When he came back in the evening, he was cornpletely shocked to see that the whole painting was filled with crosses. Now go to paint the same painting again and give it to me.”
Then they went to the same street the next morning and put the same painting exactly at the same place. Now the master took out another board which read, "Gentlemen, I have painted this piece . American English has many ways to talk about everything under the sun. “Cradle (摇篮)to grave(坟墓)” means a whole life process. A cradle is a bed for very young babies. And a grave is a burial place. So from cradle to grave means from birth to death. It could be used to describe something that happens over the course of a person’s life. For example, “I know a man who lived in the same country village his whole life -- from cradle to grave.” This expression is often used in business, meaning the whole life process of a product. Here is an example: "Marcia is responsible for the life of this product from beginning to end." "In other words, she’s in charge from cradle to grave." "Correct. Check with her before changing anything."
If you like food expressions, there is another way of saying cradle to grave, that is “soup to nuts”. A dinner may start with soup and end with nuts. For example, you could say, “He explained the process to us from soup to nuts ...
“Everything from A to Z” uses the letters to give an idea of everything. It describes content (内容)more than process. It means that nothing important was left out. For example, “The training covered everything from A to Z. The teacher taught everything you need to know.”
“Everything but the kitchen sink (水槽)” is an expression that means a person included a lot of things – maybe too many things. My friend is going camping for the weekend. And he packs too many things --- things he won’t possibly need, like a television. I could say, “He prepared for a weekend of camping and packed everything but the kitchen sink!”
31. When can you say “from cradle to grave”?

Many people know that rubbish is a big problem on planet Earth. What many people don't know is that junk has become a problem in outer space too.
According to BBC News, there are more than 22, 000 pieces of space junk floating(漂浮) around the earth. And these are just the things that we can see from the surface of the earth by telescopes (望远镜). There are also millions of smaller pieces of junk that we can't see.
Objects, like old space rockets or satellites(卫星), move around the planet at very high speeds that even a very small piece of the space junk can break important satellites or become dangerous to astronauts. When two objects in space crash, they break into many smaller pieces. It would increase the amount of space junk.
To reduce additional space junk, countries have agreed that all new space tools can only stay in space for 25 years at most. Each tool must be built to fall safely into the earth's atmosphere(大气层) after that time. In the upper parts of the atmosphere, it will burn up.
Many scientists also suggest different ways to clean up space junk. In England scientists are testing a metal net that can be fired into space junk. The net catches the junk and then pulls it into the earth's atmosphere to burn up. The Germans are building robots that can collect pieces of space junk and bring them back to Earth to be safely destroyed.
The problem is becoming more challenging because we're sending more objects into space to help people use their mobile phones and computers,” says Marco Castronuovo, an Italian space Researcher.“The time to act is now. The longer we leave the problem, the bigger it will become,” he says.
36. What does the underlined word “these” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Telescopes. B. Satellites.
C. Pieces of space junk. D. BBC news reports.
37. Why is space junk considered a problem?
A. It burns up after it re-enters the atmosphere
B. It often stops the view of telescopes on Earth
C. It could force new space tools to travel at slower speeds
D. It may break important satellites or become dangerous to astronauts.
38. Countries want future space tools to be able to fall back into the earth's atmosphere so that .
A. the tools can be reused later
B. the tools don't become space junk
C. the earth’s atmosphere can stay clean
D. the effects of space flight can be studied
39. How do the Germans plan to deal with space junk?
A. Catch it with nets.
B. Use robots to collect it.
C. Burn it in the earth's atmosphere.
D. Send it further away from the earth.
40. In which section of the newspaper would you probably read this article?
A. Environment. B. Local News.

There used to be many kinds of birds living in the United States, but now there are fewer of them than before. One of the leading reasons is the growing number of pet cats. By keeping your pet cats in your home, you can help give birds a better possible chance to live.
Of the 90 million pet cats in this country, about two—thirds are allowed to go outside. It is said that these cats kill hundreds of birds each year, as well as millions of small animals such as rabbits and field mice.
They can also bring illness to the animals that live in people’s yard(院子), further weakening the health of the natural populations.
Allowing pet cats to go outside is not just bad for birds and wildlife, it’s also bad for the cats themselves. Outdoor cats can get sick very easily. They are in danger from traffic and attacks(攻击)from other animals. In fact, outdoor cats usually don’t live past the age of five, while indoor cats often live to be 17 or older.
Keep your pet cat inside! If you raise a young cat, you should let it play inside.
