In 2015 a paper published in a science magazine reported on the personality types of people living in various London districts. Extroverts (外向的人), the researchers who wrote it had discovered, favored Richmond. Those who were most open to experience gathered in Hackney. People in Barnet scored lower than average on emotional stability.
What this study did not address was whether someone’s home range reflects their personality traits or imposes them. In other words, is what is going on “nature” or “nurture” (培育) ? However, in a piece of research just published, Dr. Holtmann of Otago University, in New Zealand, and his colleagues have filled that gap—at least, they have filled it for dunnocks.
The dunnock is a European bird. It has, though, been introduced to New Zealand and its population has boomed there. It is a well-studied species, and, in particular, some being measurably bolder (更大胆的) and more tolerant of potential threats, such as nearby human beings, than others. The team’s research area was the Botanic Garden in Dunedin. This is open to the public, but some areas are more frequented by visitors than others. Dunnocks have small territories, so it was possible to measure the amount of human disturbance in a given territory with reasonable precision. And, by wrapping each of the dunnocks in the garden with colour-coded bands it was possible to identify individuals by sight. Altogether, the researchers looked at 99 of them.
They worked out a bird’s level of threat tolerance by the simple method of walking towards it, and then measuring how close one could get before the bird flew away. They did this several times for each bird every breeding season, and repeated the process over the course of three seasons.
A particular bird’s flight distance (ie, how closely it could be approached before it departed) was, they found, consistent within a breeding season. From season to season most birds got a little bolder—probably as they learnt more about the world and what they could safely get away with. But this increase in boldness with age was small compared with the different starting points of bold and shy birds when they first arrived in a territory. It did not, therefore, much affect the fact that, on average, birds’ flight distances were inversely correlated (负相关) with the level of human disturbance in their territories. This was a consequence of disturbed territories being settled by bold birds, and undisturbed territories by shy ones.
In the case of dunnocks, then, nature wins over nurture. Dr. Holtmann was able to show that personalities match circumstances, rather than being created by them. Dunnocks can recognize which places suit them best, and choose to settle in them shortly after they are fully fledged (羽翼丰满). Most likely, that is happening in London districts, too.
24. What does the underlined words “that gap” in the second paragraph refer to?
A. What the paper published in 2015 failed to handle.
B. Why extroverts favour certain areas in London district.
C. How Dr. Holtmann involved dunnocks in his study.
D. What the former and latter study have in common.
25. From Paragraph 3, we can know that dunnocks ________.
A. are native to New Zealand B. have distinct personalities
C. are bolder than human beings D. can be easily identified by its color
26. What conclusion did Dr. Holtmann draw from his study?
A. It’s nurture rather than nature that matters in the case of dunnocks’ behaviour.
B. Birds’ flight distances were in proportion to human disturbance in their territories.
C. Dunnocks choose their habitats wisely in the first place rather than adapt to them.
D. Bold birds and shy birds alike settle in undisturbed territories in the botanic garden.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To argue that circumstances cultivate certain personalities.
B. To entertain readers with some funny facts about dunnocks.
C. To present the finding of a scientific research about dunnocks.
D. To confirm the assumption that personalities match circumstances.

The World Health Organization report compared the “obesity-related behaviors” for youngsters across 42 nations. And it reveals UK kids are among the laziest.
Among teenage girls, the Scots toped the league table for most screen time, with 80 per cent spending at least two hours a day on computers. Wales came fourth with 76 per cent, and England seventh with 75 per cent. Girls in Armenia and Albania were least likely to spend hours idling online.
Screen time figures for boys were even higher. Wales was second in the European “couch potato” league, with 85 per cent glued to their screens for at least two hours. Scotland was third with 84 per cent, and England 15th with 77 per cent. Boys in Switzerland and Portugal were least likely to dedicate two hours a day to sitting in front of a computer.
Lead researcher Dr Jo Inchley, from the University of St Andrews, said social media was impacting on kids' health. She said, “We know there are risks, such as cyber bullying and impact on mental health. Also, there are longer-term impacts on physical health from being sedentary. One of the main challenges is that this kind of activity (social media and computer use) is so much part of young people's lives these days.” She said more needs to be done to get kids moving throughout the day.
Dr Steven Mann, research director for UK Active said the findings were “alarming”. He said, “Modern life has changed, but when teens are spending hours hunched over Facebook, Instagram and videogames, they simply aren't getting the exercise that they need. These alarming inactivity figures show that playtime is over before it has started for too many children, putting them at far greater risk of future conditions like heart disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes.”
Tam Fry, from the National Obesity Forum, warned Brit teens are now “slaves to hand-held devices”. And the WHO warns four in five fat teens will continue to struggle with their weight throughout life. The report also shows less than half of UK youngsters consume fruit or veg daily.
28. What do we know about the “obesity-related behaviors” for youngsters across 42 nations?
A. UK kids didn't exercise enough.
B. Girls spent more time on computers than boys.
C. Girls in Wales ranked the first in terms of screen time.
D. Only Swiss boys are among the laziest.
29. What does the underlined word “sedentary” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Cyber bullying. B. Computer using.
C. Exercising. D. Sitting or little activity.
30. What is the main reason for obesity for UK teens?
A. Less fruit or veg consuming. B. Too much use of electronic devices.
C. Too much playtime. D. Lack of physical education.
31. Why are these screen time figures alarming?
A. UK kids will be beaten.
B. All UK kids will suffer from overweight.
C. Risk of certain diseases will increase.
D. More hand-held devices need to be produced.

It would certainly be the most unique car on the school run. Dutch researchers have unveiled the Stella Lux, a four-sweater family car that is not only powered by the sun, but generates much more energy than it uses. It can travel 621 miles on a full charge, and even comes with an app to automatically work out the most efficient routes.
Stella Lux was developed by Solar Team Eindhoven (STE), a group of 21 students from different faculties of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). The team won the Cruiser Class title 2 years ago and that is in 2015 with its first car, Stella.
“By deciding to further improve on our solar-powered four-person car, we're once again aiming to win while at the same time proving that this energy-positive family car offers a feasible future prospect,” says Solar Team Eindhoven's Team Manager Tom Selten.
This year the student team is once again taking part in the biennial(两年一次的) Bridgestone World Solar Challenge in Australia. The race for solar-powered cars covers a distance of 3,000 km, and goes right through the heart of the outback from Darwin to Adelaide.
After the World Solar Challenge the team are planning a tour through the Netherlands, China and the USA. “With Stella Lux we want to take the next step in bringing a solar car to the consumer. Therefore we want to show Lux to as many people as possible and we hope to inspire them,” says Tom Selten. “We see a future where everybody drives a solar car, where all cars produce energy instead of consuming it.”
Stella Lux generates electricity via 5.8 sq m (62.4 sq ft) of solar cells and has an additional battery capacity of 15 kWh. A full charge provides a range of over 1,000 km (621 mi) in the Dutch climate or 1,100 km (684 mi) in the Australian climate, and the car has a top speed of 125 km/h (78 mph). To achieve this figure, the car has been designed to be both lightweight and aerodynamic. The efficiency of Stella Lux is improved by using a specially designed navigation system. The system monitors weather and chooses the best route accordingly.
32. What is TRUE about Stella Lux?
A. A solar-powered four-person car aimed at schools.
B. It produces less energy than it uses.
C. A full charge can't provide it with a range of 621 miles.
D. It works out the best route with the help of a specially designed navigation system.
33. What do we know about Solar Team Eindhoven?
A. They are car developers. B. They are car racers.
C. They are car advertisers. D. They are car dealers.
34. How is the car designed to achieve its top speed?
A. By making the car lightweight and aerodynamic.
B. By using a specially designed navigation system.
C. By generating electricity via solar cells.
D. By improving its solar-powered system.
35. What is the team's attitude towards this energy-positive family car's future?
A. Negative. B Worried. C. Optimistic. D. Uncertain.

Why we still need to read Dickens
Walk into any bookstore, and you can hardly avoid “bumping into” Charles Dickens. Many of Dickens’ works still sell well today. 36
As someone who teaches Dickens, the question of why we still read him is often on my mind. 37 One day nearly 10 years ago, however, when I was giving a lecture, I was telling the students that for Victorian readers, Dickens’s writing was a “tune-in-next-week” type of thing that generated crazes. 38 “But why should we still read this stuff?” the student asked. The answer I gave was only acceptable, “Because he teaches you how to think,” I said.
The question annoyed me for years, for years, and for years I told myself answers, but never with complete satisfaction. We read Dickens because he is not just a man of his own times, but also a man for our times. We read Dickens because we can learn from experiences of his characters almost as easily as we can learn from our own experiences.
39 But these are not exactly the reason why I read Dickens. My search for an answer continued until one day a text message came from a student of mine. “We still read Dickens’s novels,” she wrote, “because they tell us why we are what we are.” Simple as it was, that’s the explanation I had sought for years.
Dickens shines a light on who we are during the best of times and worst of times.
40 If you have time, go to pick up one of his many novels, read it and enjoy what it has to tell you about yourself.
A. Then a hand shot up.
B. I know that wasn’t really the reason.
C. And they are placed on outstanding shelves.
D. That question was never more troubling.
E. That’s why we still need to read him today.
F. I already know who it is I’ll meet in those novels.
G. These are all wonderful reasons to read Dickens.

M: That’s great. Kate, you know, ⑦I am thinking of getting a part-time job next year though I will have some new courses; because I really need much money and I don’t want to ask my parents for any more. ⑦Can you help me?
W:⑦No problem.

W: ⑧We are going to do some research on the pollution of the river in our town. Do you have any idea about it?
M: Since pollution is one of the biggest problems in the world, I’m sure a lot of people are interested in this topic.
W: Polluted water is a great danger to people’s health, so I think our work is very meaningful.
M: Right. Then, how can we do the research? How about visiting some factories along the river?
W: Good idea. Factories always pollute the environment by pouring waste water directly into rivers.
M: ⑨We can also borrow some books on this topic first.
W: ⑨OK. Let’s go to the library right away.

M: Good morning, Miss Green.
W: Good morning, Mr. King. (10)Why are you here? You should be on your vacation today.
M: Yes, I should. But guess what? Mr. Brown called me this early morning and said he’s on the way here to sign that important contract with me.
W: But I think he should know that your vacation starts from today.
M: He doesn’t know because you haven’t told him.
W: Uh dear! I am terribly sorry, sir. I spent the whole week preparing the contract. (11)And I totally forgot to call him! (12)I promise you I will never make this kind of mistake again.
M: (12)It’s OK, Miss Green. But could you please go and arrange a meeting room for me now? Mr. Brown and I will need to use it shortly.

W: Good morning! Getaway Travel Agency, how can I help you?
M: Good morning, (13)I was wondering if you could help me. You see, I’m thinking of going on holiday, but I’m not sure where to go.
W: Well, yes, of course. We’re here to help, but surely you must have some idea of the type of holiday destination you’d like. London, Paris or Sydney? We have all sorts of destinations and all types of holidays.
M: No, I’m sorry but I really don’t know. (13)I’ve never been on holiday before. Can you make some suggestions for me?
W:Look, I think the best thing would be that if you come in to see us, we can show you some brochures and help you make up your mind.
M:Great! I’ll come over right away. Where is your office?
W:(14)It’s very easy to find. We’re on Church Street, Chicago, next to the police station. The No. 9 bus passes by our gate or you can take the No. 10 subway. Oh, (15)bring your passport in case we need it.
M: OK, I’ll do that, thank you. (16)I’m on my way to the subway.

W: I have to say that I won’t forget the book Wild Ways forever. I was hooked(被吸引) from the very first chapter and I finished it in just one sitting. (17)Then I persuaded my friend William Baker to read the book, who was soon lost in it. I was close to tears several times when I read the experiences that happened to the leading character and I really considered myself to be one of the characters, although I was sometimes angry by the choices they made. (18)It’s well-researched and historically accurate, and I learned an awful lot about things that went on, which I never knew before. That’s the most important reason why I like the book. History is my favorite and my teacher Harry Kevin often encourages me to read novels related to history. Besides, (19)Margaret Emerson has a brilliant way with words, which are easy to understand. (20)I’m sure the literary world will see this book as such a masterpiece.
