Unit2 English Around the World
1. Test yourself:
Do you have any difficulty in understanding this poem?
O my luve is like a red, red rose,
That's newly sprung in June;
O my luve is like the melodie
That's sweetly played in tune.
As fair thou art, my bonie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry.
Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun;
And I will luve thee still , my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.
And fare thee weel, my only luve,
And fare thee weel a while;
And I will come again, my luve,
Tho'it wre ten thousand mile!
A Red, Red Rose
Robert Burns(1759–1796)
How long will I love you?
As long as stars are above you
And longer if I can
How long will I need you?
As long as the seasons need to follow their plan
How long will I be with you?
As long as the sea is bound to wash upon the sand
How long will I want you?
As long as you want me to
And longer by far
How long will I love you?
Why does the difficulty come about?
The difficulty in understanding Robert's poem mainly lies in some of the words he used, which people do not often use now.
Different words were used in the past and at present. English in the past was different from what is used now.
When one day an Australian met an American friend. I am from Australia...
: Hey, Alice. It's so hot, and let's go swimming by the seaside.
: Sounds good. Would you like me to bring my esky?
: Ok, you can put your cooler in my truck.
: Oh, will it fit in your lorry?
: Yes, I just rent it yesterday. Let's see how good it is.
: Awesome. Do you have some thongs up in your lorry?
: Of course, you can put your sandals in my back.
: OK, let's go.
They used different words when expressing the same things.
