When I was a kid, I found a book about a little girl whose grandma had passed away. Before falling asleep one night, I asked my grandmother to read it to me. When she finished reading, I looked into her light blue eyes.
“Grandma,” I asked, “will you ever die?”
“Unfortunately, I will,” she said.
“Do all people have to die?” I asked.
“Yes,” she answered.
“Why?” I asked.
“How could you enjoy every second of life if you knew you could live it forever? You never know how much you love something until you lose it.” she replied, I gave her a kiss on the cheek, telling her that I would love her forever.
The next night I sat on my parents’ bed watching TV with them. The phone rang. My dad answered it. I saw the smile on his face disappear. Then he looked at my mom and me. He stared at us for a long time. Then he said, “Grandma is gone. She had a heart attack. It was too late when people found her.”
I then sat there still for the next few minutes. I had never lost anyone before in my life. I didn’t know what to do. All that ran through my head was that I was never going to see her again. At that moment, I loved my grandma more than I ever had before. I thought of everything she had done for me.
Life changes though we don’t expect it to. I never knew I would remember forever what my grandma said that night. Of course I am upset when people die, but missing them makes me love them more every second. No one can live forever, so we should try to live every second to the fullest.

There was once a boy who liked nothing more in the world than to win. He loved winning at whatever it might be: football, cards, video games... And because he couldn’t stand losing, he had become an expert in all kinds of tricks. He could play tricks in every situation without being noticed, even in video games or playing alone. He could win without ever being caught.
He won so many times that everyone saw him as the champion. It meant that almost no one wanted to play with him. One person who did play with him was a poor boy. He was a bit younger. The champion really enjoyed himself by making the boy look foolish.
But the champion ended up getting bored. He needed something more, so he decided to apply for the national video games championship, where he would find some competitors worthy of himself. At the championship he was eager to show his skills, but when he tried using all those tricks he knew from a thousand different games, none of them worked. The judges had prevented (阻止) any of the tricks from working.
He felt embarrassed: he was a good player, but without his tricks, he couldn’t beat a single competitor. Finally, the judges announced the name of the champion. It was the poor boy whom he had always beaten!
The boy realized that the poor boy had been cleverer than him. It hadn’t mattered to the poor boy if he lost or got a good beating, because what he was really doing was learning from each of his defeats. And from so much learning he had become a real master.
29. Why could the boy manage to win at everything?
A. Because he was good at playing tricks.
B. Because he knew every situation well.
C. Because he was cleverer than others.

My friend Jason and I wanted to do something to help other people who are less fortunate and help us grow at the same time. After we decided that we would volunteer in Nepal, I did some research on the Internet and I found Volunteer Nepal and felt strongly that it was the right choice for us.
While making our plans, Jason and I realized that others might like the opportunity to be a part of our experience. So before leaving for Nepal, we asked the people we knew whether they would be interested in donating (捐赠) cash or goods to Nepal Orphans (孤儿) Home.
One friend, whose family owns a chain called Drake Supermarket, told others about it. His effort paid off. We received donations that filled 29 boxes with sporting goods, toys, coloring books, pencils, children’s books, and more. The boxes were later taken to Drake’s warehouse where I prepared them for shipment. Drake agreed to ship them to Nepal for free.
The boxes had arrived at the Volunteer House when we arrived there. The next day, Jason and I unpacked the boxes. The children from the orphanages lined up and were each able to choose a gift. This process took about an hour, but the looks on their faces and the happiness that we saw in their eyes made it one of the best days of our life.
We visited the orphanages there in the following days. Being with the children at the orphanages was both sad and wonderful. I’m sure that anyone who has volunteered will understand what I mean by that. My experience as a volunteer was very rewarding (有益的). It has changed me as a person and the way I viewed life in the past.

The popular film, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, which is based on Mandela’s autobiography, has been shown in South Africa and the United States since November 28,2013.Born in Transkei, South Africa on July 18,1918,Mandela was sentenced to five years’ labour for encouraging violence against anti-black laws in 1962.Two years later, he was sentenced to prison for life for being one of the ANC leaders, but after being released from prison in 1990,he continued to make efforts to achieve the dream of making black and white people equal. Owing to his great work, not only did he win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993,but he was also elected (as) President of South Africa a year later.
This excellent film has been made in honor of Mandela, which is really worth seeing because you can benefit a lot from it.
