It is not fair to blame the dodo for his disappearance.
2. This story is about how the dodo became extinct.WrongCorrect3. This story is about how the dodo and Man became friends.
This one only explains half the story. The dodo and Man did become friends but only because man wanted to kill all the dodos as easily as possible.Wrong4. This story is about how the other birds and animals tried to save the dodo.
This one is wrong because the other animals and birds did not do much to save the dodo. They warned him but did not help him.Wrong4. Listen to the tape and choose the correct answer to complete each sentence.

One day a new animal came to my island. His name was Man, and at first we seemed to be good friends. Listening TextTHE STORY OF THE DODOWe went everywhere together and I shared my food with him. However, I began to wonder why several of my dodo friends had disappeared. Then the number of our species began to decrease quickly. I was so worried that I asked the other animals and they all told me, “Your friends are being killed and eaten by Man while you are hunting for food.” Had man eaten them? I could not believe it. When I asked Man directly, he seemed surprised. “I haven’t seen the other dodos either.” he said. “Maybe someone else killed them.”I believed him but when more dodos disappeared I set a trap. I went off as if I was going to hunt but instead I hid in the forest and waited. Sure enough man came along. He ran after the last of my dodo friends and killed her. I felt so angry that I rushed out of my hiding place and straight atman’s spear. He killed me too. After that there were no more dodos in the world. So my motto is: be careful who you trust.Speaking and writing1. It is a pity that in the story nobody helped the dodo. In pairs choose another endangered animal which you know about. Analyze why this animal is endangered.
Is it being hunted and killed?
Does it not have enough food?
Is it because its habitat is being threatened?IntentionPurposeI’m going toto help/ save…I intend/mean/plan toto protect … from…I will so thatI feel likein order to …I’d like tobut do …I’m ready toto teach them a lessonI’d rather notto punish those who do harm to wildlife.S1: I’m going to do something to help dodo, for it was so lovely. I mean to drive it away in order to hide it in a cave. And I will dig a hole at the gate of the cave to trap man as he kills a dodo. I feel like attacking man myself if they would do harm to dodo. SampleAnd I’d like to teach man how to be friends. I would rather not tell you what I think of man. In fact man is the most dangerous enemy of dodo and all the endangered animals. S2: I can’t agree with you more. Man hunts all kinds of animals to make clothing, to eat their meat and even to get their bones cruelly. I’d like to see we humans treat them as our friends.Write a letter to WWF based on what you have discussed, asking them to help you save your endangered animal. All letters have a start and ending.WritingStep 1: Collect your ideas for the letter
and write down as notes.Step 2: Begin your letter like this:
Dear WWF,
I live on an island near …Step 3: Finish the letter by writing:
Yours sincerely.
(your name)Step 4: Check your writing and share your ideas with the class by reading them aloud.Dear WWF,
My friend, Chen Ting, and I have been doing some research on endangered animals. We found that the habitat of polar bears is disappearing because the ice at the North Pole is getting warmer. Sample writing:I worry that when is disappears altogether, there will be nowhere for the polar bears to live.
First, I suggest we are very careful with the energy we use. Global warming happens because we are putting too much carbon dioxide into the air. One of the ways we do this is by driving everywhere by car. So I suggest we think carefully before using our cars unnecessarily.
Second, instead of using our cars we should think about traveling by bus or by train. These forms of transport are more environmentally friendly and do not put so much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.Third, we can join WWF which is fighting to save the habitat of the polar bear. We can raise money to help them by making and selling cakes, selling crafts or giving talent shows and charging money for our parents to watch. I hope you will support us in our fight to save the home of the Polar Bears.
Yours sincerely
