George Washington was sent into the Army as a very young man. For a colonist (殖民地居民) of his generation, it was a respectable thing to do. It gave him an opportunity to make a living, and at the same time see the country full of wild animals and Indians.
As a lover of nature, George became a surveyor with the Army, a job leading him further and further into the wild, unknown country. As for the Indians, they were generally friendly and good trading partners. All in all, George’s young years were full of carefree wandering in a new land.
Yet suddenly one day, threatening news came: French soldiers were found on the other side of the Appalachians. The French claimed all land west of the mountains for New France. This was bad news for the governor of Virginia, who wanted the same land — at all costs. The governor of Virginia told 22-year-old George to give the French a simple message: leave the region immediately, or get ready for battle.
George did as he was told. But, of course, the French did not wish to leave. Finally, the conflict developed into a war, known as the French and Indian War, that is, the French and some Indian allies (同盟者) fighting the British colonials.
For George, it was a difficult time. To cut a long story short, it was the only time in his life that he had to surrender (投降) — at Fort Necessity. His army was surrounded by the French and Indians, badly outnumbered, so he had to give in. Luckily for him, the French allowed him and his army to leave with their horses and guns.
Twenty years later, George was dressed in an American uniform, and fighting not against the French, but against the British. In this war, it is said that George’s outstanding leadership inspired his American troops when they were starving and cold, and he became known from the war as the greatest general. It was no surprise that the victorious Americans chose him as their first president in 1789.
24. What do we know about George in his early years?
A. He worked as a trader. B. He earned his living as a soldier.
C. He had a happy childhood. D. He studied wild animals in depth.
25. What was the attitude of the governor of Virginia towards the French’s claim?
A. He was hopeful of it. B. He was really frightened.
C. He was against it firmly. D. He wanted to reach a compromise.
26. Which of the following is TRUE about the battle of Fort Necessity?
It ended with George’s defeat.
It was the pride of George.
It was aimed at protecting the Indians.
It proved that the French were cruel to George.

Giovanni Negron-Garcia said he literally jumped for joy when he learned he had earned a $7,000 academic scholarship to Kutztown University of Pennsylvania. But the 18-year-old from the city of Berks, came back to earth weeks later when he found out he would still have to spend nearly $10,000 a year for fees, room and board and books. “I’ am thinking to myself ‘No way, no way can I do this,’ ” said Mr. Negron-Garcia, who would be the first member of his family to attend college. Instead of college, he considered working alongside his mother at a battery factory.
Hundreds of thousands of high school students are hitting a similar crossroads this summer. At some schools, as many as 40% of students put down a deposit in the spring but fail to show up for classes in the fall, according to Lindsay Page, a professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Education.
The phenomenon, called summer melt, has cost individual colleges and universities hundreds of thousands of dollars annually in lost earnings for years. Dr. Page believes the summer melt rate has increased over the years as college has become more expensive. The most at-risk are first-generation students like Mr. Negron-Garcia. Many find it difficult to complete the required paperwork; others have parents who lose a job.
Now, as schools compete harder for a declining number of available high school seniors, they are targeting summer melt with new focus and more aggressive methods. They make efforts to stay in touch with students over the summer to keep them excited about school, helping them with problems that occur before they get discouraged and decide not to go. The measures have significantly lowered summer melt rates because they address relatively small problems that students may regard as huge difficulties.
Negron-Garcia told Kutztown’ s Warren Hilton, vice president for enrollment management, that he didn’t think he could afford to come. Dr. Hilton directed Mr. Negron-Garcia to nearly $4,500 in additional scholarship money. Mr. Negron-Garcia will now be attending and hopes to major in communication studies.
28. Why does the first paragraph tell the story of Negron-Garcia?
A. To introduce the topic of the text.
B. To offer background information.
C. To describe a promising student.
D. To show the importance of scholarships.
29. When is summer melt most likely to happen to students? '
A. When they show little interest in college paperwork.

When they have received a few academic scholarships.
When they have a lot of work experience before college.

30. What can we say about the efforts mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A. They are being discussed. B. They are hard to evaluate.
C. They have proved to be effective. D. They have cost a lot of money.
31. What will Negron-Garcia do this fall?
Work at a battery factory.
Go to Kutztown University.
Earn more academic scholarships.
Complete his high school education.

A friend recently sent me an article about English words that have, for one reason or other, fallen out of use. It struck me that many of them could be dusted off and readied for renewed service.
Take apricity for example. It refers to the warmth of the sun in winter. As I sit here and write, it is snowing, and I huddle (蜷缩) by a wood stove, while outside, icicles (冰锥) hang in front of the window like a portcullis (铁闸门), giving me the sense of being imprisoned. How I long for apricity!
Then there is a word that sounds almost too good to be true: deliciate, which means to enjoy oneself. I admit that it does sound like a word a child just learning English would make up. But isn’t it perfect? Consider the many ways we deliciate: eating tasty food, having travel adventures, lying in the warm sun, reading a good book. To say that one has “enjoyed” some experience sounds lukewarm when compared to the rich texture of “deliciate.” (“My dear lady, I not only enjoyed your meal, I deliciated in it!”)
A personal favorite among these forgotten words is fudgel, which means “pretending to work.” As a teacher, I can make great, and frequent, use of this wonderful word. “Susan, you say you’re trying hard, but let’s face it, you’ve been fudgeling.” This would seem, to me, to be the last word, for how could a student argue against such a pointed accusation?
And how much energy would it take to convince someone that jirble was once on active duty in the English language? It means “to pour carelessly.” “Oh, Billy, look at the mess you made. That’s the second time today you jirbled!” The risk here is that such a warning would not be taken seriously, and the child would deliberately jirble just for the sake of hearing the parent utter those playful syllables again.
All of this may sound ridiculous to you, but to me it makes perfect sense. 32. What does the underlined word “ lukewarm” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Funny and humorous. B. Clear and direct.
C. Not surprised or puzzled. D. Not enthusiastic or interested.
33. According to the text, who has been fudgeling?
高三英语试题 第6页(共 10 页)
A teacher who is very responsible.
A student who looks hardworking but actually is not.
A student who always argues with his teachers.
A teacher who often criticizes his students.
34. Why would the usage of the word “jirble” be risky?
A. Kids may jirble on purpose. B. It may distract the listeners.
C. Kids may repeat it. D. It might be misunderstood by kids.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Why English is popular B. A few old words worth rescuing
C. How to use words correctly D. My favorite English words
第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Have you ever thought about it? Computers of the future might replace humans. Some researchers have proposed that computers will have inbuilt intelligence. And, the computer
networking will be sure to result in the death of “distance”.
36
Looking at the history of computers, we realize they’ve developed from simple electronic calculators to modern handheld devices. Great scientists of the old times have brought brilliant advances to computing. 37 Computers can perform operations with great precision(精确度)
and at very high speeds.
What does the future hold for computer technology? Well, the future generations might cooperate with robots. 38 They may be employed for repetitive tasks that may threaten people’s lives. Computer researchers also picture the birth of fully developed artificial intelligence. Robots and artificial intelligence may make it possible for daily chores and difficult tasks at work to be performed without humans.
39 Owing to their small size, it’ll be easy to include them into the smallest devices, thus increasing their use. Their higher computation speeds will make many operations easier and further save human efforts and time.
In addition, computers may be able to communicate with humans like humans because they may be able to understand the context of words, thus making them better at understanding human language. 40 Anyway, computers have a bright future.
Robots may replace workers in various fields.
Together, they may work wonders in many fields.
So the world will become a very small place to live.
Computers of the future are going to be faster and smaller.
There are some other possibilities about the future of computers.
But modern computer technology has replaced humans in trying tasks.
In the future, they may be able to analyze like humans do and understand humor.
