He felt unhappy/bored/sad/worried.
Because the fence was 30 yards long and 3 yards high and Tom wanted to play games and he knew that the other boys would make fun of him.

Because he was successful to fool Ben and he didn’t want to let Ben know it,so he pretended to be worried. Read the dialogues ,pay attention to the tones and stress (语调、语气和重读）,then practice in pairs and act out.
Ben: “I’m going swimming.” “Do you want to come? Oh, you have to work, don’t you? What a pity!”
Tom: “Work?” “This isn’t work. I’m enjoying myself. Does a boy get a chance to paint a fence like this every day?”
Ben: “Tom，will you let me do some painting?”
Tom: “No, Ben, I can’t. Aunt Polly warned me to do it well. I’m the only person that can do it right. ”
Ben: “Oh, please, Tom. I can do it. I’ll be really careful. I’ll give you half my apple. Wait, I’ll give you all of it.”
Tom: “That’s a deal. But you must be careful.”
