Oct. 16 is World Food Day. The UN started the day in 1979. It reminds people not to waste food and fight hunger.
A number of people in the world still don’t have enough food to eat. The food shortage(短缺) is a big problem all over the world. Now, there are more than 1000 million hungry people in the world according to the UN. Many children go to sleep hungry, and 15 million of them die of hunger each year.
There are several reasons for food shortage. First, there are more natural disasters. Also, a growing population(人口) makes feeding everyone more difficult.
Another big reason is food waste. Most people don’t realize how much food they throw away every day. The average(平均的) person throws away 50kg of food every year. According to the UN, more than one third of all food goes to waste each year.
Over 1,300 billion kilograms of food is wasted each year. The food wasted in Europe can feed 200 million people, while in Latin America 300 million a year.
So think twice before you throw away food. You’d better order as much food as you can eat at a restaurant. If you can’t eat all, take the rest home. Some food may not taste great, but your body needs it. Keep an eye on what food you have at home. Don’t buy too much. Don’t cook too much.
When you throw away food, you are not just wasting the food itself. Resources(资源), such as energy, time and water, are also wasted while growing and cooking. So everyone should know that it is important to save food. Saving food is saving ourselves.

Many Chinese who travel to the US find that though they have studied English for years, they have to “re-learn” it when they arrive.
Words that we learned in English classes are not pronounced the same way here. To truly be part of the “melting pot”, fluency(流利)in English is not enough. You need an accent(口音) to stand out.
When I first came to the US for graduate school, 1 was a nervous foreigner.I felt so out of place that I wanted to hide everything about me that was “different”. To talk like an American became one of my goals.
During my stay as a teaching assistant(TA), my students complained(抱怨) they could not understand me. I learned later from a study that this complaint was common among US students with an international TA. It is called the “Oh, no!” syndrome (情绪、举动), “Oh, no! Not another international TA, and not that accent again!’’
So I imitated(模仿) the way native speakers talk over time, I made great progress that American friends started to think highly of my English as having “almost no accent’’. I took this as a sign of my success. Ever since, people have often thought of me as someone from many places: the Midwest, the West Coast, China, Japan, South Korea. Most often, people think I am from California.
Suddenly, conformity (一致) was no longer a praise(表扬): If I talk like an American,am I still Chinese? If I lose my Chinese accent,do I also lose my cultural identity(身份)? Am I denying(否认)my past by being lost in a new culture?
Now I realize that a person’s accent is a ever-lasting record of their past cultural experience and it is a mark of one’s experience.
As a fourth-year student in the US, I am no longer a nervous foreigner. My nervousness has been replaced by a wish to hold on to my cultural origins. Now I add some Chinese “accent” on purpose when I speak.I do not wish to speak “perfect” English because I am proud of who I am.

Even the bear, because of his socks, slipped from the river rock and almost killed himself.
When the animals came to see the doctor, he gave them all the same advice, “Take off those clothes before one day they’re going to kill you.” Those who listened to the doctor’s advice stopped having accidents.
