The old man walked with a cane (拐杖) slowly into the restaurant. His poor jacket, patched (打补丁的) trousers, and worn-out shoes made him stand out from the usual Saturday morning breakfast crowd. Unforgettable were his pale blue eyes that sparkled like diamonds, large rosy cheeks, and thin lips that held a steady smile.
???? He walked toward a table by the window. A young waitress watched him and ran over to him, saying,? "Here, Sir. Let me give you a hand with that chair."
???? Without a word, he smiled and nodded a thank you. She pulled the chair away from the table.
Supporting him with one arm, she helped him move in front of the chair, and get comfortably seated. Then she pushed the table up close to him, and leaned his cane against the table where he could reach it.
??? ?In a soft, clear voice he said, "Thank you, Miss."
??? ?"You're welcome, Sir." She replied. "My name is Mary. I'll be back in a moment. If you need anything, just wave at me." She handed him his cane, and walked with him to the front door. Holding the door open for him, she said, "Come back and see us, Sir!"

???? When Mary went to clean his table, she was shocked. Under his plate she found a business card and a note written on the napkin, under which was a $ 100 bill.

shows by the way you treat others. You have found the secret of happiness. Your kind gestures will shine

Jogging has become the most popular individual sport in America. Many theories have been put forward to explain the popularity of jogging. The truth is that jogging is a cheap, quick and efficient way to achieve physical fitness.
The most useful sort of exercise is exercise that develops the heart, lungs, and circulatory (循环)systems. If these systems are fit, the body is ready for almost any sport and for almost any sudden demand made by work or emergencies. Running trains your heart and lungs to deliver oxygen more efficiently to all parts of your body. It is worth noticing that this sort of exercise is the only kind that can reduce heart disease, the number one cause of death in America.
The only equipment that is needed is a good pair of shoes. Physicians advise beginning joggers not to run in tennis or gym shoes. A good running shoe will give the knee and ankle(脚踝)more stability(稳定性). Wearing good shoes will prevent the foot, ankle and knee injures and will also enable the wearer to run on different surfaces.
No other special equipment is needed; you can jog in any clothing you want, even in your street clothes. Many joggers wear expensive, flashy warm–up suits, but many people just wear a simple T-shirt or jog in last year’s clothes. In cold weather, several layers(层) of clothing are better than one heavy sweater or coat. If joggers are wearing several layers of clothing, they can add or take off layers as conditions change.
It takes surprisingly little time to develop the ability to run. The American Jogging Association has a twelve–week program designed to move from a fifteen–minute walk (which almost anyone in reasonable health can manage) to a thirty-minute run. A measure of common sense, a physical examination, and a planned schedule are all it takes.

A. because of jogging, heart disease is no longer an American problem
B. jogging can be harmful if the runner is not properly prepared
C. warm–up suits are better than T-shirts for jogging

One afternoon many years ago, I sat down on a bench in a park and watched a little boy, around 2 years old, running freely on the grass as his mother watched from a short distance. The boy would fall to the grass, get up, and without looking back at his mother, run as fast as he could as if nothing had happened.
When kids fall down, they don’t think of the fall as a failure. Instead, they consider it as a learning experience. They try and try again until they succeed.
While I was touched by the boy’s strong mind, I was also touched by the way he ran. With each attempt, he looked so confident and natural. He only wanted to run freely and to do it as well as he could. He was just being a child – just being himself – being completely in the moment. He never gave up. Each time he fell, he got himself back up again, as if he knew that falling down was simply a part of life.
He was not looking for others’ smiles, or worrying about whether someone was watching or not. He only wanted to run and to feel the experience of running fully and freely. I learned a lot from that experience, and have successfully brought that lesson with me in many parts in my life.

12. What can we learn from the story?
A. Falling down will make a person feel frightened from then on.
B. Falling down is the mother of success.
C. When others are watching, people fall down easily.
D. One will succeed if he / she is confident and never gives up.

Twenty years ago, British was far from being a 24-hour society. People often complained of the inconvenience(不方便)of shops closing at 5:30 p. m., and the average adult slept almost nine hours per night .
This has changed dramatically in recent years . Many supermarkets are now open all night , and pubs often stay open all day . At the same time, overtime has become common in many countries . As working hours increased, people began to think of sleep as a waste of time . Some tried to follow the example of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher , who was famous for sleeping only fours a night .
The latest research has shown that the current national average of seven hours’ sleep may not be enough . Scientists now say eight hours are needed , and every hour of lost sleep results in a slight , temporary drop in mental abilities . Furthermore , over a period of time the consequences of sleep loss can be quite serious . Nearly 25% of road accidents are caused by drivers falling asleep. The explosion of the US space shuttle Challenger in 1986 has been blamed on lack of sleep among technical staff .
Sleep , it now appears , is important for the maintenance if mental health . A few companies are talking this into account and providing rooms where employees can sleep for short periods when they are too tired to work efficiently . A new organization , the British Sleep Foundation , was also set up recently to help draw attention to the problems caused by lack of sleep . Sleep should not be seen as a waste but as a friend , say the organization’s founders .
13.Twenty years ago in Britain , _______________ .

B. People now sleep slightly more than they did 20 years ago .
C. Lack of sleep has little effect on mental abilities .
D. People should sleep twice as long as the present average .
