Hanukkah
Hanukkah (光明节) is a Jewish festival. It is celebrated on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev (犹太教历), which is usually sometime in December. It is often called the festival of lights. The festival celebrates the time, over 2,000 years ago, when the Jewish people fought against an emperor who would not let them follow their own traditions and religion. When the Jewish people won back their temple in Jerusalem, they found there was only enough holy oil to keep the sacred light burning for one day. However, to their surprise, this small amount of oil kept the light burning for eight days and nights, until the people had time to make more oil.
At the center of the Hanukkah celebrations is a candlestick (called a Menorah) that holds nine candles. On the first night of Hanukkah the first candle is lit, and each day this candle is used to light another candle, until on the eighth day, the last day, all the candles are lit. During Hanukkah, people go to the synagogue (犹太教堂) to pray and to remember the miracle (奇迹) of the holy oil. Hanukkah is a time for family and friends to come together. People exchange gifts and greeting cards, and children go to parties. Parents often give their children money at Hanukkah. Potato cakes, called latkes, are a traditional Hanukkah food.
4. For how many days does Hanukkah last?

5. According to the passage, what is necessary when celebrating Hanukkah nowadays?

China’s Singles Day, which falls on Nov. 11th every year, has far surpassed its U. S. counterparts of Black Friday and Cyber Monday——combined Last year, Americans spent a record $ 12.8 billion online between Thanksgiving Day and Cyber Monday. It’s impressive until you compare it to the $ 17.6 billion in sales made by Chinese consumers in a single 24-hour period during 2016’s Singles Day.
Singles Day is known as “Bare Sticks Day” or “Bare Branches Day” in Chinese ——because the date “11/11” looks like bare branches and “one” is the loneliest number. Singles Day began in the early 1990s in the dorm rooms of Nanjing University when a group of single friends were sorry about the lack of significant others and decided to mark the day by organizing activities as a group of singles and reducing their loneliness by buying themselves a gift.
Then in 2009, sensing a break between the sales period of China’s National Day on Oct. 1st and Chinese New Year in late January or early February, Alibaba’s Jack Ma saw an opening: sell to comfort lonely hearts.
The first year did only $7.5 million in sales, but just 8 years later, shoppers spent $ 25.3 billion, or 168.2 billion yuan, this year——a 40 percent jump from last year’s $ 17.6 billion. For comparison, Black Friday and Cyber Monday in the U. S. only netted $ 6.79 billion in 2016. Amazon doesn’t release sales figures for July’s Prime Day, but it’s pretty safe to believe the not-quite-national-holiday doesn’t come close to $ 25 billion.
“More than $ 25 billion in one day is not just a sales figure,” Alibaba Group CEO Daniel Zhang said in a statement. “It represents the desire for quality consumption of the Chinese consumer, and it reflects how merchants and consumers alike have now fully accepted the combination of online and offline sales.”
4. What does the underlined word “others” refer to in Paragraph 2?
A. Roommates. B. Good friends.
C. Boyfriends or girlfriends. D. Relatives.
5. What is the original purpose of China’s Singles Day?
A. To promote the online sale of goods.
B. To reduce loneliness of singles in China.
C. To create a holiday for all Chinese youth.
D. To find boyfriends or girlfriends for singles.
6. China’s Singles Day became consumers’ day in .
A. the early 1990s B. 2016
C. 2017 D. 2009
7. Which of the following words can describe Daniel Zhang’s attitude to online sales?
A. Optimistic. B. Indifferent.
C. Worried. D. Confused.

3D printing is becoming more and more popular. We are now able to create things we need very quickly and easily using 3D printers. But can you imagine printing food?
Some scientists are trying to revolutionize the dining experience by doing this. They hope that having a 3D printer in the kitchen will be as common as the microwave oven or blender.
Scientists say that it’ll be quite easy: you simply have to select a recipe and put the raw food ‘inks’ into the printer. You can also modify the instructions to make the food exactly how you want it. This means that it would be very quick and easy to create tasty and nutritious meals.
Using 3D printers to create your meals would also be saving the environment. There would be less need for traditional growing, transporting and packaging processes as food production would be a lot more efficient. For example, alternative ingredients(原料) such as proteins from algae, beetroot leaves and insects could be converted into tasty products.
Printing food could also help people who suffer from dysphasia (a swallowing disorder). They could program the printer to print softer versions of their favorite foods so that they would not have trouble in swallowing them.
However, some people think that a future of 3D food printing would be a disaster. It could take away many jobs, including those from growing, transporting and packaging food. Imagine a world where there was no need for farming or growing crops and the same tastes could be printed from a raw “food ink”. Likewise, traditional cafes and restaurants might lose business. Also, there are concerns about the nutritional value of printed food: is it really possible to be get the nutrients we need from food——based inks and gels(凝胶)?
What’s more, cooking and eating together with family and friends has long been a traditional and enjoyable activity. It is hard to imagine a world where the pleasure of cooking is dead and meals can be created at the touch of a button.

If a woman has an extra piece of cake, don’t blame it on greed, blame it on her brain.
Scientists have found that women’s brains react to food very differently——and much more strongly——than men’s. Academics found that decades of dieting pressure on women and advertising have programmed certain parts of the female brain to react strongly when faced with any kind of food. Men, on the other hand, are not usually as obsessive (着迷的) about what they eat.
Dr. Rudolf Uher and his colleagues at the Institute of Psychiatry in King’s College London used brain scanning technology, known as functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI), to look at the brains of eighteen men and women.
The volunteers were given images of food to look at, as well as food to taste. Their brain reactions were observed by the scientists.
They found that the female brains reacted much more strongly than those of males.
The same reaction did not happen when they were shown non-food images. The team believe this means women think more about food than men tend to do.
Dr. Uher said, “This could be related to biological differences between men and women. But the more likely explanation is that women have a more complicated reaction to food because of social pressure.
Professor Carey Cooper, psychology and health professor at Lancaster University, said, “For centuries women have had a providing role——preparing and cooking food for their families. And it is part of that rule to make sure the food is safe. They will therefore be much more sensitive to food than men are, and I would not be surprised if that was now built into their DNA. If the female brain reacts to food because it historically has developed neural (神经的) pathways to do this, then food will be the way they express their stress. Food actually, is a comfort for women.”
But other experts have said that more research must be done before the results can be proved. American scientist Angelo del Parigi of the John B. Pierce Laboratory in New Haven, Connecticut, said, “Looking at an FMRI alone cannot make sure whether the stronger reaction in women is due to innate (天生的) differences or a learned process.”
5. Dr. Uher and his colleagues carried out the research by comparing _______.
A. FMRI’s effectiveness on women and men
B. volunteers’ reaction to different kinds of food
C. volunteers’ reaction to food before and after meals
D. women’s and men’s reaction to different images
6. In Dr. Uher’s opinion, women react more strongly to food than men most probably because they are _______.
A. told to do so for a long time
B. influenced by advertisements
C. forced by powerful social influences
D. born to do so due to biological reasons
7. According to Professor Carey Cooper, women _______.
A. turn to food when they feel sad
B. are stressed because of food safety
C. accept their social role from the heart
D. are satisfied with preparing food for their families
8. What was Angelo del Parigi’s attitude towards the research results?
A. Surprised. B. Uninterested.
C. Doubtful. D. Curious.

第一部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分24分)
第一节(共7小题;每小题2分,满分14分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
There’s no doubt that water is vital to any life. About 60 percent of the average adult human body is made of water. This includes most of your brain, heart, lungs, muscles and skin, and even about 30 percent of your bones. Yet there’s little scientific agreement about the exact amount of the stuff an individual should consume each day. So how much water do you actually need to drink to be healthy?
You may have heard that you should drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. Yet, the downside of this rule, researchers say, is that drinking water by the glass is not the only way that humans take in it. The “8 × 8” rule essentially overlooks two big sources of daily water consumption. One such source is food. Everything you eat contains some water. Watermelons, for example, are more than 90 percent water by weight. Different diets naturally contain different amounts of waters, and the counts. The other key water sources are other beverages. Non-alcoholic drinks such as coffee, and tea, contain mostly water and all contribute to your hydration(水量).
So, between all the food, water and other fluids you consume in a day, how much water should you aim to take in?
The National Academics of Sciences suggests that woman consume a total of approximately 2.7 liters (91 ounces) of warm from all beverages and foods each day and men 3.7 liters (125 ounces). But these are just general guidelines.
The truth is, there is no magic standard for hydration——everyone’s need vary depending on their age, weight, level of physical activity, general health and even the climate they live in. The more water you lose, the more water you’ll need to replace with food and drink. If you are looking for concrete advice, though, the best place to look is within. Drink up when you’re thirsty.
1. How does the author support the underlined sentence in Para 1?
A. By providing facts.
B. By asking a question.
C. By making a comparison.
D. By putting forward suggestions.
2. According to the “8 × 8” rule, how much water should we take in a day?
A. 8 ounces B. 64 ounces
C. 91 ounces D. 125 ounces
3. What’s the disadvantage of the “8 × 8” rule?
A. The water from both food and other beverages is ignored.
B. It includes the amount of water from both food and beverages.
C. It does not take water from drinks into account.
D. It overlooks the fact that we take in 90% of the water from fruits.
4. What can we infer from the final suggestion?
A. A man doing tiring physical work drunks less than 3.7 liters a week.
B. A person in good health drinks whenever he feels thirsty.
C. An overweight male in a hot summer drinks 125 ounces every two days.
D. A female eating a lot of watermelons drinks more than 91 ounces daily.

Should We Order Take-out Foods at School?
In recent years, take-out foods are very popular in China. Some people are used to having delicious foods delivered directly to their dinner table, without even leaving their home or office. This surely saves them much trouble, as they don’t have to spend time cooking a meal for themselves.
But as high school students, should we order take-out foods online at school?
Personally, I don’t think it right to do so. Firstly, it’s known to all that take-out foods are usually delivered in plastic containers. Countless plastic bags and boxes will cause white pollution to our school. Secondly, there can be health risks involved in the take-out foods.
Take-out foods must be banned from entering school, so that we can have a good environment.

第一节(共8小题;每小题2分,满分16分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Growing up in one of the poorest communities with most crimes in Los Angeles, US, being raised by a poorly-educated single mother and attending the worst-quality public school, not many people expected much of me, so I chose to expect something of myself.
On my 12th birthday, I bought a poster of Harvard University to hang in my room. Being at Harvard became my dream: I saw myself attending class in Sanders Theater, studying in Widener Library and eating in Annenberg Hall. Driven by this dream, I kept studying hard. I’d begin my day by asking myself these two questions: “What do I want in my life?” and “Are the things I am doing today going to get me closer to that life?”
Asking myself the questions gave me the courage to ask over 50 Harvard students for advice on my application essays; it gave me the energy to study just one more hour on my SATs when others were asleep; and it gave me the determination to apply for just one more scholarship when already refused many times. Moreover, reminding myself of my goal each day made it easy to say no to the same choices my friends made, because they would never get me closer to my goal. I found that even being poor could not take away my power to decide what I choose to do with my life.
Every day I could feel myself getting closer and closer to my goal as my writing got better, my SAT score increased, and my scholarship offers started coming in. On March 31st, 2011, an email arrived from Harvard. The first word was “Congratulations!”. Tears of joy filled my eyes.
Who you are today is the result of the decisions you made yesterday, and who you will be tomorrow will be the result of the choices you make today. Who do you want to be tomorrow?

Harry Potter lovers around the world may want to thank Alice Newton. She was eight years old when her father brought home a manuscript for her to read. At the time, she was working for Bloomsbury Publishing.
After reading the manuscript, Alice wrote a note to her father: "The excitement in this book made me feel warm inside," she wrote. "I think it is probably one of the best books an 8 or 9 year old could read."
Based in part on Alice’s comments, Bloomsbury went on to publish "Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone."
Alice’s note to her father is part of the British Library’s new exhibition, "Harry Potter: A History of Magic". It celebrates the 20th anniversary of the publication of J.K. Rowling’s first book about Harry and his friends at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
When "Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone" was released in 1997, Bloomsbury sent just 500 copies to stores in Britain and another 500 copies to British libraries.
Now, Harry and his friends are known worldwide.
The exhibit at the British Library in February includes Rowling’s outline for her books, her artwork of its characters and a map of the Hogwarts School. It also includes early versions of Rowling’s books that were rejected by other publishers.
The show has two rooms. They are divided up based on the subjects offered at Hogwarts. Areas include Potions, Her biology, Care of Magical Creatures and Defense Against the Dark Arts.
Each area describes the stories and beliefs that Rowling included in her books.
Included in the exhibition are discussions of alchemy, the European traditions that led to modern chemistry, and the Ripley Scroll——a six-meter-long document from the 1500s. It describes how to make a Philosopher’s Stone.
The British Library has already sold about 30,000 tickets to the exhibit——the most advance tickets ever sold for a British Library exhibition.
The show closes on February 28, 2018. It will then travel to New York for the 20th anniversary of the release of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone", the book’s title in the United States.

You’ve probably read the books. You’ve probably seen the movies. But have you heard the music? The latest Harry Potter news is that bands have been forming to play what is called “wizard rock” or sometimes just “wrock”.
The new kind of music began when Joe DeGeorge and his brother Paul decided that the characters from Harry Potter would make a great band. Ron on guitar, Hermione on bass, Hagrid on drums and Harry singing up front would make for an excellent group. In one day, the brothers wrote, practised and performed six songs about life at Hogwarts. After the first performance, Paul decided that “we’re Harry and the Potters.”
Wizard rock is pretty much what it sounds like: rock ‘n’ roll inspired by and set in the world of Harry Potter. The DeGeorges started a trend. Today, there are dozens of wizard-rock bands: the Whomping Willows, the Remus Lupins and the Moaning Myrtles to name a few. Rockers dress like Hogwarts students and play at conventions and festivals.
People who like Harry Potter think wizard rock music is totally awesome. The songs can be funny, but the music is not a joke. It’s serious. Just ask the DeGeorge brothers. They’ve played more than 500 shows in 49 states. They dress in Hogwarts house colors, and their hit songs are inspired by characters from the books: “Save Ginny Weasley” and “Voldemort Can’t Stop the Rock!” The themes of their music are the same as the themes of Rowling’s books: love and friendship, upset and struggle.
Wizard rock is just one more spin-off in the Harry Potter craze. Two years after J. K. Rowling published her last book in the series, Potter popularity continues to grow. There are Potter conventions and Potter clubs that try to get kids and grown-ups to help fight hunger, for example. And the fact that they may do it while humming “Wizard Chess” or “Platform 9” makes those meetings fun.
25. Which of the following is a band’s name?
A. Hermione. B. The Whomping Willows.
C. Harry Potter. D. Save Ginny Weasley.
26. Which of the following is wizard rock’s characteristic?
A. Funny and joking. B. Joking and serious.

B. People think highly of wizard rock.
C. The wizard rock’s themes are related to struggle.
D. Wizard rock is only popular among teenagers.
28. From the last paragraph, we can learn that ____________.
A. Harry Potter has had great effect on American’s music.
B. Wizard rock has created another hit about Harry Potter.
C. Harry Potter continues to be liked by its fans.
D. J. K. Rowling will continue to write something about Harry Potter.
四、七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
“A question brought me to the point of ending my life when I was fifty years old. My question was the simplest one that lies in every person. It is the question without which life is impossible: Why do I live? 29. Is there anything in my life that will not be destroyed by my death?”
These are the words of the famous Russian writer Leo Tolstoy. Many people ask these difficult questions. And they struggle to find meaning in their life. Tolstoy spent his whole life trying to answer difficult questions like these. 30.
In the 1850s, Leo Tolstoy wrote his first stories. He wrote about his experiences in the military. He also told stories about when he was a child. 31. He was finally successful. He earned respect from many wealthy and intelligent men, who talked a lot about faith and the meaning of life. But soon he found they were proud and they made very bad moral choices.
32. He opened a school for the children of people who worked on his land. They were very poor. He wanted to help them because he thought they were more honest than the wealthy people he knew.
Tolstoy learned many things from his workers. He respected how they worked hard to provide for their families. 33. So in 1862, Leo Tolstoy married a young woman named Sonya Behrs. The next 15 years were the best years of Tolstoy's life. It was during this time that he wrote his most famous books——War and Peace and Anna Karenina. They communicate what he thought was the answer to all his questions——humans were supposed to live a simple life and take care of their families.
A. These works were published and Tolstoy became a well-known writer.
B. How can I realize my dream if I have one?
C. Why do I wish for anything, or do anything?
D. He gained a lot of inspirations which had great influence on his following actions.
E. His search for answers influenced his writing.
F. So in the 1860s, Tolstoy tried a different way to find the meaning of life.
G. He began to believe that marriage and family would give his life meaning.

A
“Unless we spend money to spot and prevent asteroids(小行星) now, one might crash into Earth and destroy life as we know it”, say some scientists.
Asteroids are bigger versions of the meteoroids(流星) that race across the night sky. Most orbit the sun far from Earth and don’t threaten us. But there are also thousands of asteroids whose orbits put them on a collision course with Earth.
Buy $50 million worth of new telescopes right now. Then spend $10 million a year for the next 25 years to locate most of the space rocks. “By the time we spot a fatal one,” the scientists say, “we’ll have a way to change its course.”
Some scientists favor pushing asteroids off course with nuclear weapons. But the cost wouldn’t be cheap.
Is it worth it? Two things experts consider when judging any risk are: 1) How likely the event is; 2) How bad the consequences if the event occurs. Experts think an asteroid big enough to destroy lots of life might strike Earth once every 500,000 years. Sounds pretty rare——but if one did fall, it would be the end of the world. “If we don’t take care of these big asteroids, they’ll take care of us,” says one scientist. “It’s that simple.”
The cure, though, might be worse than the disease. Do we really want fleets of nuclear weapons sitting around on Earth? “The world has less to fear from doomsday(毁灭性的) rocks than from a great nuclear fleet set against them,” said a New York Times article.
21. What does the passage say about asteroids and meteoroids?
A. They are heavenly bodies different in composition.
B. They are heavenly bodies similar in nature.
C. These are more asteroids than meteoroids.
D. Asteroids are more mysterious than meteoroids.
22. What do scientists say about the collision of an asteroid with Earth?
A. It is unlikely but the danger exists.
B. Such a collision might occur once every 225 years.
C. Collision of smaller asteroids with Earth occur more often than expected.
D. It’s still too early to say whether such a collision might occur.
23. What do people think of the suggestion of using nuclear weapons to alter the course of asteroids?
A. It sounds practical but it may not solve the problem.
B. It may create more problems than it might solve.
C. It is a waste of money because a collision of asteroids with Earth is very unlikely.
D. Further research should be done before it is proved applicable.
24. We can conclude from the passage that ________.
A. while pushing asteroids off course nuclear weapons would destroy the world
B. asteroids racing across the night sky are likely to hit Earth in the near future
C. the worry about asteroids can be left to future generations since it is unlikely to happen in our lifetime
D. workable solutions still have to be found to prevent a collision of asteroids with Earth

The journey to the moon had been the first step toward future exploration(探险) in space. The distance between the Moon and Earth is very short indeed when compared with the distances between Earth and the other planets. Mars, the nearest planet to Earth is millions of miles away. Traveling to the planets will be man’s next aim. Such travels will be more challenging than the trip to the moon and certainly more adventurous.
Recently, two American spaceships, Vikings 1 and 2, landed on Mars trying to discover whether that planet has any life on it. So far the signs of life on Mars has neither confirmed(确认) nor ruled out. 三、阅读理解(共7小题;每小题2分,满分14分)
A
The earth is the only planet that scientists think has life. Why does the earth have life while the other planets don't?For one thing, the earth is just the right temperature. As the third planet from the sun,the earth seems to be just the right distance away. The planets which are closer to the sun are so hot that their surfaces bake(烘烤)in the sun. The farthest planets are cold balls.
When the earth developed——which scientists believe may have happened about 4 billion years ago——many gases covered the earth. The gases caused the earth to be hot. But something wonderful happened. The temperature was just right for thick clouds to form. It rained very hard for a very long time. This gave the earth its oceans. Water made it possible for plants to grow. The plants created oxygen in the atmosphere. Oxygen is the gas that humans and animals breathe.
Only one other planet in the solar system seems to be something like the earth. That planet is Mars (火星). Mars is smaller than the earth, and it is quite a bit cooler. But it is not too cold for humans. On some days, the temperatures are as low as a winter day in the northern United States. If you wore a special spacesuit, you could walk around on Mars. You would have to bring your own air to breathe, because the air on Mars is too thin to breathe.
Mars has the largest volcano(火山) in the solar system. It is sixteen miles high. The highest volcano on the earth is five miles high. The most unexpected(未预料到的) sight on Mars is dried-up river beds. Scientists believe that Mars was once much better than it is now. Does this mean there could have been living things on Mars?Scientists are not sure, but there has been no sign so far.
21. Which of the following is NOT the reason that the earth has life?
A. The earth is just the right temperature.
B. The volcanoes on the earth are lower than those on Mars.
C. There is oxygen in the atmosphere of the earth.
D. The earth seems to be just the right distance away from the sun.
22. The underlined phrase “the third planet” in the first paragraph refers to_______.
A. the Sun B. the Moon
C. the Earth D. the Mars
23. Which of the following about the Mars is NOT true?
A. There could have been living things on Mars.
B. Mars has the largest volcano in the solar system.
C. There is almost no oxygen in the air on Mars.
D. Mars is smaller than the earth, and it is quite a bit cooler.

Damage to Ozone layer Gets Worse
In the middle of winter, when snow is falling in many parts of the United States, scientists have sounded a warning to people who plan to spend many hours in the sun this summer. The warning is: The sun’s summertime rays are more dangerous than once thought.
A team of scientists from 80 nations recently reported to the United Nations that a layer of ozone (臭氧层) in the atmosphere, which protects humans from harmful levels of ultraviolet(紫外线) radiation, will be thinner over the United States this summer. The thinner layer allows more ultraviolet rays from the sun to reach Earth. The extra amount of ultraviolet radiation could cause an increase in the number of cases of skin cancer.
Scientists first became concerned about the ozone layer in the mid-1980s when a hole was discovered in the layer above Antarctica during the winter. The hole was caused by chemicals used in refrigerators and air conditioners. When these chemicals are sent out into the atmosphere, they produce gases that destroy the ozone.
Concern about the protective ozone layer rose more recently when data(数据) from satellites and ground stations showed that ozone levels were dropping over areas other than Antarctica. Low ozone levels were recorded in the spring and summer over the United States and over other populated areas in the world.
Although many countries have already begun stopping the use of ozone destroying chemicals, the new findings are expected to advance the timetable for a total ban(禁止) of the chemicals.
24. The scientists have observed the ozone layer ________.
A. since 1980 B. since last winter
C. for more than 20 years D. for about one year
25. The ozone layer in the atmosphere can ________.
A. do a lot of good to human beings in many ways.
B. protect humans from diseases caused by bad weather.
C. do a lot of harm to human beings in the summer-time.
D. protect humans from harmful levels of ultraviolet radiation.
26. Scientists first found that there was a hole in the ozone layer ________.
A. above Arctic during the winter in the mid-1980s
B. above Antarctica during the winter in the mid-1980s
C. over somewhere in the north of the equator in 1980
D. over the U.S.A in the summertime in the mid-1980s
27. The damage to the ozone layer was caused by ________.
A. the changeable weather
B. ozone-destroying chemicals
C. chemicals from refrigerators
D. chemicals from air conditioners
四、课文语法填空(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
No one knows ___28__ (exact) how the earth began, as it ___29__ (happen) so long ago. However, according to a widely __30__ (accept) theory, the universe began with a “Big Bang” that threw matter in all ___31__ (direction). After that, atoms began to form and combine to create stars and other bodies.
For several billion years after the “Big Bang”, the earth was still just a cloud of dust. What it was to become was uncertain until between 4.5 and 3.8 billion years ago when the dust settled into __32__ solid globe. The earth became so violent that it was not clear __33__ the shape would last or not. It exploded loudly with fire and rock. They were in time __34___ (produce) carbon, nitrogen, water vapour and other gases, which were to make the earth’s atmosphere. ___35_ is even more important is that as the earth cooled down, water began to appear on its surface.
What many scientists believe is that the continued presence of water allowed the earth to dissolve __36__ (harm) gases and acids into the oceans and seas. This produced a chain reaction, which made __37__ possible for life to develop.

Driving in Canada is similar to driving in many parts of the United States. Distances and speeds, however, are posted in kilometers per hour and some signs, particularly in Quebec, may only be in French.
Unless otherwise posted, the maximum (最大限度的) speed limit in Canada is 50km/hr in cities and 80km/hr on highways. On rural highways, the posted speed limit may be 100km/hr. It is illegal to take automobile radar detectors (汽车雷达检测器) into Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, and the Yukon. Seat belt use is required by law for all passengers, and child car seats must be used by children under 40 pounds. Some provinces require drivers to keep their vehicles’ headlights on during the day and some have banned (禁止) driving while using a hand-held cell phone. Motorcycles cannot share a lane (车道), and safety helmets for motorcycle riders and passengers are necessary. Running a red light is a serious crime throughout Canada and drivers are advised to stop before starting when a light turns green.
Winter travel can be dangerous due to heavy snowfalls and icy conditions. Some roads and bridges are often closed in winter. Snow tires are required in some provinces. Travelers should also be careful about animals while driving at night in rural areas.
Highway 401, from Detroit to Montreal, is one of the busiest highways in North America. It has been the scene of many deadly traffic accidents due to sudden and severe weather changes, high rates of speed, and heavy truck traffic. Thus drivers should be alert while travelling here.
Please refer to our Road Safety page for more information. Also, we suggest that you visit the website of Canada’s national authority responsible for road safety.
21. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A. All signs on the roads in Quebec are in English.

D. The speed of cars in Canadian cities should be less than 50km/hr.
22. The underlined word “alert” in Paragraph 4 could best be replaced by _____.
A. careful B. relaxed
C. nervous D. pleased
23. What is the best title for the text?

C. Special rules for driving in Canada
D. Traffic safety and road conditions in Canada
B
“How far is the next village?” the American asks a man standing by the edge of the road. In some countries, because the man realizes that the traveler is tired and eager to reach his destination (目的地), he will politely say “Just down the road.” He thinks this is more encouraging, gentler, and therefore the wanted answer. So the American drives through the night, getting more and more angry, feeling “being tricked”. He thinks the man on purpose lied to him, for obviously he must have known the distance quite well.
Had conditions been reversed (颠倒过来), the American would have felt he was “cheating” the driver if he had said the next town was not too far, and if he would be sorry to the weary driver, he would say, “You have a good way to go yet, it is at least fifteen miles.” The driver might be disappointed, but he would know what to expect.
Whether to be accurate or polite leads to many misunderstandings between people of different cultures. If you know the situation in advance, it is sometimes easier to recognize the problem.

B. say that he doesn’t know but he will encourage you to go on
C. decide whether you are tired or not, and then tell you
D. tell you politely it is close though he knows it isn’t
27. The short passage advises us to ________.
A. learn some customs of America
B. tell the truth to Americans more than to the people from other countries
C. be polite to those who understand you well
