When I planned to study in the US several months ago, I was excited but also so nervous to live in a brand new place. I couldn’t help thinking how bad the situation could be when I arrived. What if I couldn’t adapt (适应) to the new environment? What if I couldn’t understand what other people were talking about? The more I thought about it, the worse my mood got.
When I was on the airplane, I kept telling myself that I had to be strong when facing any problems. However, when I got off the plane, all my worries quickly went away. The sky there was so blue. Trees and flowers were everywhere. I also met many friendly people who were willing to help me. My heart became calm and peaceful. I became eager to experience more in my new country.
The first big difference I felt was in the classroom. In China, because of the traditional culture, students respect teachers so much that teachers are very superior (地位高的) to students.
But in my school in the US, teachers, even the headmaster, are like students’ friends. Students can joke with their teachers, do what they want in class and ask any questions. For example, they can ask to go to the bathroom during class. This may be unacceptable for many Chinese teachers. I like the easy atmosphere (气氛) at school. I feel students have a kind of respect in the class and more freedom.
There must be more things for me to explore in the US. I can’t wait to experience them all!

He has led many important projects, including the design of the new Beijing Library, the planning and designing of Chang’an Avenue and the expansion (扩大) of Tian’anmen Square. He has also joined in the planning work for many cities, including Beijing, Xiamen and Guilin.
All of Wu’s designs follow the idea of the “preservation (保存) of Chinese traditions and the harmony of cities, humans and nature”. He cares about how people feel living inside one of his buildings. “Common people’s living problems are the most important part of architecture,” Wu once told his students.
In 1987, he took on the rebuilding of Beijing’s Ju’er Hutong. Many architects found it difficult to make new styles fit naturally inside old Beijing.
However, Wu believed Beijing’s old city was special in the history of world cities. Wu put his heart into the project. He decided not to pull down all the old houses. He used the old style as much as he could to keep a sense of Beijing’s heritage (遗产).
Wu’s final product reflected traditional Chinese poems and paintings – people living closely together in a yard, just like old times. His design has won several international awards including the UN World Habitat Award (世界人居奖).

Hannay was nervous. His enemies were searching for him. All around him were grassy hills without trees. He had nowhere to hide. How could he escape?
Hannay walked along the country road for a long time. Then he saw a road worker, who was working alone, fixing the road. Hannay could see the road worker was not feeling well. Hannay came up to him and said “How are you?”
“My head hurts,” the road worker said, “I can't do it. I want to go home to bed. My daughter got married yesterday, and I drank a lot of wine with my friends. That's the problem!”
Hannay agreed that he should be home in bed.
“Yes, and I would be,” he replied, “but yesterday I received a message saying that the new surveyor was coming to look at my work. If he comes and finds me away, I'll be in trouble.”
Suddenly Hannay had a bright idea—he could act as the road worker and get away from his enemies.
“You go off to bed,” Hannay said. “I'll do your job until the new surveyor comes.”

How do you deal with plastic bags? Throw them away or reuse them? How about eating them? An Indian company named EnviGreen has made a kind of bag with natural ingredients. The bags look just like plastic ones, but they can be broken down in a few seconds. They bring no harm to the environment. People can even eat them.
EnviGreen Founder Ashwath Hedge spent four years doing experiments with a combination of 12 natural ingredients. They include potatoes, corn, vegetable oil and bananas. He made the ingredients into liquid (液体) and used the liquid to make the bag.
Although an EnviGreen bag is about 35 percent more expensive than a common plastic bag, it has many advantages. According to The Wall Street Journal, it takes 1,000 years for common plastic bags to break down. But an EnviGreen bag can naturally break down in less than 180 days. It also breaks down in less than a day in water, and in about 15 seconds in boiling water. Hedge was happy to show it in his interview. In the interview, he put an EnviGreen bag in water and ate it with a smile.
According to India's Minister of State for Atmosphere, Forest and Weather Change, the country produces more than 15,000 tons of plastic waste every day. But only 9,000 tons are processed (处理). Kicking stone balls During the Qing Dynasty, kicking a stone ball around was a popular game in the northern part of China, and it was often played in winter to keep warm.
Playing hide-and-seek Hide-and-seek is a traditional game for children, popular around the nation. There are two ways to play; covering a child's eyes while other kids run around to tease(戏弄) him or, more commonly, others hide and one child must try to find them.
Flying kites Kites have quite a long history. The earliest kites were made of wood, instead of paper. The three most famous kites are the Beijing kite, Tianjin kite and Weifang kite. Each has its own feature. For example, the bird-shaped kite with long wings is a special kind of the Beijing kite.

Have you ever met a person who is an author, farmer and explorer? How about a doctor who believes that we should all learn to be good at giving up? These were some of the people I met and the ideas I heard when I attended the TEDxABQ meeting.
TEDx events are held all over the world, from cities like Amsterdam and Sydney to even small towns like my hometown of Albuquerque. Speakers are invited from everywhere in the world to share encouraging ideas about science, education or simply the art of living.
At that meeting, workers encouraged us to use our smartphones to tweet live (发微博直播) from the event and share pictures with others. Then, every tweet was put onto a huge screen in the hall so even the audience could take part in the discussion.
The atmosphere was comfortable. Everyone walked around wearing red T-shirts. We were served cookies and sandwiches. As the event began, I talked to some of the audience, which was full of people from different backgrounds, including engineers and teachers. I felt like the youngest one there!
It was cool to see how the speakers could share their many years’ experience in a 15-minute speech. I still remember that an architect said school buildings affected children’s learning and behavior. A student described how her autism (自闭症) helped her see connections between technology and scientific problems.
The TEDx experience is one that is best heard and not told. The ideas at the event have opened my eyes. I’ve decided to try to think differently in life, just like those speakers!

Are you still worried about how to get your phone charged(充电)? Now, a 19-year-old teenager can help you to solve this problem. He has invented a phone charger which uses energy from your own body to charge your phone.
Hand Energy, the wonderful invention of the inventor Michael Vaga, allows you to charge your phone simply by shaking your hand, which starts the charger's gyroscope(陀螺仪) to produce electricity. And the electricity can then either be stored or used to charge a phone immediately.

Dear Sam,
How is everything going? Something is troubling me very much. So I'm writing to ask for your advice.
I'm going to study in the senior middle school in September. I can live either at school or at home. But I can't decide because both have advantages and disadvantages. At home, I have my own room. So I can have a good sleep. However, I have to share one room with 5 students at school. Maybe I can't sleep well. It's a problem. Although I can have better food at home, I enjoy eating with my classmates. I think it's great fun and I can make more friends. If I live at home, I'll have to ride to school. It's a waste of time and not safe.
It's too hard for me to make a decision. I would be very glad if you could give me some suggestions.

Jia Meng used to keep a diary (日记) in Chinese. But one year ago, the 14-year-old girl from Heilongjiang began to write her diary in English, because Jia found her mother was reading her diary secretly. She changed the language because her mother can’t read English. “It’s like killing two birds with one stone. ” said Jia, “My privacy (隐私) becomes safe and my English improves a lot. ”
Jia’s mother is not the only mom who reads her child’s diary. Recently, Renmin University of China had a national survey among over 23, 000 parents. The results show that 40% of parents read their children’s secrets. That’s why, like Jia, many teenagers try to find ways to protect(保护) their privacy.
Wu Lei, 15, of Shanxi, keeps a diary, too. But he doesn’t write it on paper. He writes online which he thinks is perfectly safe because his parents know nothing about the Internet.
Lu Huan, 13, of Guangdong, said her parents always secretly listened to the talk between her friends and her on the telephone in their room. To solve this problem, Lu asked her parents to buy her a mobile phone.
“Parents want to know what is going on in their children’s lives, ” said Shao Xiazhen, a teenage expert in Beijing. “But sometimes they go about it the wrong way. ” Shao suggested to teenagers that instead of hiding their secrets, talking to parents should be a better solution. “If your parents know that you are safe, they’ll let you keep your secrets. ”
根据短文内容,判断正(T)误(F)

Do you ever forget a face? If not, then you could be a “super recognizer”.
Usually it's easy for someone to recognize(识别) the faces of their family and friends. But it could be difficult for them to remember faces that they've only seen once.
However, studies have found that super recognizers have amazing face recognition skills. They can remember at least 80 percent of faces they've seen. At least one in 50 people are super recognizers, reported Daily Mail.
Bournemouth University of UK recently carried out a study. They tried to find whether super recognizers have a different way to remember faces.
They found that when these people look at faces, they spend more time looking at the persons' noses.
Researchers also found that these people are not smarter than others. Their super ability usually only helps them recognize faces.
important finding is that there are subtypes(子类型) of super recognition.?
Some super recognizers never forget faces. But for some, if you show pairs of faces to them at the same time, they can quickly decide whether the faces are of the same person or two different people.
In fact, many super recognizers say they are good at “spotting”(认出) faces in a crowd.
These subtypes of super recognition could be used in many areas of life. For example, the skills could be very useful at a passport control checkpoint. Super recognizers could also help the police spot known troublemakers, bad people or even missing people in crowds.
