Benjamin Franklin was a man of many talents; a great inventor, philosopher(哲学家), writer, statesman(政治家),?economist?and musician. Franklin was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1706. He died in 1790 at the age of 84.
At the young age of 12, he became an apprentice(学徒) to his older brother James who was a printer and ran a newspaper in Boston. The newspaper,The New England Courant, was the first of its kind in Boston. At age 15, Franklin desperately wanted to write for the paper. Knowing that his brother would not allow him to do so, he created the pen name Silence Dogood. Later, Franklin’s writings became extremely popular and his brother was very jealous of his success when he knew that he was the author.
Among his many accomplishments, Franklin is famous for his scientific work with electricity. He was the first to prove that lightning was in fact electricity. He did this by developing his famous kite experiment. From his work in electricity, he invented the lightning rod.
Franklin is one of the founding fathers of the United States. He played an important role in getting military(军事) and financial assistance from France which was very important in the young nation’s independence from British rule.
