Families were very important to Chinese people in ancient times. In ancient China children not only lived with their parents, but also their grandparents, aunts or uncles. Rich people also lived with servants.
Usually, men went to work to make money. And women took care of children and did housework. But if the family was not rich, women had to go out to work to make money, too. Even the strong teenagers had to work, too. So, the children had to stay with their grandparents or older sisters or brother.
In ancient families, boys often went on living with their families even after they grew up. They spent their whole lives living in the same house. But this was different to girls. Girls went to live in their husbands' homes after they married.
It is a very important tradition for Chinese to respect old people. The oldest people in ancient families continued to be in charge of the families until he died.
