Teaching aims
By the end of this lesson,students will be able to :
learn some new words and expressions, such as magma, lava, crater, ash cloud, volcanic, eruption;
have a deep understanding of the whole passage and know how important a volcanologist’s job is;
raise people’s awareness of protecting nature and tell people how to protect we human beings from natural disasters.
Important and difficult points
Students should know the structure of the passage and and the importance of being a volcanologist.
Raise students’ awareness of respecting nature and know how to protect people from natural disasters.
Teaching procedure
Lead-in
Two students are welcomed to do class report. It will teach students some knowledge of volcanoes. For example:
(What do you know about volcano?
(Do you know how a volcano erupts?
(What types of volcanoes do you know?
Students can also learn some new words in this part. It is helpful for next teaching steps.
Fast reading
Students are asked to read the passage quickly to get the main idea of each part:
Part 1(Para 1-2): The writer’s job and its importance.
Part 2(Para 3-4): The writer’s experience of watching the volcano eruption.
Part 3(Para 5) :The reasons for the writer’s enthusiasm about his job.
This will help students to know better about the passage’s structure and main idea.
Careful reading
Task 1: Students are asked to read the first paragraph carefully and try to fill in the blanks.
“I have the greatest job in the world. I travel to unusual places and work __________ people from all over the world. Sometimes working outdoors, sometimes in an office, sometimes using scientific ________ and sometimes meeting local people and tourists. I am never bored. Although my job is ___________ dangerous, I don't mind because danger excites me and makes me feel alive. The first paragraph is an introduction about the writer’s job. By doing this task, students will have a better understanding of being a volcanologist.
Task 2: students will read the second paragraph and answer two questions.
What is a volcanologist's job?
Collect information-----evaluate information-----predict where lava from the volcano will flow next and how fast.
2. Why his job is very important?
Volcanologists study volcanos so that they can warn people when the volcano is going to erupt and save many lives.
This part will help students to know what exactly does the author do for his job and how important his job is.
Task 3: students will play a game. The rules of the game are:
Each group design one question;
Collect all the questions and rush to answer these questions;
One point for each correct answer;
Highest score wins.
This will stimulate students’ interest in understanding the passage. By designing the questions, they will have a deep understanding for the passage.
Task 4: Teacher will ask a question: Do you want to be a volcanollogist?Students will work in pairs and make a dialogue about this topic. It will help students to know the qualities of a volcanologist.
Post reading
Step 1: brain storm some natural disasters: earthquake, flood, thunderstorm, landslide, tsunami, hurricane, drought.
Step 2: Students work in groups and make a poster to tell people the ways protect human beings from natural disasters. One representative will be asked to go to the front to introduce his/her group’s poster.
Step3 : cultivate students’ awareness of respecting nature by watching a video.
Students will know how to protect people from natural disasters.
Homework
Compulsory: Do you want to be a volcanologist?Yes or no? Please write a composition about it.
Optional: Surf on the internet to know more about natural disasters.
Homework will help students to consolidate what they have learned in this lesson.
