Reading: The Band That Wasn’t

Before class:
The whole class will be divided into four groups, with six members in each group. Four leaders will be chosen according to their English capacity and their personalities in order to better adjust to various class activities.
One student will present a class report about music, from which students will have a general idea about different types of music.

Students enjoy a song from one of their classmates to have a general idea of today’s topic.
Students get the idea of “bands” and share their favorite bands to the whole class.
Students guess which band is the teacher’s favorite.
Invite a volunteer to sing a song in front of the whole class in order to introduce the topic of this unit.
Elaborate the definition of “bands” by giving an example and ask students to share their favorite bands.
Show some pictures of famous bands to students, tell students that these bands are very famous but not the teacher’s favorite, and introduce the teacher’s favorite band, “Monkees”.

Detailed reading

Students read paragraph 2, 3 and 4 again, compare most bands with Monkees and find their different ways to succeed.
Students are given three key words and are requested to give the three words a right order for most bands and for Monkees.
Students answer two questions: What do the two ways have in common? Which way do you prefer?
Students read the title again to check their guessing and think why the author used it as the title.
Ask students to read paragraph 2, 3 and 4 again, compare most bands with Monkees and find their different ways to succeed.
Request students to use the three given words to give the right order of the two different ways of success.
Ask students to answer the following two questions: What do the two ways have in common? Which way do you prefer?

首先让学生仔细阅读第2,3,4段,比较普通乐队和门基乐队成功道路的差异。其次让学生用三个相同但顺序不同的关键词总结这两条成功之路。总结完毕之后,学生能够清晰的看到二者有一定的相同之处,让学生陈述是什么地方相同,他们又倾向于哪一种方式。这两个问题的设置,一方面让学生明白成功道路不尽相同,但是成功路上需要的很多品质却是相似的,这一点也能应用到他们的成长历程中。另一方面,能让学生将书本知识联系到自身实际,应用正确的价值观,分析自己适合哪种成功之路。对标题的再次阅读与前面形成照应,验证学生的假设,同时引导学生思考写作中题目的选择问题。

Students use the given expressions to offer advice on how to achieve one’s dreams.
Students are expected to prepare an interview based on what they have learned from the passage and from their group discussion. They will distribute their roles and tasks. In addition, students are encouraged to cooperate with each other to present their interview. Two groups will be selected to present their outcome and the other groups are supposed to give comments according to the standards.
Ask students to use the given expressions to offer advice on how to achieve one’s dreams.
Introduce the group interview to students, showing them the basic standards for their presentation and offering them necessary help. Select two groups to present their interviews and ask the rest groups to give comments and the teacher should also give students some comments according to their presentation.
学生根据任务提示进行小组活动,最后展示访谈过程和结果。在展示过程中,可充分发挥小组的合作能力,培养学生的集体意识,同时锻炼了学生的语言表达能力,辩证思维能力。在评价过程中,学生能够更加清楚自己小组的优劣之处,取长补短,以期取得更长远的进步和发展。

Ma began studying English at a young age. He would ride 70 miles on his bicycle to give tourists tours of the area to practice his English for nine years. He became?pen pals?with one of those foreigners.
Later in his youth, Ma struggled attending college. The Chinese entrance exams are held only once a year and it took Ma four years to pass. After graduation, Jack Ma applied for 30 different jobs and got rejected by all. "I went for a job with the police; they said, 'you're no good,'" "I even went to?KFC?when it came to my city. Twenty-four people went for the job. Twenty-three were accepted. I was the only guy...".?In addition he applied 10 times for Harvard Business School (HBS) and got rejected.
In 1994, Ma heard about the Internet. In early 1995, he went to the US to get introduced to the Internet. During his first encounter he searched the word "beer". Although he found information related to beer from many countries, he was surprised to find none from China. So he and his friend created an "ugly" website related to China.?He launched the website at 9:40 AM, and by 12:30 PM he had received emails from some Chinese wishing to know about him. This is when Ma realized that the Internet had something great to offer.
