Maria (1718-1799) was a famous Italian mathematician. She was described in a book as follows: “Maria was a child prodigy(神童), but was also shy. ”
She stayed at home, teaching the younger children and following her own studies. When her mother died after giving birth to twenty-one children, Maria took over the running of the household. At the age of twenty she started a ten-year project, a book bringing together the work on calculus (微积分) of Leibnitz and Newton titled Analytic Institutions. Sometimes she would have trouble with a problem, but her mind went on working even in her sleep; she would sleepwalk to her study and back to bed. In the morning, she would find the answer to the problem waiting on her desk. Her book made her famous; she was living proof of what she had argued at nine years old that women had a right to study science. But Maria had other interests in her life apart from mathematics. She had always worked with the poor people in her area, and she had asked her father for separate rooms and turned them into a private hospital. She worked at the hospital (and another) until she died at the age of eighty-one. Maria wrote an important book on mathematics, as well as another unpublished book. She ran a household of over twenty people, and she worked for people who had not had her luck and opportunities. Each one of these things was remarkable, but she did them all.

Audrey Hepburn won an Academy Award as Best Actress for her first major American movie, Roman Holiday, which was released in 1953.But she is remembered as much for her aid work as for her acting.
Born in Belgium in 1929,Audrey’s father was British and her mother was Dutch. Audrey was sent to live at a British school for part of her childhood. During World War II,she lived and studied in the Netherlands. Her mother thought it would be safe from German attacks. Audrey studied dance as a teenager and during college when she returned to London after the war. But she realized she wasn’t going to be a ballerina (芭蕾舞女演员). So she began taking acting parts in stage shows. Later she began to get small parts in movies.
But it was Audrey Hepburn’s move to America that brought her true fame. In 1951 she played the character “Gigi” in the Broadway play of the same name to great critical praise. Two years later,Roman Holiday made her a star at the age of 24.
Audrey made more than 25movies.Among her most popular roles was Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tifany’s in 1961.Three years later she played Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady.
She was married two times and had one son by each husband. In 1989,the UN Children’s Fund named Audrey a goodwill ambassador. She travelled all over the world in support of UNICEF (联合国儿童基金会) projects. The UN agency said she was a tireless worker. She often gave 15 interviews a day to gain money and support for UNICEF projects.
Audrey Hepburn often said her loyalty to UNICEF was the result of her experiences as a child during World War II. She said she knew what it was like to be starving and to be saved by international aid. She was a goodwill ambassador until her death in 1993 from colon cancer.

In the 1940s, Lena Horne was the first African-American in Hollywood to sign a long term contract with a major movie studio. Her deal with MGM stated that she would never play the role of a servant. During this period, African-American actors were mostly limited to playing servants or African natives.
But this refusal also limited her movie career. Horne was generally only offered the role of a nightclub singer. Her characters did not interact with white characters in these movies. This way, her part could be cut from the version of the movie that played in Southern States.
Lena Horne later wrote that the movie producers did not make her into a servant, but they did not make her into anything else, either. Lena Horne once said that World WarⅡhelped make her a star. She was popular with both black and white servicemen. She sang on army radio programs and traveled to perform for the troops. During one event, she noted that German prisoners of war were permitted to sit closer to the stage than black soldiers. These experiences led to Lena Horne’s work in the civil rights movement.
She protested racial separation at the hotels where she performed. She took action so that she and her musicians would be permitted to stay in those hotels. Black musicians at the time generally stayed in black neighborhoods. Lena Horne also sang at civil rights gatherings. She took part in the March on Washington protest in 1963. It was during this event that Martin Luther King Junior gave his “I Have a Dream” speech.

People can’t survive without food. Long ago, early people couldn’t grow crops, so they had to live by hunting animals and gathering grains. After a tribe(部落) had lived in an area for some time, its food supply would begin to reduce. Then the tribe had to move to new hunting grounds where there was more food.
This way of life caused special problems for the tribes. They were forced to depend on luck, as well as on their hunting skills. If they could find no game, the whole tribe would be in danger of starving. And when the hunters had good luck one day, they were not sure to find game the next time. The tribes moved often because much land was needed to support their people.
As time passed by, people learned that they could grow their food. At first, the women of tribes collected patches of wild grain. Later, people discovered that they could plant their own seeds. Farming slowly became a way of life.
As people turned away from hunting to farming, their life changed. When the food supply became richer and richer, they no longer moved from place to place. The success of their crops depended partly on the weather, but there were also things they could do to help crops grow.
In the past, a tribe had to travel many miles for food. Now, only a small amount of land was necessary to feed the whole tribe. The early tribe could grow in size because farming provided a way to feed people.
21. Why did the early tribes move so often?
A. They enjoyed traveling around.
B. They had to find enough food.
C. Because of the bad weather they did not like to stay in one place.
D. They liked to go hunting everywhere.
22. The underlined word “game” in Paragraph 2 probably means “______”.
A. 游戏 B. 比赛 C. 野味 D. 赌博
23. When farming provided enough food to people, ___________.
A. the women didn’t do any work at all
B. the tribe could grow larger and life became steady
C. they did not move at all
D. they no longer went hunting
24. From the passage we can infer that___________.
A. early tribes liked moving from place to place
B. hunting was interesting in early days
C. the change from hunting to farming happened very quickly
D. life was hard and unsteady for early tribes

Land Art, sometimes referred to as Earth Art or Earthworks, is a form of art which involves using physical landscapes to create art, taking art out of the museum and into the outside world. Modern Land Art movement really got going in the 1960s, when American artists began creating Land Art on a large scale. Today, works of modern Land Art can be seen all over the world, sometimes right alongside much older pieces of Land Art created by people who lived thousands of years ago.
Land Art, which is not necessarily unchangeable, can take a number of forms. For example, in 1970 Robert Smithson created the Spiral Jetty(螺旋状防波堤), made of a collection of stones and mud, in the Great Salt Lake. The American artist made a large jetty in a spiral shape which sticks out into the waters of the lake.
Reshaping the landscape is a common characteristic of Land Art, which can be created by moving parts around. People can also add things to the environment to create Land Art, like salt, which is added to the Spiral Jetty. It is possible to use plants. In all cases, Land Art is immovable.
Land Art is designed to gradually form, change, and eventually decay(衰落). That’s one of the biggest differences between Land Art and most of the art one sees in the museums. Some works of art can exist only for a few hours or days. Others are exposed to rain and wind so that they develop and decay over time, which is part of the attractiveness in the eyes of the artists.
25. What can be learned from the first paragraph?
A. Land Art was the most popular art in the 1960s.
B. Land Art aims to get people interested in nature.
C. American artists were the first to create Land Art.
D. People have been creating Land Art for thousands of years.
26. What do we know about Robert Smithson?
A. He is a great creative artist.
B. He lives near the Great Salt Lake.
C. He made the most famous Land Art.
D. He was a pioneer in creating Land Art.
27. One of the unique characteristics of Land Art lies in________.
A. it shows the extreme beauty of nature
B. it develops and decays gradually over time
C. it combines the landscapes around completely
D. it offers the artists a chance to get close to nature
28. What may be the best title for the text?
A. Works of Land Art B. History of Land Art

“Food in France is still primarily about pleasure,” says Mark Singer, technical director of cuisine at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. “Cooking and eating are both pastimes(消遣) and pleasure. ”The French might start their day with bread, butter, jam, and perhaps something hot to drink——it’s a time of the day when the whole family can be united. Singer, born in Philadelphia, has lived in France for more than 40 years.
“Although things have changed greatly in the past 20 years when it comes to food in the country, ”he says, “and what was a big affair with eating has been slowly softened up, there are still events in the year, like birthdays and New Year’s Eve and Christmas Eve that are still really anchored in traditional food and cooking. But it’s not every day. ”
Some people think French food life may be a performance, adds Jennifer Berg, director of graduate food studies at New York University. “They want to believe that France is this nation where people are spending five hours a day going to 12 different markets to get their food. The reality is most croissants(羊角面包)are factory-made, and most people are buying convenience food, except for the very small group of people in high society. But part of our identity relies on believing that myth. ”
In Italy, as in France, takeout is still relatively rare. “Eating fast is not at all part of our culture,” says Marco Bolasco, editorial director of Slow Food and an Italian food expert. “Our meals are relaxed, even during a lunch break. Food in Italy is love, nutrition and pleasure,” he says. An Italian child’s first experience with food is not small round cakes or rice or eggs, but probably ice cream, notes Bolasco. Status and wealth play less of a role in food.
11. How have things about French food changed?
A. People prefer to cook at home.
B. More people choose to eat out.
C. Traditional food is less frequently cooked.
D. People eat faster than before.
12. What does the underlined word “performance” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. A bother. B. A play.
C. A hobby. D. A routine.
13. Why is Italian food compared with French food in the last paragraph?
A. To show the advantages of Italian food.
B. To prove the differences between them.
C. To reflect the customs of Italian food.
D. To indicate the common points of the two.
14. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Food as identity. B. Food as pleasure.
C. Food as survival. D. Food as status.

LONDON (Reuters)——Organic fruit, delivered right to the doorstep. That is what Gabriel Gold prefers, and he is willing to pay for it. If this is not possible, the 26-year-old computer technician will spend the extra money at the supermarket buying organic food.
“Organic product is always better,” Gold said. “The food is free of pesticides(杀虫剂), and you are generally supporting family farms instead of large farms. And more often than not it is locally grown and seasonal, so it is tasty. ”Gold is one of the growing number of shoppers buying into the organic trend, and supermarkets across Britain are counting on more like him as they grow their organic food business. But how many shoppers really know what they are getting, and why are they willing to pay a higher price for organic product? Market research shows that Gold and others who buy organic food can generally give clear reasons for their preferences——but their knowledge of organic food is far from complete. For example, small amounts of pesticides can be used on organic product. And about three quarters of organic food in Britain is not local but imported to meet growing demand. “The demand for organic food is increasing by about one third every year, so it is a very fast-growing market,” said Sue Flock, a specialist in this line of business.
15. More and more people in Britain are buying organic food because______.
A. they are getting richer
B. they can get the food anywhere
C. they consider the food free of pollution
D. they like home-grown fruit
16. Which of the following statements is TRUE about most organic product sold in Britain?

B. It is produced outside Britain.
C. It is grown on family farms.
D. It is produced on large farms.
17. What is the meaning of the underlined words “the organic trend” in the second paragraph?
A. Growing interest in organic food.
B. Better quality of organic food.
C. Rising market for organic food.
D. Higher prices of organic food.
18. What is the best title for this news story?
A. Organic food—healthy, or just for the wealthy?

When you are in another country, it is important to know the language, but it is equally important to know how to communicate nonverbally(不用语言地). Before saying anything, people communicate nonverbally by making gestures. According to an investigation(调查), only 30 to 35 percent of our communication is verbal. When people don’t know the language, the most common way to communicate is through gestures. However, many gestures have different meanings, or no meaning at all, in different parts of the world.
In the United States, for example, nodding your head up and down means “yes”. In some parts of Greece and Turkey, however, this motion can mean “no”. In southeast Asia, nodding your head is a polite way of saying “I’ve heard you”.
In ancient Rome, when the emperor wanted to spare someone’s life, he would put his thumb up. Today in the United States, when someone puts his/her thumb up, it means “Everything is all right.” However, in Sardinia and Greece, the gesture is insulting and should not be used there.
In the United States, raising your clasped(握紧的) hands above your head means “I’m the champion” or “I’m the winner”. It is the sign prizefighters make when they win a fight. When a leading Russian statesman(政治家) made his gesture after a White House meeting, Americans misunderstood and thought he meant he was a winner. In Russia, however, it is a sign of friendship.
There are other nonverbal signals that people should be aware of when they go to another country, such as the distance to maintain between speakers. Americans stand closer to each other than English people. English people don’t like touching somebody or being touched. Now in America, touch is important. Friends touch each other on the arm, for example. They often put an arm around a friend when they say “hello” or “goodbye”.
41. It is very important to know how to communicate nonverbally when you are in another country because______.
A. most people speak different languages
B. much of our communication is nonverbal on many occasions
C. people usually make gestures before saying anything
D. it’s easy to learn how to express oneself through gestures
42. If a native in Singapore nods his head up and down when you talk to him, his motion means“______”.
A. yes B. no
C. that’s all right D. I’ve heard you
43. When the Russian leader put up his clasped hands after the meeting at the White House______.
A. he meant Russia was the winner
B. he was insulting America
C. he made a show of friendship to America
D. he in fact meant nothing at all
44. The gesture of putting one’s thumb up shouldn’t be used when you are travelling in______.
A. Italy B. the United States
C. Greece D. Southeast Asia

There is an English saying, “Laughter is the best medicine.” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter can really improve people’s health.
Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.
Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effects of pain on the body. In one experiment, doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemicals in the brain which decrease both stress and pain.
As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.
45. We learn from the first paragraph that laughter______.
A. is good for one’s health
B. is related to some illness
C. has been investigated
D. has no effect on the body
46. Which of the following statements is NOT true of laughter according to the passage?

二、阅读理解 (共8小题;每小题2分,满分16分)
A
In America, each of the states likes to promote itself with a slogan (口号). I currently live in Utah, where the slogan is ‘“Life Elevated”. It’s a nod to outdoor entertainment in the hill country, including the ski industry. I previously lived in Colorado, a land with red dirt, great mountains and golden plains. The slogan there is ‘‘Colorful Colorado”. Years ago I lived in the “Peach State” of Georgia, and I grew up in New Mexico as a little boy, whose slogan is “Land of Enchantment (魔力)”.
We never seemed to get away from dust in New Mexico, so I appreciate the story of a newcomer to the Land of Enchantment who learned about dusty wind. She was visiting an antique shop and the owner wiped down every item before showing it. The newcomer said, “Everything gets dusty here pretty quickly, doesn’t it?” “That’s not dust, honey,” the shop owner replied, “That’s ENCHANTMENT”. That made the problem more acceptable or at least can be live with. An escalator (自动扶梯) broke, so he posted a sign to warn customers. He chose not to use the traditional “Out of Order” or “Do Not Use” warnings. Instead, his sign read, “This Escalator Is Temporarily a Stairway”. He turned a minus into humor and made it a plus.
And in fact there are sonic things, like the weather, we can’t change. All we can change is our ways that we think and feel about them. I believe one of the best techniques to do this is to find some humor in the situation. Finding something amusing or enjoyable of difficulty, a troublesome problem can be one of the most creative and effective things we can do. Sometimes the only sense you can make of a situation is a sense of humor.
11. How many places has the author lived in from the first paragraph?
A. 2. B. 3. C. 4. D. 5.
12. How would the newcomer probably feel after hearing what the shop owner said?
A. Angry. B. Relaxed. C. Curious. D. Nervous.
13. What’s the purpose of writing the text?
A. To encourage people to find the funny side in their daily life.
B. To show the effects of using slogans to raise the position.
C. To explain the skills of turning a disadvantage into humor.
D. To tell the strange experience of a bargain in an antique shop.
14. What dose the underlined word “it” in the Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Dust on items. B. The antique shop.
C. An item for sale. D. The Land of Enchantment.
B
Life doesn’t always turn out the way we’d like. When situations take an unfavorable turn, we become upset, frustrated, or angry. When others don’t agree with us, or act in a manner we find disturbing, anger is a typical response. With the exception of a few extreme circumstances an angry reaction rarely improves the situation or helps us change our mind. Thoughtful consideration of what feelings and reaction are most helpful actually restores our real power, so consider the following alternatives to anger.
Compassion, consisting of both understanding and empathy, can be a perfect solution to anger. Each person has a right to live life according to their beliefs, dreams, needs, etc. If someone is acting improperly or not living up to our ideals, we need to remove the “shoulds” and remind ourselves that it is a necessary part of their life’s journey. Choosing this alternative response softens one’s heart and prevents anger from arising.
Humor is another powerful tool for lessening anger. We take life and personal offense far too seriously. After all, their behavior is a reflection of their internal environment and has nothing at all to do with us and it is in reality relatively unimportant. Humor puts any serious situation into its proper places. It acts as a protective barrier to emotional pain as we recognize that what is happening has nothing at all to do with us.
So when others behave badly, forgive them for their bad behaviors rather than judge them in your heart. When life hands us the exact opposite of what we requested, make light of it. After all, this life is only temporary so why get so bent out of shape when it isn’t in line with your ideals? Rain on your wedding day? Break out the umbrellas and boots and dance in the puddles!
15. What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A. Anger makes a person more powerful.
B. All the people get annoyed easily.
C. Anger often does no good to the situation.
D. Anger can do something good in most cases.
16. How should we respond to others’ misbehavior according to the second paragraph?
A. Criticize it sharply. B. Complain about it.
C. Leave it as it is. D. Understand and accept it.
17. What does the underlined phrase mean in the last paragraph?
A. Dull. B. Angry.
C. Delighted. D. Gifted.
18. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Alternative Responses to Anger.
B. The Bad Effects of Anger.
C. The Causes of Frequent Anger.
D. The Risk of Getting Angry.

I am grateful to my English teacher Susan, at whose help I couldn’t have won first prize in the English Talent Competition for high school student last week.
I used to be poorly in spoken English. I was too shy to speak in class. Since she teaches us last term, she has been encouraging him to overcome fear and speak out in class. Thanks to her, I have made great progresses. Besides, I practiced several times in the front of her. It was her advice which made me a better speaker and full of confidence. Susan set a good example to me. I am determined to become an English teacher when I grow up.

The world’s native languages are dying out at an unprecedented (空前的) rate, taking with them irreplaceable knowledge about the natural world, according to a new study.
The study identified five global “hot spots” where languages are vanishing faster than anywhere else —— eastern Siberia, northern Australia, central South America, the US state of Oklahoma and the US Pacific Northwest. “Languages are suffering a global extinction crisis that greatly goes beyond the pace of species extinction,” linguistics (语言学的) professor David Harrison noted, who said half of the world’s 7, 000 languages were expected to disappear before the end of the century.
Native people had an intimate (详尽的) knowledge of their environment that was lost when their language disappeared, along with other certain things often unfamiliar to us, Harrison stressed. “Most of what we know about species and ecosystems is not written down anywhere, it’s only in people’s heads,” he said. “We are seeing in front of our eyes the loss of the human knowledge base.”
Harrison was one of a team of linguists who carried out the study. The researchers travelled to Australia this year to study native languages, some of the most endangered. According to Harrison, in Australia, they were heartened to see a woman in her 80s who was one of the only three remaining speakers of the Yawuru language passing on her knowledge to schoolchildren. He said such inter-generational exchanges were the only way native languages could survive. “The children had elected to take this course, no one forced them,” he said. “When we asked them why they were learning it, they said, ‘This is a dying language, we need to learn it’.” Also, while there they found a man with knowledge of the Amurdag language, which had previously been thought extinct.
The researchers said all five of the hot spots identified were areas that had been successfully colonized (殖民) and where a dominant language such as Spanish or English was threatening native tongues.
21. The underlined word “vanishing” in the second paragraph can be best replaced by ______.
A. developing B. changing C. increasing D. disappearing
22. According to Harrison, language extinction ______.
A. causes the researchers lots of worries
B. speeds up the pace of species extinction
C. threatens the existing of Spanish and English
D. brings about a loss of knowledge about the environment
23. Which of the following can be described as good news?
A. Native languages became less endangered in Australia.
B. A man was found with knowledge of the Amurdag language.
C. Researchers were well received by native people in Australia.
D. Many schoolchildren showed interest in the Yawuru language.
24. According to the text, native languages were endangered partly because of ______.
A. few researches done on them
B. the small population of native people
C. the strong influence of ruling languages
D. little education native people receive at school

Very mobile ears help many animals direct their attention to the rustle of a possible attacker. Researchers say these mobile ears have become a useful communication tool. Their studies of animal behaviour build up a picture of how communication and social skills developed.
“We’re interested in how they communicate,” said lead researcher Jennifer Wathan. “And being sensitive to what another individual is thinking is a fundamental skill from which other more complex skills develop.”
Ms. Wathan and her colleague Prof Karen McComb set up a behavioural experiment where 72 individual horses had to use visual clues from another horse in order to choose where to feed. They led each horse to a point where it had to select one of two buckets. On a wall behind this Decision-making spot was a life-sized photograph of a horse’s head facing either to left or right. In some of the trials the horses’ ears or eyes were covered.
If the ears and eyes of the horse in the picture were visible the horses being tested would choose the bucket towards which its gaze and its ears were directed. If the horse in the picture had either its eyes or its ears covered, the horse being tested would just choose a feed bucket at random.
Like many mammals that are hunted by predators (捕食者), horses can rotate (旋转) their ears through almost 180 degrees——but Ms. Wathan said that in our “human-centric” view of the world, we had overlooked the importance of these very mobile ears in animal communication.
“It seems there’s something in the visual clues——from both the eyes and the ears——that are really important she told BBC News. “Horses have quite rich social lives and relationships with other horses, so they’re a good species to look at this in.” And the more we look at communication across different species, the more we can consider what might have promoted the evolution of sophisticated communication and social skills.
25. Why does a horse rotate its ears?
A. To tell each other where they can go for the buckets.
B. To be curious about what the other horse is thinking.
C. To warn the other horse when an attacker is coming closer.
D. To express its hope to build up social relations with others.
26. Why did the researchers use the life-sized photograph of a horse in the experiment?
A. To help develop horses’ complex skills.
B. To lead other horses to feed themselves.
C. To make the horses in the experiment excited.
D. To provide clues for the horses in the experiment.
27. Why are ears and eyes important to horses?
A. They can find the feeding buckets more easily with ears and eyes.
B. With ears and eyes they can escape from dangers more easily.
C. With ears and eyes they can communicate with other horses.
D. Horses have quite rich social lives with ears and eyes.
28. What can be the best title of the passage?
A. Rotary Ears Serve as Communication Tools
B. Horses Have More Social Skills than Other Species
C. Experiments with Horses’ Ears

Everyone “talks” with their hands at least sometimes. Some people’s hand-talking or gesturing matches their messages well. Other people like to make overly large gestures that can be confusing. And still others don’t use their hands much at all. No matter which camp you fall into, it’s important to pay attention to your hand gestures while you are communicating. And also remember that hand gestures can have cultural meanings.
A few years ago, I was a speaker at a conference in Lisbon, Portugal. It was my first time in Portugal, and I became instantly fond of the special custard pastries (油酥点心) that Lisbon and Portugal are known for. One morning I went into a bakery and ordered two of the pastries. I did so by holding up two fingers, similar to the “victory” or “peace” gesture in the United States. The person behind the counter proceeded to put three pastries in a box. I later learned that the gesture for two would have been to raise my thumb and index finger. Even though my thumb wasn’t showing, the person behind the counter thought I was signaling for three.
I was lucky that I didn’t get into more trouble than an extra pastry. Many hand gestures are not universal. Before speaking in a country that you are not familiar with do some research to find out which gestures in your presentation might be misunderstood, not understood at all, or rude.
21. Why did the author go to Lisbon, Portugal?
A. To taste custard pastries.
B. To take a holiday.
C. To attend a meeting.
D. To learn Portuguese culture.
22. Which was the gesture the author made in the bakery?
A. B. C. D.
23. What do we know from the author’s experience?
A. One should be careful when ordering food in Portugal.
B. Hand gestures may have different meanings in different cultures.
C. The person behind the counter understood the author’s gesture.
D. The person behind the counter cheated the author.

The centuries-old art form of Pingshu, which is about recounting a legend through dialogue and exaggerated gestures by a performer wrapped in a Chinese-style gown, is making a welcome return to television after a long hiatus. Xu Fan reports.
Pingshu master Tian Lianyuan was shooting Beijing Pingshu Dahui, a program showcasing the artists’ storytelling performances. One desk and one folded fan was all that consisted for the props used by Tian to bring to life a battlefield story from Yang Jia Jiang, an influential novel based on the titular legendary family in the Northern Song Dynasty era. When the plot rose to its climax——where a warrior on horseback wields his sword as he rides toward his enemy——he abruptly kicked his leg high to mimic the role’s martial arts skills. The stunt drew ovations from the audience, who watched the performance at the headquarter, Beijing TV, on Nov 22nd.
As a pioneer to usher in the “golden decade”, Tian was the first person to appear on television screens and perform Pingshu on a show run by Liaoning TV, in 1985. And then propelled by the success of Tian’s shows, more than 20 television stations, including the country’s most-watched broadcaster CCTV, produced similar shows, which prompted Pingshu to rise to the peak of its popularity. But, the glory faded after the mid-1990s, due to falling production standards and the rise of television dramas. Over the past decade, Pingshu programs have almost disappeared from TV screens.
Luckily, Pingshu was inscribed in China’s national intangible cultural heritage list in 2008, putting it back in the spotlight. The rapid growth and popularity of the Internet also has helped Pingshu to reach more audiences through online video clips.
Now with Beijing Pingshu Dahui, the centuries-old art form has made a return to television screens after a decade long break.
24. Which of the following is True according to the passage?
A. Pingshu performers draw audience’s attention only through a series of gestures.
B. Pingshu performers usually wear suits instead of traditional gowns to perform.
C. Pingshu will be inscribed in world’s intangible cultural heritage list in 2018.
D. Pingshu reached its peak after so many similar Pingshu shows were produced.
25. What does the underlined word “shooting” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. hunting B. recording
C. moving D. kicking
26. The following are the reasons why Pingshu comes back to people’s life except________.
A. the rapid growth of the Internet
B. the popularity of the Internet
C. Pingshu performances on TV
D. the rise of television dramas
27. What can we conclude from Paragraph 2?
A. Pingshu performers need to master martial arts skills.
B. The pingshu props are too complex to master.
C. CCTV once produced Pingshu shows before mid-1990s.
D. Tian made the character more vivid through some gestures.

Disney has picked Chinese actor Liu Yifei to play Mulan in an upcoming film, following accusations against Hollywood of ‘whitewashing’.
Several Hollywood films have faced criticism in recent months for featuring white actors in Asian roles. Recent films accused of whitewashing include the Hollywood remake of Japanese anime Ghost in the Shell, which had Scarlett Johansson in the main role which was originally Japanese, and Chinese epic The Great Wall which starred Matt Damon as its lead character. Earlier this year, British actor Ed Skrein who was cast as an Asian character in the upcoming Hellboy remake pulled out of the film so that the role could be “cast appropriately”. It then went to Korean-American actor Daniel Dae Kim.
The live-action adaptation of the 1998 cartoon movie will tell the tale of the well-known Chinese heroine Hua Mulan. Mulan pretended to be a man to fight in the army to spare her weak father from being forced into the army.
The film has been under careful examination since it was announced that Disney intended to remake Mulan. An online campaign calling for an Asian actress in the role attracted more than 100,000 signatures before it was shut on Thursday.
Liu, nicknamed “Fairy Sister” for her delicate looks and previous roles in fantasy dramas, is well-known as an actress, model and singer in China. The 30-year-old is said to be fluent in English, having grown up partly in New York. The Hollywood Reporter said she was picked out of nearly 1,000 candidates for the film.
Disney’s announcement on its blog about Liu’s casting was met with delight on Twitter as well as on Sina Weibo, China’s microblogging network. Many online celebrated it as a win for diversity in Disney films. Chinese-American actress Ming-Na Wen, who voiced Mulan in the original animated movie, also gave her stamp of approval. Chinese netizens congratulated Liu, with many praising Disney’s choice. One commenter said, “Needs to know martial arts, can also speak English, has star quality ——it definitely should be Liu Yifei.”
24. Which actor or actress is non-white?

Dear Sir/Madam,
My name is Li Hua, I would like to work as a volunteer for the 2022 Beijing-Zhangjiakou winter Olympic Games. I’m a boy of eighteen years old from a high school in Beijing, where the Games will be held. My spoken English is good and I can communicate with foreigners fluently. What’s more, I have other advantages ——I’m especially fond of sports, familiar with Beijing, good at communication and always glad to help others. I am willing to provide the best service for every athlete in the Winter Olympic Games. Therefore, I think I’m suitable for serving the Games.
I would appreciate it if you could offer me the chance to be a volunteer.
Thank you!
Yours faithfully,
Li Hua
