Glovelies
Using a phone or palmtop computer with touch screens while wearing gloves has always been difficult. Well, with Glovelies, you no longer have to write text messages with frozen fingers. Mini Vax?
It is a tiny cleaner that you plug into (插入) your computer's USB port. Back in middle school, I went to live with my mother for two years on her farm. Whenever people hear that I lived on a farm, they immediately have an image?of dairy cows, tractors, hay, and overalls. Nothing could be further from the truth.
I wasn't on the kind of farm everyone imagines. I didn't feed cows?or pigs;?I didn't grow corn or wheat. I helped my mother raise llamas (羊驼). ? ? ? ?It is strange that such non-traditional livestock should be raised on a long-established farm such as ours, which has been in the family for generations. Our family did indeed raise traditional livestock for many decades. Then, fifty years ago, my great-grandfather decided to buy a llama. He must have learned that wool from llamas was more profitable than wool from sheep. The llama wool business turned out to be so successful, in fact, that my great-grandfather changed the family business to a completely-developed llama farm.
Before I?began to live?on the farm, I had many illusions (错误的观念) about rural life. What could possibly be easier than feeding and grooming (照看) some animals??After I?had settled into my new home, however, I realized that farm work was much more involved than I had expected.?Collecting manure (肥料), for example, doesn't seem so bad when someone else does it on TV, but I had to get up before dawn every day to finish that chore before catching the bus to school.
I don't mean to say that my life on the farm was a bad experience. I learned a lot about myself: for example, I'm not a morning person. I also learned about?llamas' habits,?such as spitting (吐唾沫) when they are unhappy. Most importantly, my mother and I got to spend a lot of time together during those years. Although I doubt I'll have a?career in?farming, I look forward to returning to the family farm for short visits.
25. Why did the author's great-grandfather want to raise llamas?
A. To please his grandchildren.
B. To learn about their habits.
C. To make more money.
D. To save their lives.
26. What did the author imagine rural life would be like?
A. It would be boring and tiring.
B. It would involve lots of laborers.
C. It would be very easy and relaxing.
D. It would be the same as what was shown on TV.
27. How did the author feel about his life on his mother's farm?
A. He was bored.
B. He was grateful.
C. He was excited.
D. He was disappointed.
28. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Returning to a family
B. Living in a big family
C. Growing up on a farm
D. Working on a traditional farm
C
Going for walks with my two-year-old son, I meet many nice people who ask what my job is. When I say that I teach at Swarthmore College, their faces light up, and the next question is, “What do you teach?” As they hear my answer “linguistics (the scientific study of language)”, they look confused. The smile on their faces tells me that they don't know what to make of my answer. If they are brave enough, they will ask, “So, what kinds of classes do you teach then?” Good question.
I have long been teaching pragmatics (语用学), a?branch?of?linguistics. It is primarily concerned with how the context (上下文) in which a sentence is said influences its meaning. What?“I'd love a glass of water”?means largely depends on where and when it is said. In a restaurant, it will probably be understood as a request directed toward the waiter. Somewhere out in a desert, however, the same sentence is more likely to be interpreted as an impossible wish. Thus, although the literal (照字面本义的) meanings of two sentences could be exactly the same, their communicative meanings could be very different.
Interestingly, in pragmatics you will discover a message can be well communicated though not literally expressed. This takes place when the speaker and the listener share common ground.
If you see a car stopped on the side of the road, and you have the following exchange with the driver, you both know you've said enough to get your points across:
Driver: Hi. I ran out of gas.
You: There's a Shell just down the road.
Obviously, the driver is really asking something like, “Could you tell me what to do?” Your reply implies that there is a place nearby where the driver can get gas. No further explanation is needed because Shell, the name of a gas station, is part of their common ground.
29. What do we know about the people in Paragraph 1?
A. They are familiar with the author.
B. They know little about linguistics.
C. They work at Swarthmore College.?
D. They hope to attend the author's class.
30. Why does the author say the underlined sentence has different communicative meanings?
A. Because their wishes are different.
B. Because their contexts are different.
C. Because their speakers are different.
D. Because their literal meanings are different.
31. Why did the car mentioned in the text stop?
A. To wait for someone.
B. To take a short rest.
C. To buy some gas.?
D. To ask for help.
32. How does the author mainly explain pragmatics?
A. By presenting research findings.? ??
B. By analyzing major causes.
C. By making comparisons.????????????????
D. By using examples.

More than an hour before the Denver Nuggets tip off against the Golden State Warriors, Denver's arena (赛场) is already filling up. Fans watch as Stephen Curry floats shot after shot from the farthest reaches of the three-point line. His shots easily find the basket. Curry then steps near half-court, almost 40 feet from the basket, and starts again.?“I have not seen him miss one!”?says Ty Hansen, a Denver Nuggets fan whose love for his team seems to fade (逐渐消退) with every move.
This kind of excitement has been on display in arenas across the nation lately. And that's just on the court. Sales of Curry's jerseys are up 500% this season, according to online retailer Fanatics. Industry experts credit Curry's $130 sneakers with almost single-handedly doubling Under Armour's basketball-footwear sales. “Steph's the face of the NBA,” says Curry's Warriors teammate Draymond Green.
It's exciting stuff for a guy who, next to most NBA players, seems very thin. Curry is six feet three inches tall. He's 27 but looks much younger. That's why major colleges ignored him out of high school. Curry ended up at Davidson, a small college near Charlotte, North Carolina. In 2009, he joined the Golden State Warriors.
Lately, the strategy for success in the NBA is to play fast and shoot more. That is, take lots of long-distance shots instead of carefully working the ball toward the big guys under the basket. As a result, teams today are taking and making more three-pointers per game than at any other time in NBA history. The game is moving faster than it has in more than 20 seasons.
These trends are a perfect match for Curry's skills. This season, he is making more than five three-pointers a game, more than the average for an entire NBA team 15 years ago. If he keeps it up, he'll break his own record for three-point shots made in a single season, which he set a year ago. “He's going to create a whole new brand of basketball player,” says Jerry West, a Warriors executive board member and Hall of Fame player.
33. What kind of feeling does Ty Hansen express in his words?
A. Worry.??????
B. Admiration.??????
C. Satisfaction.
D. Disappointment.
34. What does Paragraph 2 mainly want to tell us?
A. Curry has thrown himself into business.
B. Curry designed his own sneakers.
C. Curry will play for the NBA.
D. Curry is very popular now.
35. What can we infer about Curry's future?
A. It's hard to guess.
B. It seems uncertain.
C. It looks very bright.
D. It'll be decided by Jerry West.

A
Cynthia Moss has been studying elephants since 1972, when she started the now-famous Amboseli Elephant Research Project in Amboseli National Park in Kenya. An author, lecturer, filmmaker, and a fierce advocate for elephants — which face lots of threats to their survival, from droughts to human encroachment (侵略)?—?Moss is widely considered an expert on the social behavior of these creatures. A key finding from her studies is how much elephant survival depends on learned behavior.
As Moss has observed, for example, a baby elephant must learn how to use its trunk (鼻子). At first a young elephant will drink by kneeling (跪) down at the water's edge and drinking directly with its mouth. The habit of pulling water into its trunk followed by releasing that water into its mouth develops only after months of witnessing other elephants doing so.
On occasion, Moss will see a baby elephant stick its trunk into the mouth of its mother and pull out a bit of whatever plant material she is eating. In this way, the baby elephant learns what kinds of vegetation are safe to eat on?the savanna, where poisonous plants also grow.
Elephants live in family groups, each one headed by a matriarch (母象). This senior female teaches adolescent females by modeling proper care of younger elephants. One of Moss's most memorable observations in this regard involved three elephants. These were a matriarch, Echo, and two offspring: Enid, a ten-year-old female, and Ely, a baby elephant. Ely was born with deformed (畸形的) feet that initially prevented him from walking. Echo showed Enid how to care for Ely by staying close to him when he was feeding and sleeping and by running to his aid when he signaled his suffering. Ely not only overcame his early limitations, but he also grew up to be a confident young elephant.
Moss has brought interesting stories and information about elephants to an ever-expanding audience. She hopes others will in turn become advocates for the animals she admires and understands in ways few others do.
1. As an advocate for elephants, what is Cynthia Moss best at?
A. Feeding and raising elephants.
B. Getting along with baby elephants.
C. Saving and curing disabled elephants.
D. Understanding elephants' social behavior.
2. Which of the following is a baby elephant's inborn ability?
A. Using its trunk to drink.
B. Pulling water into its trunk.
C. Looking for food it can eat safely.
D. Pulling out food from its mother's mouth.
3. What does the underlined part “the savanna” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. A way baby elephants eat or drink.
B. A kind of food that elephants feed on.
C. A place that is covered with grass or trees.
D. A situation where elephants are hard to handle.
4. What had Ely experienced according to Moss's observations?
A. He narrowly escaped being killed.
B. He got a lot of help from his family.
C. He lived on his own for a long time.
D. He had difficulty in eating and sleeping.
5. Moss probably hopes more and more _____.
A. people can study elephants
B. wild elephants can be found
C. people can protect elephants
D. disabled elephants can survive

Is running a marathon in under two hours possible? Will a human ever be able to run that fast? Currently, the world record for the 42.195 km (26.219 miles) distance is held by Kenyan Dennis Kimetto. His time of 2:02:57 hours was achieved at the Berlin Marathon of 2014.
For many years, long-distance runners have been trying to get nearer and nearer to the magical mark of two hours. Studies published in the past by medical and athletic experts have come to the conclusion that running a marathon in under 2 hours can be done. They even see a time of around 1:57 as the fastest a human can ever run. However, we will have to wait at least a decade or longer for this to happen.
Many things must fit together to deliver an under two-hour marathon. An athlete would have to have the perfect body size and weight, the right running strategy and of course, the right nutrition. Today's most perfect runners come from Kenya and Ethiopia, countries that have dominated (统治) long-distance races for decades. East African athletes have long legs and lungs that can take in lots of oxygen. Training at high altitudes gives them a strong heart and a very large blood volume (容量).
Ideal weather conditions with cool temperatures and almost no wind will also be needed to attempt such a quick time. An ultra-fast marathon would only be possible on flat city courses, like Berlin or London, with few curves (弯道).
Since the beginning of the modern Olympic Games in 1896, athletes have tried to run long-distance races as fast as possible. In 1900, the marathon world record was around 3 hours. In the following 30 years, men were able to reach a mark of 2:30. As time went on achieving faster times became more and more difficult. In the last 15 years, for example, the world record has improved by only 3 minutes.
On the other hand, some experts think that such fast performances will only be possible with the help of illegal drugs or substances (物质). In the past years, several East African runners have been tested positive and many of them banned.
6. For how long has the new marathon world record been held?
A. More than 2 years.
B. About 15 years.
C. Around 30 years.
D. Nearly 100 years.
7. What are Paragraphs 3 & 4 mainly about?
A. The benefits of running a marathon.
B. The conditions for an under two-hour marathon.
C. The development of modern long-distance races.
D. Perfect runners who can compete in a marathon.
8. Which of the following does the author agree with?
A. East Africans are born to be long-distance runners.
B. It's impossible to beat the marathon world record again.
C. More and more athletes are losing their interest in marathons.
D. It's easier to achieve a marathon world record in Berlin than in London.
9. What's the author's attitude towards running a marathon in under 2 hours?
A. Hopeful.
B. Doubtful.
C. Uncertain.
D. Uninterested.
10. What's the main purpose of the text?
A. To inform.
B. To discuss.
C. To educate.
D. To persuade.

27. B。 Most importantly, my mother and I got to spend a lot of time together during those years ... I look forward to returning to the family farm for short visits可知,和妈妈在农场生活的那两年对作者非常重要,他期待以后多回农场。

Each fall my wife and I go to visit our children可知,我们去看望孩子们要比他们来看我们“更容易(easier)”。
48. B。由It was hot there可知,因为天气热,我们把大多数“时间(time)”花在泳池里。
49. C。由上文的It was hot there和下文的over 40 degrees可知,Indio的天气十分“炎热(hot)”。
50. A。由cool和it doesn't get much over 33 degrees可知,此处是指当地人坚信深秋的“天气(weather)”是凉爽的。
54. C。此句承接上文提到的a layer of dirty brown haze,再由下文的having air you can almost taste可知,接下来的几天我们将要“呼吸(breathing)”的就是洛杉矶市区上空笼罩的雾霾。
55. C。56. B。 I wouldn't want to live anywhere in the US and Los Angeles, in particular可知,“我”不“喜欢(like)”洛杉矶,即使“我”必须住在美国,洛杉矶也不是“我”想“定居(settle in)”的地方。
57. D。 Hollywood, Long Beach and some good restaurants可知,洛杉矶有很多“吸引人的地方(attractions)”。

63. have come。
64. when。?
65. were organised。
66. with / among。 be popular with / among ...? 的欢迎”。
67. supporting。
68. attached。
69. rapidly。
70. growth。
