Smart-phones and personal computers have served as the technological driving force of the past century.
It is the continual (shrinkage) of components that have released the explosion of computing power and enabled these gadgets to be accessible to people across the world. Inspired by this, researchers and scientists have been working on areas where making things small may mean big results.
And this year, the Nobel Prize has challenged the convention of celebrating big by presenting the biggest prizes to discoveries on the smallest scales.
The Nobel Prize in physiology (生理学) or medicine was awarded to a cellular-level experiment. The committee presented the award upon Yoshinori Ohsumi of the Tokyo experiment. The institute of Technology, for his research on autophagy, which is a self-eating process seen in cells.

Another exceptional new field is that of nano-technology(纳米技术). The Nobel Prize in chemistry was awarded to a scientist who managed to build the world's tiniest machines out of molecules. These devices, including a nano-sized car, are so small that they're invisible to the human eye.
MicroscopIc(微观的)as the subjects are, the benefits of the scientists' research are set to be huge. More importantly, their inventions may even eventually be turned into products that benefit mankind.
Ohsumi's research on autophagy shines a light on common diseases such as Parkinson’s and diabetes.
As for the molecular motors, they're geared up to bring huge potential to the fields of medicine and energy.
“The ground-breaking discoveries in physics have lighted a firestorm of research, and it's only a matter of time before their research leads to advances as unimaginable to us now as lasers and computer chips were a hundred years ago.” said Laura H. A woman standing over six feet tall and weighing about 200 pounds is bound to make a
impression. But in Mary Fields case, these features were outmatched by a heart of gold that made her legendary.
Born into slavery in Tennessee in 1832 or I833, Mary had nothing, not even a date of birth. However, in her early years, she found something of truly lasting value-a friend named Dolly. In addition to friendship, Dolly also may have taught Mary to read and write,an invaluable advantage for slaves. At the end of America's Civil War, Mary finally received her freedom and made her own way out into the world.
Mary was employed on a steamboat as a maid when she received word from Dolly, now a nun (修女) in Ohio called Mother Amadeus. Mary arrived in Ohio in 1878 and worked at Amadeus girls' school, managing the kitchen and garden. She became known as a gun-carrying, cigar-smoking woman, but also as an example of kindness and reliability. After a few years, though, Amadeus was sent to another school out West in Montana, becoming the first black woman to settle in central Montana.
When Mary was in her 50s, the sick Mother Amadeus called her West. So, Mary made her way to the small town of Cascade, Montana, to nurse Amadeus to health. She did this and more, running supplies and visitors to St. Peter's Mission where Amadeus lived. Once when her wagon(vehicle carrying heavy loads) overturned, she guarded the delivery from wolves through the night.
But Mary's rough edges caused the local bishop(head of all churches) to prohibit her from working at the mission. Mother Amadeus then set her up as the first African-American female employee of the U.S. Postal Service. Though in her 60s, Mary was such a dependable mail carrier that she earned the name "stagecoach" Mary. She became a beloved figure in Cascade. She was the only woman allowed in the saloon (bar), was the baseball team’s biggest fan and was given free meals in the town hotel.
Nearly 70. Mary quit delivering the mail but remained in Cascade. The town's school closed to celebrate her unknown birthday twice a year. When she passed away in 1914, a simple cross was placed to mark her grave and her legend in the Wild West.

The number of golf Players in the US has dropped by 20 per cent in the past decade while in England numbers have fallen 29 per cent since 2008. But if the green no longer cuts it, where should business people swap business cards?
Real go getters(进取者)are cycling, entering triathlons and competing in Ironman competitions. Dr Josephine Perry, a sport psychology consultant who advises sport professionals and business people, says: "People network in a much freer way on a six-hour bike ride than if it's something that is forced upon you like a drinks reception. It's much less awkward.”
Can you really strike a deal, or even chat, while panting up a steep hill? "It is great for relationship building, " says Jonathan Harrison, managing director of investment banking at Robert W Baird, who organizes an annual London to Somerset ride for colleagues and clients. "It is an incredibly social thing. You talk causally as you go along. " he says, pointing out that the serious talking happens during the frequent breaks for coffee and lunch.
For many people, a day-long cycle ride is their idea of hell but Dr Perry says that training for an event in the work gym is the new going-to-the-pub. "It's a great place to make connections with people in other departments. It takes away the formal ranks,"she says.
Many experts, though, are skeptical that sport provides a good environment to network. Julia Hobsbawm, visiting professor of networking at Cass Business School, says sport is too often"a protective layer" that distracts people from building meaningful relationships.
She worries that cycling is no different from golf since it can keep up cliques(小团体). “Hanging out with people just like you is no good," says Ms Hobsbawm. Successful networking is about making connections with a wide-ranging selection of people.
She adds:"Groupthink in business is always a risk factor"---either in the boardroom or on two wheels.
12. Who believes cycling for network more relaxed?
A. Dr Josephine Perry B. Ms Hobsbawm C. Jonathan Harrison D. Dr Perry
13. What can we infer according to Jonathan Harrison?
A. Businessmen now strike a deal while cycling.
B. He often organizes riding for his customers and workmates
C. Formal talks won't happen in the process of training or exercise.
D. Cycling is nothing but a social thing.
14. In Ms Hobsbawm’s opinion, sport network________.
A. acts as a shelter for forming meaningful relationships
B. is successful because of providing a good environment
C. makes connections only with the same small group
D. is more likely to form groupthink than in the boardroom
15. What is the author's attitude towards cycling?
A. favorable B. not mentioned C. opposed D. doubtful
