Reading: Elias’ story
Part I Teaching objectives
Language knowledge and skills:
I will help my Ss learn how to describe people and let them know how to read a narrative text.
Moral objectives:
I will help my Ss to foster a better understanding on black people’s unfair situation and the devotion that Mandela has made. Furthermore, I want Ss have a better understanding on the meaning of “freedom for all”.
Part II Teaching methods
I will use Task-based teaching method and cooperation methods in order to let my students take active roles in class.
Part III Teaching focus and difficult points
Teaching focus: With the aid of some supportive reading exercises such as using the given words to fill in the blanks and underlining, let Ss get the main idea of the text and improving Ss’ reading skills such as finding the key words of the sentences.
Difficult points: Using the key words to comb the information of the passage and have a better understanding on the frame of the text .

I will use Multimedia, flashcards, pictures in order to make my class interesting and attract Ss’ attention.

Warming-up and pre-reading:
Task 1 (4 minutes)
Watch a video and think about the following questions:
1. What was Mandela like in many people’s eyes?
2. Why was Mr. Mandela arrested and put on trial?
(The purpose is letting Ss understand the background of the text)
While-reading: (16 minutes) (Today’s class just chooses half of the while-reading tasks)
Task 1 skimming:(4 minutes)
Read the text quickly and try to get the main idea.
(The purpose is letting Ss get familiar with this kind of biography style article and let them know how to get a general idea of the passage.)

Read the text carefully to get some information about: (12 minutes)

2) what Mandela did to help Elias and black people
3) what Elias did to support Mandela
(The purpose is having a further check to see if students really understand the detailed information of the text.)
Task 2 Discussion: (3 minutes)
1) Do you think it’s fair to treat other people badly only because they are black?
2) What good qualities can you learn from Nelson Mandela?
(The purpose of discussion is letting Ss have a new understanding of the background of the article and make a review of Mandela’s character and spirit.)

1. To many, Mandela was a hero, a man of courage, conviction and vision. He was often called humble, charming, loyal and a man who cared about others.
2. Because of his actions against the government.
Why did he fight against the goverment?
At that time, white people and black people were not equal, and this is totally unfair, so Mandela fighted for equal rights for blacks.
