When my family moved to America in 2010 from a small village in Guangdong, China, we brought not only our luggage, but also our village rules, customs and culture. One of the rules is that young people should always respect(尊敬) elders. Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment in the United States.
I had a part-time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One time, when I was serving food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I always respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed great displeasure. My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long lecture about how sensitive(敏感) Americans are and how they dislike the description(描述) “old”. I then walked back to the table and apologized(道歉)to the wife. After the couple heard my reason, they understood that the problem was caused by cultural differences, so they laughed and were no longer angry.
In my village in China, people are proud of being old. Not so many people live to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and experience. Young people always respect older people because they know they can learn from their rich experience.
However, in the United States, people think “growing old” is a problem since “old” shows that a person is going to retire or that the body is not working well. Here many people try to keep themselves away from growing old by doing exercises or jogging, and women put on makeup, hoping to look young. When I told the couple in the restaurant that I respect the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had failed to stay young. I had told them something they didn’t want to hear.
After that, I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don’t respect them any more; I still respect them, but now I don’t show my feelings through words.
1. Jack brought the couple their food very fast because _______.
 A. the manager asked him to do so B. he respected the elderly
  C. the couple wanted him to do so D. he wanted more pay
2. When Jack called the couple “elderly”, they became _______.
  A. nervous B. satisfied C. unhappy D. excited
3. In Jack’s hometown, _______.
A. people dislike being called “old”
B. people are proud of being old
C. many people reach the age of seventy or eighty
D. the elderly are the first to get food in restaurants
4. After this experience, Jack _______.
  A. lost his job in the restaurant B. made friends with the couple
  C. no longer respected the elderly D. changed his way with older people
5. Which of the following is TRUE?
  A. The more Jack explained, the angrier the couple got.
  B. Jack wanted to show his feelings through words after his experience.
  C. The manager went back to the table and apologized to the couple.
  D. From this experience, Jack learned more about American culture.

When you are about to do something brave, a cheerful wish of “Good luck!” from a friend can be helpful. But if you think you need lots of luck, what else might you do?
In the UK and US there are some strange traditions for bringing yourself a little more good luck. Some are hundreds of years old and some are much newer.
Have you heard the saying “When you wish upon a star”? If you are looking up at the sky on a clear night and you see a sudden flash of light, it is probably a shooting star! Seeing one doesn’t happen very often. The saying goes that if you see one you have been very lucky, and so if you make a wish, it will come true.
Maybe you have heard of the lucky rabbit’s foot. Some people believe that rabbits are lucky animals, so they carry a part of the rabbit, its foot, for good luck. There are all kinds of strange, unclear rules about which of the rabbit’s feet is the luckiest. It is said that this good luck tradition is the oldest one of all. However, as the funny saying goes, “Depend on the rabbit’s foot if you will, but remember it didn’t work for the rabbit!”
People in Britain love trees. If it is autumn and leaves are falling from the trees, some people try to catch the leaves as they fall because they think each leaf they catch will bring them a lucky month in the following year—they will need to catch 12 falling leaves to have a whole year of good luck!
( )1. ________ is mentioned in the oldest good luck tradition.

B. A falling leaf
C. A cheerful wish from friends

( )3. British people try to catch 12 falling leaves because ________.
A. the leaves fall in autumn
B. there are so many leaves to catch
C. the leaves can bring them a lucky month
D. they want to have a whole year of good luck

There are some similarities and some differences between growing up in Australia and China.
I lived in a small town of about 20,000 people, called Gympie on the east coast of Queensland. It is not as crowded in Australia, so people can live in houses that have front and back yards. I always enjoyed playing on the grass in the front yard.
Each weekday morning I would wake up at about 7 a.m. and get ready for school. My favourite cereal(谷物) was called Weet-Bix. I often ate nine or ten Weet-Bix to copy my favourite sports stars that I saw on TV!
As well as playing sports, I also played the saxophone. Some mornings I went to school early for band practice and played my saxophone, before classes started at 8:30 a.m. English and PE were my favourite subjects at school. My friends and I played tag(捉人游戏) or handball during our lunch breaks.
School finished at 3 p.m. After that I would usually go to sports training. In summer I played cricket and in winter I played hockey. Sometimes I played tennis too!
When I finally got home I was very tired. For a special treat, my mother sometimes cooked my favourite meal: apricot(杏子) chicken! Then I did my homework and read a book. I always went to sleep before 9 p.m.
On the weekend I played sports, visited a friend's house or watched TV.
Gympie was a great place to grow up!

A new taxi service in Stockholm is offering its passengers a chance to relieve stress?on the go. They’ve got psychotherapists occupying the back seats of the taxis, offering free consultations. The test was started by a company called Taxi?Stockholm, which claims it’s the first project of its kind in the world.
The idea was formed when the owners of Taxi?Stockholm realized that people are more likely to talk about their problems on boring, quiet drives. They even have data to back up the theory; according to spokeswoman Natalia Santos, around 70 percent of people said their taxi journeys were a good time for reflection and that they often found their minds wandering.
“And when you think about it, the drivers can even become like therapists,” she added.
Mia Fahlén, one of the psychologists on board, said that she would have to be flexible, because she?wouldn’t know exactly how long a trip could be. But she believes that a lot could be accomplished from even a short 10-minute journey. “A lot of people are lonely,” she explained. “There are so many single people in Stockholm. And a lot of the people I meet from abroad tell me they’re frustrated with Sweden. They say it’s really hard to meet people and that even when they try, the Swedes can be very quiet.”
Of course, you’d not have to be lucky to catch these taxis, but if you’re really excited about the idea, you could book a trip in advance. It will work out cheaper than seeing a regular therapist; an hour-long session with Fahlén costs up to 1,200 kronor ($165).
When asked if this is all a publicity stunt in the wake of their new competitors, taxi-app service Uber, Santos denied it. She said that the staff at Taxi Stockholm are actually quite optimistic about being able to help people through their service.

Still in shock! I moved around the house purposelessly trying to decide what to put into the suitcases(行李箱). Earlier that evening, I'd received a call telling me that my brother was killed in a car crash. “Come as soon as you can,” cried my mother.
I wanted to hurry to her at once. But my husband, Larry, and I were packing to move from New York to Seattle. Our house was in total mess. Supper dishes sat on the kitchen table. Toys lay everywhere. I purposelessly picked things up and put them down. Mother's crying went through my head again and again.
Larry called some friends to tell them what had happened. Someone asked to speak to me. “If there's anything I can do, let me know.” But I didn't know what to ask for.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. It was Emerson. He and his wife Donna lived in the block nearby.
“I've come to clean your shoes,” he said.
  I asked him to repeat.
“Donna had to stay with the baby,” he said, “but we want to help you. I remember when my father died, it took me hours to clean our shoes for the funeral(葬礼). Give me all your shoes.”
I gathered all our dirty shoes to the kitchen. Emerson got to work right away. Watching him devoting himself to one task helped me pull my own thoughts into order. I told myself to wash clothes first. Then, Larry and I bathed the children and put them to bed. One job after another.
When we returned to clear the dishes, Emerson had left. All our shoes stood in a line against the wall, clean, shining. I couldn't help crying. Early next morning, we left for the airport with all the jobs done.
Now whenever I hear of a friend who's lost a loved one, I no longer call with the polite offer, “If there's anything I can do…” Instead I try to think of one specific task that suits that man's need, like taking the dog to the boarding kennel, or house-sitting during the funeral. If the person asks, “How did you know I needed that done?” I reply, “Because a man once cleaned my shoes.”
1.The writer didn't know what to put into the suitcases because .?
A.she couldn't do it on her own
B.she was too sad to do anything
C.she wanted to take everything to Seattle
D.she was not good at housework
2.Here's a time line of what happened in the story.
The writer's brother was killed in a car crash.→→The writer washed the clothes.→They left for the airport.
Which of the events should go in the empty box above?
A.Emerson came to clean the shoes.
B.The couple bathed the children.
C.They cleared the supper dishes.
D.The writer found the shoes cleaned.
3.If one of her friends has lost a loved one, what will the writer probably NOT do?
A.Call her friend to ask what she can do.
B.Look after her friend's young children.
C.Take her friend's dog to the boarding kennel.
D.Offer her friend house-sitting during the funeral.
4.Which sentence best expresses the theme of this story?
A.One person's loss is another's gain.
B.An act of kindness is often rewarded.
C.A near neighbour is better than a brother far off.
D.Do something specific to help those in need.

阅读下列短 文,从每小题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
Last summer I sat at a long picnic table near a breathtaking mountain. While the parents were eating dinner, the kids ran up a trail in search of a secret fort. Twenty minutes later one excited little boy, James, interrupted the adult conversation.
“Mom, Mom, you can’t believe what we found!”
Lovingly, his mother smiled and whispered, “I can’t wait to hear, James, but grown-ups are talking, and there will be a pause in the conversation. Please wait for the pause.”
On my other side, another boy came running up to his mother with equal enthusiasm.
“Mom, Mom, we had so much fun—”
“I am talking! Don’t interrupt,” she said.
“But, Mom—”
“Be quiet! Can’t you see that I am talking??”
“But Mom we found the—”
“Shut up, Steve!” she yelled.
My heart sank. I knew what was coming. James, on my right, patiently waited for the pause, enthusiasm still alive and well. Steve, on my left, walked away from the table, looking shamed, carrying with him stories of secret forts never to be shared.
What markedly different messages to the child! “Wait for the pause” versus “Shut up” gets incorporated (包含)so differently into a child’s developing sense of self.
Harsh(刺耳的) words have bad effects. That’s why I want you to promise to delete the phrases “Shame on you” or “You should be ashamed” from your vocabulary. I have seen countless patients whose parents’ thoughtless words echoed in their heads and chipped(消除) away at their self-worth, even decades later.
So we have to discipline ourselves to make our instructions constructive. One great tool is to look for positive behavior to reinforce. Don’t ignore the things that your kids are doing right. Thank your children. Tell them that you noticed how they waited patiently or cleared their plate without being asked. Chances are that they will do it again. Let them feel noticed, appreciated, and valued. There’s no better way to shape behavior.

1. Why does the writer tell us the story at the beginning?
A. To praise James’ mother. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To stress Steve’s bad manners. D. To describe the beauty of nature.
2. The writer suggests parents not use harsh phrases such as “Shame on you” because_____.
A. they can show parents’ weakness
B. kids may be likely to copy them
C. their meanings are hard to understand
D. harsh words have bad effects on kids
3. Which of the following is not proper for parents when offering advice?
A. I like the way you deal with it.
B. Awesome, you just make it.
C. Fantastic!
D. Must I keep repeating?
4. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Love kids through proper language
B. Let kids realize their mistakes alone
C. Never ignore kids’ mental growth
D. Learn to share secrets with kids
4. 答案:A。文章标题题。文章主要讲述父母在孩子的成长过程中要恰当使用一些鼓励性的语言来促进孩子成长, 而不是一棒子打死, 故答案为A。

Once upon a time, a tortoise lived in a pond(池塘) with two ducks. She enjoyed being with them because she could talk as much as she liked.
After many years, the pond became very low in a dry season and finally it dried up. The two ducks decided to fly to another place. They went to say goodbye to the tortoise.
“Oh, don't leave me behind!” begged(恳求) the tortoise. “Take me with you. I must die if I am left here.”
“ ” said the ducks. “How can we take you with us?”?
Finally, the ducks had a nice idea. They said, “We will each take hold of one end of a stick, and you take the middle in your mouth. Then we will fly up in the air and carry you with us. But remember not to talk! If you open your mouth, you'll be lost.”
The tortoise said she would not say a word.
When they were above the treetops, the tortoise wanted to say, “How high we are!” But she remembered what the ducks said and kept still. When they passed the church(教堂), she wanted to say, “What is that which shines?” But she remembered what the ducks said and held her peace. Then they came over the village square. Many people looked up and shouted, “Look! The ducks are carrying a tortoise!”
The tortoise forgot everything and said, “Hush, you silly people! It's none of your business.” She opened her mouth and fell to the ground. And that was the end of the tortoise.

About a quarter of the world drives on the left, and the countries that do are mostly old British colonies(殖民地) like Australia, and Ireland.?But Thailand, Indonesia and Japan?also do so.
This strange quirk(奇事) puzzles the rest of the world; however, there is a perfectly good reason.?Up to the late 1700's, everybody travelled on the left side of the road because it's the sensible option for feudal(封建的), violent societies of mostly right-handed people.?Soldiers with their swords under their right arm naturally passed on each other's right, and if you passed a stranger on the road you walked on the left to ensure that your protective sword arm was between yourself and him.?
Revolutionary France, however, overturned this practice as part of its sweeping social rethink. A change was carried out all over continental Europe by Napoleon. The reason it changed under Napoleon was because he was left handed his armies had to march on the right so he could keep his sword arm between him and any opponent.?From then on, any part colonised by the French was right hand.?

After the American Revolutionary War(1775-1783), the US became independent and decided to make traffic drive on the right in order to cast off all remaining links with its British colonial past.?Once America became the center of the car industry, if you wanted a good reliable vehicle, you bought American right-hand-drive cars.?From then on many countries changed out of necessity.?

Today, the EU would like Britain to fall into line with the rest of Europe, but this is no longer possible. It would cost billions of pounds to change everything round. The last European country to convert to driving on the right was Sweden in 1967. While everyone was getting used to the new system, they paid more attention and took more care, resulting in a reduction of the number of road accidents.?

1. Why did people travel on the left before the late 18th century?
A. They were required to do so.
B. They were mostly left-handed.
C. It was easier to cross the street.
D. They could feel safer from attacks.
2. What’s was Napoleon’s attitude to walking on the left?
A. Support. B.Disapproval. C. Doubt. D. Sympathy.
3. For American, driving on the right was a way to show .
A. the connection with France was broken
B. the US was no longer ruled by the UK
C. the American Revolution War had ended
D. America was the center of the car industry
4. What is the main cause of the UK failing to adopt the new system?

Dear Editor Wang,
As a school leaver, the old memories can't be wiped off my mind easily.
One afternoon, the classroom was empty after the sports meeting. Accidentally, I caught sight of a box of colour pencils on the floor. I didn't know whose it was, but I picked it up and kept it as my own.
The next day, our head teacher asked me about the pencils but I lied to him. He didn't say anything but treated me as usual. Afterwards, my classmates still played with me. As time went by, I felt sorry for what I did. In the end, I told my head teacher the truth. He didn't scold me but comfort me. It was his trust that made me face my mistakes bravely. In fact, he taught me a good lesson though he didn't say a single word.
I hope my story can help the newcomers a lot.
Yours,

Long long ago a man went to India and he had never been there before. When he got there, he saw a lot of fruit, but much of it was expensive because they couldn’t grow much because there was little water. Finally he saw a big basket of some very red and long fruit. And it was the cheapest in the shop.
So he went up and asked, “How much each kilo?” and the shopkeeper said, “Two rupees(卢比).” Two rupees in India was nothing. So he bought a whole kilogram of the fruit and started eating it. But after he ate some of it: Oh, my god! His eyes watered, his mouth watered and burnt, and his face became red. He jumped up and down, saying, “Ah! Ah! Ah!”
But he still continued to eat the fruit! Some people who were looking at him shook their heads and said, “You’re crazy, man. Those are chilies(辣椒)! You can’t eat so many! People use them as a condiment, but only a little bit to put into food for taste. You can’t just eat them like that.” But the silly man said, “No, I can’t stop! I paid money for them, and now I’ll eat thm up. It’s my money!”
And you think that man was silly, right? We sometimes do a lot of things like that. We spend money, time or effort doing something. And even though it’s been a long time, hard experience tells us it won’t work, and we know there’s no more hope, we still continue just because we’ve put money, time, effort and love into it. Just like the man who ate the chilies and felt so bad but couldn’t stop because he didn’t want to waste the money he’d paid.
So even if you’ve lost somethinng, let it go and move on. That’s better than continuing to lose.
1. The man chose to buy the red and long fruit only bacause _______.
A. he hadn’t eaten it before B. he was hungry
C. it was cheap D. he hadn’t seen it before
2. The underlined word probably means _______

3. Which of the following sentence is TRUE?
A. The man went to India to buy fruitB. The man didn’t want to waste moneyC. The man bought the fruit because it was expensive.D. India can grow a lot of fruit.
4. From the passage, we can learn that _______.
A. we shoudln’t waste money B. we shouldn’t eat chilies
C. we shouldn’t buy something cheapD. letting something go is better than keeping on losing
