down and reflect our learning methods and make some possible changes or to ask the teachers for advice. Anyway, Rome is not built in a day. Only by sticking to studying persistently can we make progress step by step till success. I truly hope I can be of some help to you .
Yours ever,
Li Hua

Text 10
M: The blues developed in the southern Unites States from the music of the blank people who were brought from Africa and forced to work as slaves on southern plantations. The earliest form of the blues were work songs field howlers --that was the musical form of communication among slaves.
The name blues comes from the loneliness and sorrow typically expressed in the song words.
The blues started out with only human voices involved, but over time, musicians began to use musical instruments to perform together with blues singers.
There have been many famous blues singers in modern history. Bessie Smith, who is often referred as “the empress of the blues”, was definitely one of the best among them. Her rich and powerful voice gave her great confidence that she refused to use microphone in live performances. Bessie had made 160 recordings in her short life. She dies at age 43 on September 26th, 1937, after being several hurt in a car accident.
Many critics believe that Bessie Smith’s songs have typified the “earthiness” and “realism”of the blues.
