Best cities to live in the U.S.
CALIFORNIA—Palos Verdes Estates Population: 13,582 Area (total): 12.36 km2
Located along the Pacific Coast less than 30 miles from Los Angeles, Palos Verdes Estates is the best place in California to live. One of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the country, the typical household earns over $200,000 a year, more than triple the national median household income of $55,322.
The high ranking may not come as a surprise to those familiar with it, as it is a master-planned city, designed by the Olmsted Brothers, sons of Frederick Law Olmsted — architect of New York City’s Central Park and the Stanford University campus.
CONNECTICUT—Darien
Population: 21,519 Area (total): 60.6 km2
Darien, Connecticut is home to one of the wealthiest and best educated populations in the country. Well over half of all households in Darien earn at least $200,000 a year and about four out of five adults in Darien have abachelor’s degree or higher. Nationwide, fewer than one in three adults have a bachelor’s degree. A high median income is bolstered (增强)not only by high educational attainment, but also by a strong job market. Just 3.6 percent of workers in Darien were unemployed in 2017, below the 4.7 percent state and 4.4 percent national 2017 unemployment rates.
ARIZONA一Paradise Valley
Population: 13,833 Area (total): 39.98 km2
Most houses in Paradise Valley, Arizona, are worth over $1.3 million, more than seven times the U.S. median home value. Paradise Valley residents are able to afford such expensive houses because of their relatively high incomes. The typical household in the city earns $173,487 a year, one of the highest median household incomes in the country.
Paradise Valley lives up to its name as a popular destination to relax. The town is home to several resorts and a number of golf courses. Located just north of Phoenix and Scottsdale, it is also known for its high-end dining and nightlife.
NEW YORK—Croton-on-Hudson Population: 8,209 Area (total): 28 km2
Croton-on-Hudson is a small village on the eastern bank of the Hudson River, less than 40 miles north of Manhattan. The village is on a train line that goes directly into the city, and largely as a result, more than one in every four workers in Croton-on-Hudson commute using public transit. The village’s proximity to New York City contributes to high property values as most homes in the community are worth over half a million dollars.
Which area has the most highest population density?
A. Palos Verdes Estates B. Darien C. Paradise Valley D. Croton-on-Hudson
Which of the following is correct according to the text?
Croton-on-Hudson has a powerful transport system in the city.
Paradise Valley is famous for its relaxing and high-quality living environment.
Darien is home to the best educated populations who have a bachelor’s degree or higher.
Palos Verdes Estates is a master-planned city, designed by the architect of New York City.
From which section of the newspaper is the text probably taken?
A. Culture B. Travel C. Sports D. Life

A Swiss airplane powered only by energy from the sun left from Abu Dhabi early on January 9, 2019. Its creators hope the plane will make the first around-the-world journey without any fuel. The plane is called Solar Impulse 2. It has one seat and is made from carbon fiber. The plane weighs only as much as a car but its wings are wider than a Boeing 747. The plane’s wings stretch 72 meters across. Those wings include 17,000 solar units, or cells, which capture the sun’s energy. The energy allows the plane to fly day and night.
Two Swiss scientists built the plane. Bertrand Piccard is also an explorer who made the first non-stop flight around the world in a balloon. Andre Borschberg is an engineer and trained fighter pilot. The scientists say they are not trying to alter the airplane industry. Instead, they want to show that new energy sources and technologies can achieve what some say is impossible.“We want to show we can fly day and night in an aircraft without a drop of fUel.” Mr_ Piccard said.
Some parts of the trip will require the pilots to be in the tiny plane for five to six days and nights in a row. So it is good that the pilot’s seat is also a toilet.
The plane’s route begins in the United Arab Emirates. The pilots also plan stops in Oman, India, and China. They will cross the Pacific Ocean, stop in the United States, and continue over southern Europe or North Africa. They plan to arrive back in the United Arab Emirates in late May or early June.
Internet viewers can go to the Solar Impulse website to see the plane’s location and listen to broadcasts from the pilots.
Why does the plane have wider wings?
A. It can fly faster and land safely. B. It will make the plane appear larger.
C. It may look like a Boeing 747. D. It can get the sun’s energy easily.
What does the underlined word “alter” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Improve. B. Change.
What do we know about the trip mentioned in the text?
A. It will take seventy to eighty days and nights.
C. It is broadcast live on the Internet.
What does the text mainly talk about?
A newly-built plane consuming no energy.
A solar-powered plane travelling the globe.
A newly-invented plane capturing the sun’s energy.
Solar energy being fully applied to the airplane industry.
C
There is a saying that “all plans are useless, but planning is vital.” Plans are useless as they become out of date very quickly. But without the process of planning, you won’t prepare for the future. You need to plan, but don’t stick to your plans so rigidly that you miss opportunities.
Life is unpredictable, so why plan? First, all of the things you want to achieve in your life require effort and preparation. You need to ensure you acquire the qualifications and experience that will allow you to progress in your chosen career, and to do that, you need a plan. Having a plan gives you a framework against which to measure your progress. Have you achieved what you set out to do? If not, why not? What can you learn from your successes and failures? A plan also provides a reference against which you can judge new opportunities. How much will this opportunity contribute to achieving your goals? If it doesn’t, why do you want to do it? Is it a distraction or have your goals and plan changed?
One good way to plan the future is to create a version of your resume three, five, and ten years in the future. What qualifications would appear? What job titles would you have? Which companies would you have worked for? What experience would you have gained in each of the roles you have undertaken? If you don’t know what to put on the resume, why not look in the papers or on the Internet for job advertisements. They will tell you what people are looking for when filling these roles today. Although this won’t change dramatically, certain aspects, such as qualifications, computer literacy, and international experience, will be more in demand. So by looking at the job requirements today and thinking about the future, you should be able to construct an outline future resume to work toward.
A good plan needs to include four key elements:
A vision statement that describes where you want to be.
A set of objectives that, if achieved, will lead you to the vision.
A “success map” showing how these objectives link together.
An indicator describing what success will look like at each stage.
Think first about your vision of the future: is it all about a single goal, such as becoming president of a multinational company, or is it about a lifestyle, such as being a wealthy and respected partner in a law firm? Use some of the exercises described over the previous pages to help you to think about your vision. Next, write your vision down in a vision statement. This should not be longer than a paragraph, but needs to contain all the attributes that are important to you. Spend time on this; it is the important first step in planning your future.
According to Paragraph 1, it can be inferred that .
A. it’s unnecessary to plan precisely
a good plan brings you a good future
you can plan for more opportunities
plan itself is not as important as planning
According to Paragraph 2, plan is important for us in the following aspects except that —
it reminds us whether we progress or not occasionally
it makes us to change our goals based on the progress
it tells us whether we are following the targets or not
it enables us to be aware of what we’ve already had or not
With the help of the future resume, we would be clear about the following things except
A. the ability to judge new opportunities B. experience we would have
C. qualifications we need to acquire D. job requirements to fit in
According to the last paragraph, the vision is important because .
we could dream large in the vision statement
it contains all the attributes we’ve had
it illustrates the future image
it’s only about one goal and easy to achieve
Children of all ages gathered in New York City recently for the International Toy Fair. Hidden among already popular toys were new, high-tech educational products. Toymakers are working to create these products for improving a child’s emotional intelligence.
Companies showed off their products last week at New York’s Jacob Javitz Convention Center. PlelQ is a set of plastic toy blocks. It uses visual reality technology to teach words, numbers and other things, Edison Duran directs the company that makes PlelQ. She showed people at the toy fair how virtual images appear on the blocks when they are held in front of a tablet camera. PlelQ has children act as teacher or guide to a companion character.
On the other side of the convention center, Karen Hu from another company demonstrated an educational robot called Woobo. The robot comes programmed with educational games and activities. Children use its touch screen face to get them started. Hu described how the robot can help a child who has autism (自闭症).“The child can communicate with Woobo and follow some of the instructions Woobo is giving because he thinks of this as a companion instead of a parent or someone else telling him to do certain things.”
At the EQtainment stand, sales director Jonathan Erickson explained the company’s toys. “The purpose of all of our products is to develop emotional and social intelligence.” he said. Erickson showed off a board game called “Q’s Race to the Top”. He said the game got his 4-year-old daughter to open up. “The biggest thing is her talking. And that’s the key of all this—getting her feelings expressed out. Like, 4Hey, what does it feel like to be sad? Or
how does it feel like to be happy?’”
It remains to be seen whether a game or toy can improve emotional intelligence. But toymakers are doing what they can to help parents in their efforts to raise well-rounded children.
How does PlelQ instruct children to learn?
A. By playing the role of a companion.
C. By taking photos with a camera.
What can be inferred about Woobo from Paragraph 3?
A. It is programmed to replace teachers.
C. It can get started automatically.
What does Jonathan Erickson think of his toys? A. They help kids express themselves well.
C. They are quite easy to operate. D. They can show their emotions clearly.
What is the best title of the text?
Toymakers are making profits in education
Educational toys sell well in the Toy Fair
Toys help to build emotional intelligence
Children celebrate the International Toy Fair
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Life comes in a package
Life comes in a package. This package includes happiness and sorrow, failure and success, hope and despair.
36 Experiences in life teach us new lessons and make us a better person. With each passing day we learn to
handle various situations Love
Love plays a great role on our life. Love makes you feel wanted. Without love a person could become cruel and violent. In the early stage of our life, our parents are the ones who show us with unconditional love and care. They teach us about what is right and wrong, good and bad. 37 It is only after marriage and having kids that a person understands and becomes sensitive to others’ feelings. Kids make a person mature and help us to understand life better.
Happiness and Sorrow
Materialistic happiness is short-lived, but happiness achieved by bringing a smile on others’ face gives a
certain level of fulfillment. Peace of mind is the main link to happiness. No mind is happy without peace. 38
Sorrow is basically due to death of a loved one, failure and despair. But these things are temporary and pass away quickly.
Failure and Success
Failure is the path to success. 39 Success brings in money, fame, pride and self-respect. Here it becomes very important to keep our head on our shoulder. The only way to show our gratitude to God for bestowing success on us is by being humble, modest, courteous and respectful to the less fortunate ones.
Hope and Despair
Hope is what keeps life going. Parents always hope their children will do well. Hope makes us dream. Hope builds in patience. Life teaches us not to despair even in the darkest hour, because after every night there is a day. Nothing remains the same. 40
Life teaches us not to regret over yesterday, for it has passed and is beyond our control, Tomorrow is unknown, for it could either be bright or dull. So the only alternative is to work hard today, so that we will enjoy a better tomorrow.
Life is a learning process.
But we always tend to take this for granted.
Enjoying a better tomorrow is your only choice.
It teaches us to survive and shows us a specific way.
Yet how to express our love is a totally different matter.
We realize the true worth of happiness when we are in sorrow.
We have only one choice—keep moving on in life and be hopeful.

When I was a child, I hoped to live in the city. I think I would be happy there. Now I am living in a city, but I miss my home in countryside. There the air is fresh, the water is clean or the mountains are green. Unfortunately, as the development of industrialization, the environment has been polluted. Lots of studies have been shown that global warming has already become a very seriously problem. The airs we breathe in is getting dirtier and dirtier. Much rare animals are dying out. 作文
One possible version:
As we all know, the Spring Festival is actually the Chinese New Year, always falling on the first day of the Chinese lunar calendar, However, few know the changes taking place recently.
Usually there are rich feasts for family reunion, but nowadays, people prefer eating in a restaurant. In addition, it’s becoming a trend to go traveling anywhere instead of just staying at home chatting or watching TV. Last but not least, many firecrackers used to be set off everywhere but to protect the environment, this practice is now only permitted in the remote countryside.
It’s certain that more and more new changes will be seen in the future, thanks to the rapid development of technology and economy. (118)
