Teaching objectives:
1. Students will be able to master the new words such as “flashlight”, “beat” and so on.
2. Students will be able to master some new phrases such as “fallen trees ”, “in a mess” and so on.
3. Students will be able to understand the general meaning of the passage by using different kinds of reading skills.
4. Students will have the awareness of helping each other as well as cooperation.
Teaching aid: PowerPoint
Teaching procedures:
Before reading
Step 1 Lead-in
1.Invite students to enjoy a video of storm.
What can you see in the video?
(设计意图:引入话题bad weather.)
2.Ask students to answer the question"Look at the title and picture, and predict(预测) what happened?"
(设计意图:引入关键词Storm.)
Step 2 Presentation
Use some pictures and a live video to help students understand the meanings of some key words and new phrases.

While reading
Step 1 Scan the passage and answer the question.
Where did the storm happen?
(Introduce the background information of the storm in the passage to the students ).
Step 2 Read the passage loudly and answer :
What do you think of the storm?
Lead to the topic sentence of the passage---THE STORM BROUGHT PEOPLE CLOSER TOGETHER.
Step 3 Careful reading
Read paragraph 1 carefully and complete the weather description.
The winds were very ____________ outside. Although it was in the day time, it felt like ____________. Because _______________ were making the sky very ______. The news reported that a heavy rainstorm was in the area.
Step 4 Discussion
Discuss and choose three things that one would need in case of a storm and tell the reasons.
(Learn more new words meantime with the help of the pictures:match(es),candle(s),flashlight(s))
Step 5 Oral reading
Students read paragraph 2 loudly and find out what people were doing before the storm.
Then check the answers.
Let the students pay attention to sentences using the past progressive tense.
Step 6 Careful reading
Students read para.3 carefully and answer :
What were Ben doing when the rain beat heavily against the windows?
What did Ben’s family do after dinner?
Step 7 Silent reading
Students read para.4 in silence and answer:
How was the neighborhood after the storm?
What did Ben’s family do?
Step 8 Read the whole passage aloud carefully and finish exercise 3b.

Retell what happened in this passage with the help of tips on the board.
Step 2 Free talk
Topic 1.What other disasters can bring people closer together?
Show a few pictures to help students to understand.
Then lead the students to come to the conclusion :Storms are not always bad.
They brought people closer together.
We should help each other in times of difficulty.
Topic2 Thinking:How can we help each other in times of difficulty? Let students share their opinions and get the awareness of helping each other in their daily life when they come across something difficult.
