教学设计
1. Warming up
Ask students to think about a question: Where did I come from? Collect some interesting answers that they got from their parents when they were little kids.
2. Pre-reading
As curious about the origin of human beings as we are, our ancestors from different cultures and religions came up with different ideas on how life began on the earth. Show students the stories in Chinese mythology and the Bible, both of which are religious ideas on the origin of life. Ask students to read the first paragraph quickly and find out the scientific explanation.
3. Fast reading
Ask students to read the passage for 4 minutes and match the main ideas with each paragraph. A tip (Read the first and the last sentence of each paragraph) is provided to students to help them finish the task more accurately and quickly.

4. Careful reading
(1) Students read stage one (Paragraph 1-3) to understand better the development of the earth, and finish the task below.
(2) Students continue to read stage two (Paragraph 4-5) to get to know the development of life, and fill in the flow chart.

There are several new words in it and a tip (Guess the meaning of new words through context) is offered to help students to guess the meaning of new words.
5. Quiz
After reading the passage, a group competition is held to check whether students have had a thorough understanding of the passage. The group which performs best in this part is rewarded with less homework. Questions are varied, such as Is it right to show films with dinosaurs and people together? Why? and It was necessary for plants to grow before animals because plants provided for animals to breathe.
6. Discussion
In the last part, we know that human beings are not taking good care of the earth and have caused great damage to it. Students will have a discussion about measures to protect the earth. They can make a dialogue with their partner about it. A possible version and some useful expressions are provided.
