Hannay agreed that he should be home in bed.
“Yes, and I would be,” he replied, “but yesterday I received a message saying that the new surveyor was coming to look at my work. If he comes and finds me away, I'll be in trouble.”
Suddenly Hannay had a bright idea—he could act as the road worker and get away from his enemies.
“You go off to bed,” Hannay said. “I'll do your job until the new surveyor comes.”
The road worker was pleased with his idea. He gave Hannay his hat and his old coat. Then he went home to sleep and perhaps to drink a bit more. Hannay put on the road worker's hat and coat and began to fix the road. About an hour later he heard a voice.

How is everything going? Something is troubling me very much. So I'm writing to ask for your advice.
I'm going to study in the senior middle school in September. I can live either at school or at home. But I can't decide because both have advantages and disadvantages. At home, I have my own room. So I can have a good sleep. However, I have to share one room with 5 students at school. Maybe I can't sleep well. It's a problem. Although I can have better food at home, I enjoy eating with my classmates. I think it's great fun and I can make more friends. If I live at home, I'll have to ride to school. It's a waste of time and not safe.

Do you ever forget a face? If not, then you could be a “super recognizer”.
Usually it's easy for someone to recognize(识别) the faces of their family and friends. But it could be difficult for them to remember faces that they've only seen once.
However, studies have found that super recognizers have amazing face recognition skills. They can remember at least 80 percent of faces they've seen. At least one in 50 people are super recognizers, reported Daily Mail.
Bournemouth University of UK recently carried out a study. They tried to find whether super recognizers have a different way to remember faces.
They found that when these people look at faces, they spend more time looking at the persons' noses.
Researchers also found that these people are not smarter than others. Their super ability usually only helps them recognize faces.
important finding is that there are subtypes(子类型) of super recognition.?
Some super recognizers never forget faces. But for some, if you show pairs of faces to them at the same time, they can quickly decide whether the faces are of the same person or two different people.
In fact, many super recognizers say they are good at “spotting”(认出) faces in a crowd.
These subtypes of super recognition could be used in many areas of life. For example, the skills could be very useful at a passport control checkpoint. Super recognizers could also help the police spot known troublemakers, bad people or even missing people in crowds.

How do you deal with plastic bags? Throw them away or reuse them? How about eating them? An Indian company named EnviGreen has made a kind of bag with natural ingredients. The bags look just like plastic ones, but they can be broken down in a few seconds. They bring no harm to the environment. People can even eat them.
EnviGreen Founder Ashwath Hedge spent four years doing experiments with a combination of 12 natural ingredients. They include potatoes, corn, vegetable oil and bananas. He made the ingredients into liquid (液体) and used the liquid to make the bag.
Although an EnviGreen bag is about 35 percent more expensive than a common plastic bag, it has many advantages. According to The Wall Street Journal, it takes 1,000 years for common plastic bags to break down. But an EnviGreen bag can naturally break down in less than 180 days. It also breaks down in less than a day in water, and in about 15 seconds in boiling water. Hedge was happy to show it in his interview. In the interview, he put an EnviGreen bag in water and ate it with a smile.
According to India's Minister of State for Atmosphere, Forest and Weather Change, the country produces more than 15,000 tons of plastic waste every day. But only 9,000 tons are processed (处理). In China, 3 billion plastic bags are used every day. Maybe the EnviGreen bag could be a solution to the world problem of plastic pollution.
12.According to Paragraph 1, which is NOT true about the EnviGreen bag?
A.It is made from natural materials.
B.It does a little harm to the environment.
C.It can break down easily.
D.It can be eaten by people.

A.Who founded the EnviGreen company.
B.How Hedge made the EnviGreen bag.

14.What is the disadvantage of the bag?
A.It is more expensive than a normal bag.
B.It takes a long time to break down.
C.It takes a long time to make.
D.It cannot hold heavy things.
15.What can we know from the last paragraph?
A.India produces the most plastic waste in the world.
B.India has processed all its plastic waste.
C.China produces more plastic waste than India.
D.The EnviGreen bag may solve the problem of plastic pollution.

As you know, you can't pay attention with an empty stomach. And you may feel good the whole day because of the delicious breakfast. Most importantly, you can improve the relationship with family members at breakfast. Though breakfast is the most important meal of the day, most students still miss it quite often. If you don't have breakfast, it will do harm to your brain, which makes you slow in reaction. More unluckily, it will lead to some illnesses. What's your opinion upon breakfast? I don't know how I did it. While the airplane was climbing, I was asking myself a lot of questions. For example, what would my parents think of me if the parachute didn't work? The master jumper looked at me and said, “Don't worry. We'll be with you.”
Then, I looked at my altimeter. We were at 10,000 feet. I looked at the door, and the light had turned green.
“Are you ready?” the master jumper asked me.
“Yes, I am.” I answered him.
We walked to the door. There were two master jumpers who would jump with me. One was on my left, and the other was on my right. I followed all the steps, and then we jumped.
I was flying! I looked at my master jumpers. They were with me, and they were smiling. I felt relaxed. I had to wait until I was at 6,000 feet to pull the rope.
Things were working without problems. There was no noise except the sound of the wind. I looked at my altimeter. It was at 6,000 feet. And I pulled the rope with my right hand. I almost stopped in the air. The harness(背带) was holding me. I was at 4,000 feet. I could see the airport and the place where I had to land. I was going to land in four minutes. Recently, a designer in Hong Kong has invented a special book that can transform(变形) into a piece of furniture. The special book is called Bookniture. It can be unfolded to become a chair or a small table. People can either carry it around for a portable(轻便的) chair or can store it in their homes to use as extra furniture.
The book was designed by Mike Mak. He came up with the idea after never having enough seats for his friends in his home in Hong Kong.
“I love having friends at my place, but I have never had enough seats for everyone—we would always end up with just sitting on the floor. I really want a seat that doesn't take up any floor space when I don't need it. One day, the empty space on my bookcase drew my attention. Then came the new idea—Bookniture, furniture hidden in a book,” said the 30-year-old designer.
Made from fully-recyclable kraft paper(牛皮纸), the book measures 33 cm by 18 cm. It expands(扩大) to 14 times bigger once it's opened, and can support up to 1,000 kg of weight. It comes in two colors, brown and black, and can be bought for between £55 and £57.

Some students prefer to join clubs to find study partners so that they can share experience face to face. What's more, they think working out problems together helps learn more easily.
As for me, I'd like to get study partners by going to summer camps because I can learn something new while having fun. Also, it's a good way to learn how to get on well with others.

Astronauts have very busy lives. Each day they are carefully planned by mission(任务) control. The 12-hour working day on the International Space Station(ISS) begins with a wake-up call. After a quick wash with a wet cloth, the crew(全体乘务员) have breakfast and run through the jobs for the day.
Space stations are like large houses that need much care and attention. Much of the crew's time is spent preparing and carrying out scientific experiments.
At least two hours each day is spent on exercise. It is necessary to keep the crew healthy. In some ways, living in a space station is like being on a desert island. A crew of two or three astronauts has to survive far from home for weeks or months.
If their mission is to be a success, they have to learn to live and work together as a team. Crew members have to learn to share jobs such as cleaning and repairs. They also have to talk about problems and discuss how to deal with them.
Astronauts first feel the influence of weightlessness(失重) when the rocket engines are turned off. Straight away, they begin to float(漂浮), held down only by seat belts. Weightlessness allows astronauts to appear super strong. They can lift objects that would be far too heavy to move on the earth.
Without the influence of gravity(重力), astronauts become weak. To stay fit, they have to exercise several hours each day. In a space station, there is no up or down. There is no difference between a floor and a ceiling(天花板). This can make astronauts feel sick until they get used to this strange environment.

American schools are different from those in China. In America, at the beginning of the term, students must choose their courses and teachers first. While in China, students usually have no chances to choose their courses and teachers.
Selecting(选择) is very important for students in America. So at the first term, don't select too many courses, or you'll feel very nervous and it may influence your study. Then you have to ask for some teaching plans. There is some information about subjects, time planning, marks and textbooks. At the same time, you must choose the teachers. Different teachers have different teaching methods. If the teacher is called “killer” by the last grade, many students will give up choosing him. Because this kind of teacher will leave too much homework, too many exams and give too low grades.
There is another thing after you select the course and the teacher. How to buy textbooks makes each student feel hard. The textbooks in America are very expensive. In order to save money, many students buy some used textbooks, and some students usually borrow textbooks from the school library. You must get ready before class. In class, discussing is very important. The teacher encourages students to ask questions or show their ideas. They don't usually ask you to sit well. Instead they allow you to sit or stand everywhere you like. They don't give you much homework to do. You can learn some knowledge and do exercises by yourself. So in American schools, you must do almost all things yourself.
8.You'd better not select too many courses at the first term because .?

On Miriam Gardsbane's 9th birthday two years ago, her aunt gave money to a group that cares for elephants. The woman, who lives in Kenya, told the group she was giving the money to celebrate Miriam's birthday. Miriam and her mother then visited Africa to learn how that money was helping to support elephants. Miriam fell in love with the animals and wanted to help save them.
A few months after visiting Africa, Miriam watched How I Became an Elephant, a documentary about the mistreatment of elephants in Thailand, and a young girl's campaign to save them. Miriam decided to make her own effort to raise money to save elephants.
Last year, Miriam created a group called They Deserve to Be Free after seeing a programme that showed young elephants being mistreated in Thailand.
She asked her friends to give money to the park rather than giving her birthday gifts. She made and sold baked goods, and made signs about elephant abuse.
She also created a plan to make and sell clay elephants. She asked her art teacher to help her make the elephants.
Miriam says she is lucky because her mother and her art teacher support her. Her father says Miriam is serious about helping the animals. He says that what her daughter is doing is making her a little bit more mature.
Miriam now knows a lot more about animals and what is happening to them.
She is proud of her work, and is happy that she can help elephants. She and her friends often sell their clay elephants at a local farmers' market.
Last year, she sold about $2,000 worth of them and sent all of that money to the Elephant Nature Park in Thailand.

Mail order is a term which describes the buying of goods or services by mail delivery(邮递). The buyer places an order for the desired products with the salesman through some remote methods such as through a telephone call or a website. Then, the products are delivered to the customer. The products are typically delivered directly to an address supplied by the customer, such as a home address, but sometimes the orders are delivered to a nearby retail location for the customer to pick up. Some businessmen also allow the goods to be shipped directly to a third customer, which is an effective way to send a gift to an out-of-town friend.
A mail order catalogue(目录) is a publication including a list of ordinary goods from a company. Companies who publish and operate mail order catalogues are treated as cataloguers within the industry. Goods are produced by people all over the world, such as in Australia, the USA, Canada, China etc. And now many cataloguers, just as with most retailers(零售商), are increasingly buying goods from China.

Last month, on Oct. 15, there was a marathon(马拉松赛) in the city of Luoyang, Henan Province. A lot of people in and around the city took part in it.
It was Sunday. There were some clouds in the sky in the early morning but the sun was shining when the race began. Eighteen boys and girls in my class, as well as four of my teachers, gathered on the south side of Luohe River to take part in the marathon. It was the first time that we had been in a marathon. We were excited and had fun running with people. We had to run 10 km. It was not a race, but an event to challenge ourselves. We helped each other during the run. When someone fell behind, others would go to encourage him or her not to give up. Tired but happy, all of us made it in about 90 minutes.
The marathon is like life, in which we can choose whether or not to keep going when we feel tired or meet difficulties. The biggest enemy(敌人) is ourselves, whom we should fight with and defeat(打败). We never know what will happen in the future, but what we can do is to try our best. If we can keep running, success will belong to us, because it's impossible to defeat a person who never gives up.
Challenges make life interesting and meaningful. This very first marathon will always be remembered as an unforgettable event in my life.

Do you know how chocolate is made? Recently my class had a field trip to the Cadbury Chocolate Factory in Toronto, Canada.
We were divided into 10 groups and visited an old building. The guide first explained the history of the factory. Then we got some earbuds(耳塞) to protect our ears from the noise of the machines. We also needed to wear disposable(一次性的) lab clothes and hairnets(发网) to make sure we didn't dirty their work area.
After these preparations, we went upstairs and entered the chocolate-making area. The floor was filled up with many machines. Each machine had a different job. The whole floor only had two people working, because machines did most of the work. Next, the guide explained the history of chocolate making. There was a picture of the factory 100 years ago, and there were more than 1,000 people working in the factory. But now the factory is very different. It's amazing how technology is changing people's life.
Later, we saw the chocolate-making process. We got a cocoa bean, some powdered(粉状的) chocolate and a final chocolate product. I opened the cocoa bean and tasted it. It tasted bitter, kind of like dark chocolate. It is the raw material used to make chocolate. The powdered chocolate tasted good already. It is a combination of cocoa beans, milk and sugar. “You have saved my horse,” Queen Olivia told the young boy standing before her. “Now you shall get a gift for what you did.” Peter nervously ran his finger through his brown hair. That day when he was working in the field, the shocked horse ran past him. Without thinking, he rushed out and controlled it. He didn't know it was the Queen's horse and never expected to get a gift. But he still felt happy for getting one.
Two of the queen's men appeared. One carried a mirror. Red jewels(珠宝) shone on top of the mirror's silver frame(框架). The other carried a wooden cage with a chicken inside it.
“Only one gift can be yours,” the queen said. “Choose wisely.” “That's easy,” Peter said. “I'll take the chicken.” Some of the queen's men laughed. It was clear that they thought he had made a foolish choice.
“And why did you choose the chicken?” the queen asked. “Well, I don't know much about jewels,” Peter answered. “But I do know about chickens. The chicken will provide eggs for my family for a long while.”
Queen Olivia smiled. “Then you did make a wise choice,” she said. “That mirror may look beautiful. But the jewels you see are only coloured glass, and the frame is painted silver. The chicken is much more valuable.” Peter took the chicken and bowed. “Thank you, your majesty.”
“You are a smart child,” the queen added. “ I could use a smart boy to help take care of my horses. Would you like to take the job?”Peter smiled.“Thank you very much!” he said excitedly. Many kids help parents to do chores in the house. They may wash the dishes, put laundry away or take out the trash. In return, some kids get money or other rewards from their parents, such as 20 minutes to play computer games.
But some people don't think that kids should get rewards for doing chores. One of them is Susie Walton, a parenting educator(育儿教育家) and family coach. She believes if kids get rewards, they will think that work isn't worth doing unless you get something in return. For example, kids won't sweep the floor if they see it is dirty. But they will clean the floor if their parents reward them for it.
“Every house is a team effort,” Walton said. “A home is a living space for everyone in the family. It's important for kids to see that we all have a responsibility to keep our home clean.”
Other people hold different opinions. They believe that money or other rewards encourage kids to do more chores. It also teaches them real world lessons. They can learn about how we need to work to make money.
Now, there are also apps that encourage kids to do chores. The apps give kids points and digital(数字的)gifts that can be used either online or in life.
With the app ChoreMonster, kids can get digital points after doing chores. Kids can exchange their points for real rewards, such as time to play video games or a trip to the mall.

Did you have any interesting dreams last night? Do you know everyone dreams? But not everyone remembers their dreams. A person can usually have up to seven dreams a night, and each dream usually lasts from 10 to 40 minutes.
Why do we dream? Scientists believe that we dream to remember because dreams come from our memories and they tell us a lot about ourselves. They also help us learn from the past and even help us solve problems.
Different dreams mean differently to people. For example, if you dream about flying, you are probably quite happy. This is a good time in your life. You may feel that other people see you as a leader. And when you dream that you didn't study for a test, it usually means you are worried about an important thing coming in your life.

When did you last say “I love you” to your father? If you can't remember, then you can get the chance this Father's Day on June 18.
Generally compared to a mother's gentle love, a father represents(代表) qualities like independence(独立), confidence, courage and adventure.

For example, Microsoft founder Bill Gates was quiet and didn't like to talk with others when he was a little kid. So his father often held family parties and let Bill play games with family members. “Games like soccer and swimming seemed to be silly at that time but they improved my ability of leading and cooperating(合作),” Gates once said in an interview with US Fortune magazine.
US actor Will Smith learned important lessons from small things taught by his father. His father once planned to pull down a wall of their shop and rebuild it. But little Will thought it was impossible. After a year and a half, they did it. “You don't try to build a wall. You are going to lay a brick(砖) every day. I'm glad that you're invited to dinner at your friend's home. Just as the saying goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”, you should pay attention to the table manners while dining.
When you are taking some food you like, use the public chopsticks if possible. Don't put too much food in your mouth. It's not polite to talk over the table. When you are drinking the soup, you can't make any noise. If you finish eating, don't leave too much food on your plate. The host may think you don't like the food or you waste a lot. Last but not least, don't forget to thank the host for the delicious food. Just a small talk will leave a deep impression.

There are some similarities and some differences between growing up in Australia and China.
I lived in a small town of about 20,000 people, called Gympie on the east coast of Queensland. It is not as crowded in Australia, so people can live in houses that have front and back yards. I always enjoyed playing on the grass in the front yard.
Each weekday morning I would wake up at about 7 a.m. and get ready for school. My favourite cereal(谷物) was called Weet-Bix. I often ate nine or ten Weet-Bix to copy my favourite sports stars that I saw on TV!
As well as playing sports, I also played the saxophone. Some mornings I went to school early for band practice and played my saxophone, before classes started at 8:30 a.m. English and PE were my favourite subjects at school. My friends and I played tag(捉人游戏) or handball during our lunch breaks.
School finished at 3 p.m. After that I would usually go to sports training. In summer I played cricket and in winter I played hockey. Sometimes I played tennis too!
When I finally got home I was very tired. For a special treat, my mother sometimes cooked my favourite meal: apricot(杏子) chicken! Then I did my homework and read a book. I always went to sleep before 9 p.m.
On the weekend I played sports, visited a friend's house or watched TV.

Once upon a time, a tortoise lived in a pond(池塘) with two ducks. She enjoyed being with them because she could talk as much as she liked.
After many years, the pond became very low in a dry season and finally it dried up. The two ducks decided to fly to another place. They went to say goodbye to the tortoise.
“Oh, don't leave me behind!” begged(恳求) the tortoise. “Take me with you. I must die if I am left here.”
“ ” said the ducks. “How can we take you with us?”?
Finally, the ducks had a nice idea. They said, “We will each take hold of one end of a stick, and you take the middle in your mouth. Then we will fly up in the air and carry you with us. But remember not to talk! If you open your mouth, you'll be lost.”
The tortoise said she would not say a word.

Still in shock! I moved around the house purposelessly trying to decide what to put into the suitcases(行李箱). Earlier that evening, I'd received a call telling me that my brother was killed in a car crash. “Come as soon as you can,” cried my mother.
I wanted to hurry to her at once. But my husband, Larry, and I were packing to move from New York to Seattle. Our house was in total mess. Supper dishes sat on the kitchen table. Toys lay everywhere. I purposelessly picked things up and put them down. Mother's crying went through my head again and again.
Larry called some friends to tell them what had happened. Someone asked to speak to me. “If there's anything I can do, let me know.” But I didn't know what to ask for.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. It was Emerson. He and his wife Donna lived in the block nearby.
“I've come to clean your shoes,” he said.
I asked him to repeat.
“Donna had to stay with the baby,” he said, “but we want to help you. I remember when my father died, it took me hours to clean our shoes for the funeral(葬礼). Give me all your shoes.”
I gathered all our dirty shoes to the kitchen. Emerson got to work right away. Watching him devoting himself to one task helped me pull my own thoughts into order. I told myself to wash clothes first. Then, Larry and I bathed the children and put them to bed. One job after another.
When we returned to clear the dishes, Emerson had left. All our shoes stood in a line against the wall, clean, shining. I couldn't help crying. Early next morning, we left for the airport with all the jobs done.
Now whenever I hear of a friend who's lost a loved one, I no longer call with the polite offer, “If there's anything I can do…” Instead I try to think of one specific task that suits that man's need, like taking the dog to the boarding kennel, or house-sitting during the funeral. If the person asks, “How did you know I needed that done?” I reply, “Because a man once cleaned my shoes.”

Dear Editor Wang,
As a school leaver, the old memories can't be wiped off my mind easily.
One afternoon, the classroom was empty after the sports meeting. Accidentally, I caught sight of a box of colour pencils on the floor. I didn't know whose it was, but I picked it up and kept it as my own.
The next day, our head teacher asked me about the pencils but I lied to him. He didn't say anything but treated me as usual. Afterwards, my classmates still played with me. As time went by, I felt sorry for what I did. In the end, I told my head teacher the truth. He didn't scold me but comfort me. It was his trust that made me face my mistakes bravely. In fact, he taught me a good lesson though he didn't say a single word.
I hope my story can help the newcomers a lot.
Yours,
Li Ping
