We all cry for water when we are thirsty. But do you know, in very hot, dry weather, plants also make very low sounds as if they are crying for help?
You see, in a plant's stem there are several hundred "water pipes" that bring water from soil all the way up to the leaves. When the ground turns dry, it becomes harder and harder for plants to do this.
In very hot days, plants have to get any water that they can get.
Scientists Robot Winter has found out that when plants can get no water, their "water pipes" snap(发出声音). When that happens, the whole plant vibrates(颤动) a little.
Robot knows that healthy, well-watered plants are quiet. He also knows that dry plants are many insects' favorites and they often attack(袭击) them. How do the insects know which are healthy plants and which are not? Robot thinks that the insects may hear the plants "crying" and they may come to kill them.

Later the woman responsible(负责) for spreading the gossip learned that it was completely untrue. She was very sorry and went to a wise old man to find out what she could do to repair the harm.
“Go to the marketplace,” he said, “and buy a chicken, and have it killed, then on your way home, pluck(拔) its feathers and drop them one by one along the road.” Although surprised by this advice, the woman did what she was told.
The next day the wise man said, “Now, go and collect all those feathers you dropped yesterday and bring them back to me.”
The woman followed the same road, but she was so discouraged when she found the wind had blown all the feathers away. After searching for hours, she returned with only three in her hand.
“You see,” said the old man, “it's easy to drop them, but it's impossible to get them back. So it is with gossip. It doesn't take much to spread a gossip, but once you do, you can never completely undo the wrong.”

How do people pass on messages?
When you write a letter or make a telephone call, your words carry a message. People communicate with words. Do you think you can communicate without words? Tears(泪) in your eyes tell others that you are sad. 1 ? When you put up your hand in class, the teacher knows you want to say something or ask questions. You shake your head, and people know you are saying no. 2 ? Other things can also give some information. For example, a sign at the bus stop helps you to know which bus to take. A sign on the wall of your school helps you to find the library. 3 ? There are a lot of signs around you and you receive messages from them all the time.
People can communicate in many other ways. An artist can use his pictures to tell about beautiful mountains, about the blue sea and many other things. 4 ? They also tell about people and their ideas. Books, magazines, TV, radio and movies all help us to communicate with other people. They all help us to know what is going on in the world.
A. You nod (点头), and people know you are saying yes.
B. Books are written to tell you about all great things in the world.
C. A smile on your face shows you are happy and friendly.
D. Signs on doors tell you how to go in or out.
