These days the subject of safety on campus is talked about quite often. Some students’ mobile photos are stolen, some students fight with and hurt one another, and others are knocked down by the fast running motorbikes or cars.
These problems are common on campus. I think there are three causes for these. Firstly, some students don’t take care of their own things. They are still young and not careful enough. Secondly, some students want to do everything well. They want to be the winners in exams, and they also want to be the winners in fighting. And thirdly, the campus guards don’t carry on their duties well..
In order to have a safe campus, all the students should be very careful about their own things. They should also mind their behaviors and act politely. He heard Mama coming down the hall.
“Did you do this?” his mother asked. Calvin looked out from under the covers. His mother stood over him, holding a rubber spider.
“Do what?” he asked.
“You put that thing in my bed,” Trudy told him, stepping out from behind Mama.
“Don’t think that just because it’s your birthday you can get away with something like this,” Mama scolded (责骂).
“You do want your present, don’t you?” That wiped the smile off Calvin’s face.
“Course I do,” he said.
“Then you apologize (道歉).”
Calvin dropped his head. “Sorry Trudy,” he muttered (嘟囔).
“Here,” Mama said. “Happy birthday.” At the breakfast table she handed Calvin an envelope. Inside were tickets to the matinee show of Lomax the Magnificent, the world-famous magician and hypnotist. “You’ve got two tickets there,” Mama said, “and I know someone who’d really love to go along.” She smiled at Trudy.
“You don’t mean here, do you?” Calvin asked, eyeing his little sister.
“Well, that would be really nice. But those tickets are yours. If you want to ask somebody—” Calvin didn’t wait for his mother to finish. He rushed out of the house to cell Rodney, his pal next door, that the two of them were going to see Lomax the Magnificent.

Being able to multitask—doing several things at the same time—is considered (考虑,认为) a welcome skill by most people. But if we consider the situation of the young people aged from eight to eighteen, we should think again.
What we often see nowadays is that young people juggle a larger number of electronic devices (电子产品) as they study. While working, they also surf on the Internet, send out emails, answer the telephone and listen to music on their iPods. In a sense, they are spending a large amount of time in fruitless efforts (努力) as they multitask.
Multitasking is even changing the relationship between family members. As young people give so much attention to their own worlds, they seem to have no time to spend with the other people around them. They can no longer greet family members when they enter the house, nor can they eat at the family table.
Multitasking also has an effect (影响) on young people’s performance at university and in the workplace. When asked about their opinions of the effects of modern gadgets (器具) on their performance of tasks, many young people gave a positive (肯定的) response (回应). However, the response from the worlds of education and business was not quite as positive. Educators feel that multitasking by children has a serious effect on later development of study skills. They believe that many college students now need help to improve their study skills. Similarly, employers (雇主) feel that young people entering the job market need to be taught all over again, as modern gadgets have made it unnecessary (没必要) for them to learn special skills to do their work.
1. What does the underlined word “juggle” most probably mean?
A. Want to buy.? ????????????????????????????? B. Use at the same time.
C. Take the place of.????????????????????????? D. Search information from.
2. In Paragraph 3, the author points out that__________.
A. family members do not greet each other
B. family members do not eat at the family table

四川广安伏龙初中2019中考英语阅读练(四)及答案

第一部分:任务型阅读
This week, our topic is pollution. What are the answers to all of our pollution problems? We asked two experts to give their views.
◆Forest Smith is a member of Green First, an environmental group.
Our future on the Earth looks very bad. We are dumping waste on our land. We can’t breathe the fresh air. The sea is polluted, too.
I visited some relatives recently in a small village. They grow their own food and cycle everywhere. They are not wealthy, but they are happy and healthy.
We must close the factories producing useless products. That will reduce rubbish and air pollution. We must recycle more, give up all cars, and improve public transport.
A large problem is overpopulation in big cities. We must give up big cities and factories, and go back to a simple way of life.
◆John Green is a scientist at a university.
Things are not as bad as Forest says. We’ll have a bright future. We don’t need to give up cars but we need to invent better, cleaner engines.
This won’t stop the problem of traffic jams. So we need better public transport. We should also recycle more.
But some things are getting better. My sister returned last month after living abroad for five years. She said, “Our old neighbourhood doesn’t look the same as before-it is cleaner and greener now.”
In a word, science has brought many improvements to our life.
Forest Smith: A member of an (1) ________ group Our future on the Earth looks bad. ◆We’re (2) ________ waste on our land.◆The air can’t be (3)_________ in. ◆People have polluted the sea.◆The population in big cities is very (4) ________.

Think of all the things you throw away:juice bottles, soda cans, candy covers. It? adds up.How much rubbish do you produce? Americans throw away about 1 ton of rubbish per person every year. That's 2000 pounds of rubbish! Most of the rubbish gets covered in big holes in the round called landfills(垃圾掩埋法).

What’s the meaning of “dark horse”? It’s someone who wins when no one expects it. Han Xiao’peng took China’s first gold on snow. He became an Olympic “dark horse” last Thursday by winning the gold medal in men’s freestyle aerial skiing(自由式滑雪空中技巧) at Turin in Italy. He made two almost perfect jumps for the highest score. Han had never won a world gold medal before, let alone(更不用说) in the Olympics!
“I never thought this would happen,” said the 23-year-old. “I feel like I’m in a dream.” It’s China’s second gold medal at the Turin Olympics. But more important, Han’s gold was the country’s first ever in a snow sport. In 2002, China’s Yang Yang won the gold for speed skating at the winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, US. Just because Han’s win was unexpected doesn’t mean that he didn’t work hard.
Han grew up in Jiangsu Province. Before he started his training on snow, he used to be an acrobat(杂技演员) at a circus. In 1995, a coach found his talent(才能). The coach, Yang Er’qi, said Han had the agility(灵活性) and courage to be a ski jumper. When Yang first took the 12-year-old to northern China, the boy couldn’t swim, skate or ski. But he wasn’t afraid of the high platform(跳台) and kept on training.
Han almost left the sport after hurting his knee months before the Salt Lake Games. In that Olympics he only got 24th. “I was hopeless at that time, but my family and the coach stood firmly(坚强地) behind me, helping me through,” he recalled.
??? Han Xiaopeng worked so hard that he won the gold medal in the Olympics at last. Because of his success, more and more people in China are becoming interested in skiing. We are proud of him and we hope he will have another big success in the next winter Olympics.

Answers to life can be found in everyday events. Watching nature, watching people and watching animals communicate with each other provide some of the simplest ways to life’s biggest problems.
This became clearer to me yesterday. It caused me to ask myself, “How do I respond (反应) to the storms in life?”
People usually run when it starts to rain. I love to walk in it, stand on my front door and feel it. I grew up doing it and have never really felt the fear many people do.
The animal world senses changes in the weather far earlier than humans. My dog, Ricky, begins to shake long before the storm is close enough to be noticed. I was about to feed my three dogs yesterday and as usual, I let them out in the yard first. They didn’t move when thunder came across the skies. So I placed their food in their bowls and called Ricky into the kitchen.
Ricky was just standing there in place next to his bowl. The thunder became louder, which forced him to stop eating his meal. Then I watched Phil. He made his way across the kitchen floor and stood over Ricky’s bowl. He ate all the remaining food. Generally, if Ricky was standing there, he wouldn’t dare (敢) come close. But today, he took advantage (优势) of the storm and got what he wanted. His hope for the prize outweighed (胜过) his fear of the storm.
That’s when it hit me. As men, we face all kinds of storms. They come in unannounced. Sometimes we stay in a corner or under the blankets, hoping it will all pass. However, if you dare put your head out, you’ll discover there’re people doing what they must to get what they must have out of life. Isn’t it time you decided to take advantage of the storm?
1. According to the writer, answers to life ______.
A. are difficult to find?????? ?????????????????????????????????? B. lie around us

A. Phil wasn’t afraid of the storm.????????? ???? B. Ricky stopped eating food.
C. Phil ate the rest of Ricky’s food.?????? ???????? D. Ricky sensed the storm earlier than he.
4. What would be the best title for the passage?

C. Stop Storms in our Daily Life??? ????????????????? D. Pay Attention to Everyday Events

Have you ever seen a car without a driver? It sounds crazy, but these computer-driven driverless cars will soon be filling roads near you. Companies like Google and Tesla have been designing and testing these cars, and the technology is there.
So how? The cars have sensors(感应器)all around which can find other cars and objects in the road. Road signs are read by cameras, and satellite navigation systems(卫星导航系统)are used so the car knows how to get where you want to go. All you have to do is type in the address! Finally, a central computer system takes in all the information that it receives from the sensors and cameras and works out when to speed up, stop and turn.
Sound like your idea of heaven(天堂)? Sitting back, looking out of the windows and even watching a film or reading a book while ‘driving’ would be possible with this new technology. You wouldn’t have to worry about remembering directions to where you’re going. In addition, computers would also drive more safely than people — they would obey the rules and have quicker action times when in dangerous situations.
However, there are many drawbacks of driverless cars. Computers would have difficulties making ethical(道德的)decisions: if a child ran into the road, would the computer choose to hit the child or turn suddenly and potentially kill the car’s passengers? Moreover, I personally find driving fun –I’d miss never driving a car myself. There would also be many other decisions to be made –should children, or drunk people, be allowed in a driverless car by themselves? Or would there need to be a person with a driving license in the car at all times?
I’m not certain I’d want a driverless car – but it’s only a matter of time before they’ll become more affordable and popular on our roads.
1. When using a driverless car, you need only ????.
A. read the road signs carefully????????? ? B. check the cameras
C. put the address into the computer??? D. remember the directions
2. The third paragraph mainly tells us about the ????of driverless cars.
A. instructions????????? B. standards?????????? C. advantages ???????D. tests
3. The underlined word “potentially” in Paragraph 4 means “??? “.
A. possibly????????? B. successfully???????? C. especially?????? D. naturally
4. What’s the writer’s opinion about future driverless cars?
A. They’ll cause more accidents.????????????B. They’ll be less expensive.
C. They’ll use less energy.???????????????????? D. They’ll run much faster.

Ted, my little brother, is in Grade One. Last Friday he came back from school with a letter. The letter was from his teacher. “I got a red flower today. Could you please sign this note?” he said to mum. The note showed that he had been talking in class.
Ted hardly gets top scores in his school work. The best he gets is “OK”, but he often gets “You can do better than this.” Mum knows what it means. She tells me “You can do better than this” means “Extremely bad” in China.
In the USA, teachers never say anything too bad about their students, even if the students are making trouble in class or not working hard enough. The worst they might say is “Please be nicer tomorrow”. Many parents are satisfied with a B-grade for each subject.
But things in Chinese schools are quite different. Parents have high expectations for their children. I sometimes felt that my second-grade cousin spend more time on homework than I did when I was 6th grade in the US! Yet his parents and teachers didn’t think he worked hard enough.
Is it too strict in China? Or is it not strict enough in the USA? Maybe both are true.
1.Why did Ted come home with a letter last Friday?
??????? A. Because the teacher wanted to visit his mother.
??????? B. Because he did something wrong.
??????? C. Because the teacher was happy with his progress.
??????? D. Because the teacher thought he was too lazy.
2.If a student in the USA gets “OK” in his schoolwork, it means ________.

Last week, 169 Junior 1 students at No. 35 Middle School of Shenyang took their first no-teacher exam. After the teacher handed out the exam paper, he left the room and never came back. A student collected in the papers when the exam ended.
"That test was not only a test of knowledge, but also a test of moral (道德). We wanted to show students how important honesty (诚实) is," said the school's headmaster. The school says no cheating (作弊)happened in the test. Next year, it wants 80% of its exams to be without teachers. But students have different ideas.
"I was happy and excited during the exam because my teachers trusted (信任) me," said Lang Yudan, a 13-year-old girl in Class 11.
"Schools must trust students a lot not to use invigilators (监考人). But I think it is too early. Some students will cheat if there are no invigilators. And the students will not be able to ask for help when needed,” said Hua Sha.
"I don' t like having invigilators in exams. When they walk around the classroom, they make me nervous. I would get higher marks without them in the room because I would feel more relaxed," Liu Qingxi said.
"I think it's very important to have invigilators in exams. Many students want to check their answers with each other after they have finished papers. And they can also keep the classroom in order when something unusual happens. They may make me nervous, but I still think we need them," Shangguan Yuan said.
Not using invigilators may be a good idea. But before using it, schools must tell students the importance of honesty and try to find ways to solve something unusual in exams.

No pain, no gain
Wrong! Exercise is not meant to hurt. Indeed, pain is your body telling you something's wrong, and continuing to exercise could lead to serious injury(伤害). You can not see any object unless light from that object gets into your eyes. Some of the things you see give off light of their own. The sun, the stars, a lighted lamp are examples that can be seen by their own light. Such things are luminous. Most of the things you see are not giving off light of their own. They are simply reflecting light that falls on them from the sun or some other luminous bodies. The moon, for example, does not give off any light of its own. It is non-luminous. You see it because sunlight falls on it and some of it reflects in our direction. So moon light is only second hand sunlight.
When you look at a book, it sends to your eyes some of the light which falls on it, and you see the book. If light could be kept out from where you are so that there would be no light for the book to reflect, then you could not see the book even with your eyes wide open.
Light travels so fast that the time in which it travels from the book you are reading to your eyes is so short as if there were no time at all. Light reaches us from the moon, which is about 380 000 kilometers away, in only a little more than a second.

The World’s Water Shortage
??? The world is not only hungry, but it is also thirsty for water. This may seem strange to you, since nearly 70 percent(百分比)of the earth’s surface is covered with water. But about 97 percent of this huge amount is sea water, or salt water. Man can only drink and use the other 3 percent-the fresh water from rivers, lakes, underground, and other sources(资源). And we cannot even use all of that, because some of it is in the form of icebergs and glaciers(冰川). Even worse, some of it has been polluted.
??? However, as things stand today, this small amount of fresh water is still enough for us. But our need for water is increasing(增加)rapidly-almost day by day. Only if we take steps to deal with this problem now can we avoid(避免)a severe(严重的)worldwide water shortage later on.
??? We all have to learn how to stop wasting our valuable water. One of the first steps is to develop ways of reusing it.
??? Today in most large cities, water is used only once and then sent out into a sewer system(下水道). From there it returns to the sea or runs into underground storage tanks. But it is possible to pipe used water to a purifying(净化)plant. There it can be treated with chemicals so that it can be used again, just as if it were fresh from a spring.
??? But even if every large city purified and reused its water, we still would not have enough. All we’d have to do to make use of the vast reserves(贮备)of sea water in the world is to remove the salt.

Today there are 6 billion people on the earth. By the year 2050 there may be 12.5 billion. This means we need more food.
One way to produce more food is by growing stronger plants. For thousands of years, farmers have made plants better. Every season, they pick the best plants for the next season. It works very slowly. Since 1983, scientists have been able to change plants more quickly by changing their genetic material (遗传物质). Foods from plants grown in this way are called genetically modified foods (转基因食品), or GM foods.
By changing the genetic material of a plant, it is possible to make new plants. They make plants which are strong against plant diseases. They can also help in our diseases: a kind of rice is being prepared (准备), for example, which stops people from becoming blind.
Rich countries produce GM food because they are easy to grow and bring in more money. Poor countries are interested in them because they help produce more food.
GM plants are not natural. No one knows how good or bad they are. Making GM foods is only one way of feeding people in 2050. There are strong feelings against them, because they are unnatural. They may feed people, then hurt them or their children later. But, both rich and poor countries are very interested in their use, and they are not going to go away. If you want to become a fluent(流利的)English speaker you should take some advice: There are four skills in learning English. They are reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills you should first master the skills of reading and listening.
??? Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the meaning of the sentence, the meanings of the unfamiliar words, etc. There is no need for you to pay much attention to grammars or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you come across, but the fact that you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them, for example in other passages or books, is enough. It would be better to prepare yourself a notebook so you can write down the important words or sentences in it_
??? As for listening, there are two choices: besides reading, you can listen every day for about 30 minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and become skillful at your reading, then you can catch up on your listening. Since you have lots of inputs in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practice listening.
??? For listening you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children.? Their languages are easy. Or if you are good at listening you can listen to VOA or BBC programs every day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes.
??? If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve automatically, and you can be sure that with a little effort they will become perfect.

“I don't like my parents. They always tell me I should do this, and should not do that.It sometimes makes me angry,”said Zhang Hua,a middle school student in Guangzhou.Do you have the same problem?Perhaps your parents had the same problem when they were your age long ago.Why does it seem that some parents are not so friendly in their children's eyes?
One of the biggest problems is when someone becomes a parent,he/she likes worrying about things. They worry about everything about you from the time you were born. They do a lot for you, though something would make you angry, because they care about you and worry about you. They worry about your choice of friends, food you eat, your work at school, how much sleep you get, etc. All these things are part of your life. They want you to grow up healthily and happily.
So how can you make things easier on yourself? It's easier than you think.Just make sure your parents know what you're doing.Get them to know your friends.Phone them if you stay somewhere else late so that your parents don't call every hospital in the phone book looking for you.Say sorry to them when you make mistakes.Take responsibility(责任)for what you have done.Talk about your ideas with them. They may talk about theirs with you.
Most of all,try to think about why your parents do this or do that. They are still practicing being parents and need help you can give them. Some day, when you become a parent, they may be able to help you know how to get on with your children.

Having a teenager at home can be a real headache. Many teenagers smoke, drink and even fight. They often do something dangerous.
????? Earlier studies have shown that teenagers are more likely (可能) to make irrational decisions than people from any other age group, including children and adults. Is it that teenagers are too young to tell right from wrong? Not really. So what’s the reason?
?????? According to Laurence, a teacher from a US university, the reason is that teenagers care a lot about how their peers (同龄人) view them—that is “peer influence”.
?????? As children enter their teenage years, they spend more time with their friends and classmates, and also they care more about what they think of them. This makes teenagers make decisions without thinking about the costs.
????? In a test, a group of teenagers were asked to play a video driving game. When they played with their friends watching around them, they took more chances and drove more carelessly because that would increase their possibility of winning. But when they played alone, they drove more safely.
?????? Why do peers have such a big influence on teens’ behavior?
?????? As Laurence sees it, a teenager’s brain is like a car with a good accelerator (油门) but a weak brake (刹车). The “accelerator” is fully developed by teenage years while the “brake” is still not fully developed. When teenagers are watched by their peers, they usually push hard on the accelerator. With their weak brake, it is likely that they are going to end up in an accident.
?????? But the good news is that a violent (暴力的)teenager doesn’t necessarily become a violent adult. About two-thirds to three-quarters of violent youth grow out of it. “They get more self-controlled.”?
