Can you write down a Chinese word being read to you? Sometimes it can be difficult when you find the word is not included in most dictionaries.
Lu Jialei, 14, from Hangzhou Foreign Language School, won the CCTV Chinese Character (汉字) Spelling Contest(竞赛) on Oct 18th, 2013. About 160 people competed. The host read a word to the contestant(选手), explained its meaning and gave sample sentences. The contestant was needed to write down the word.
Winning the contest was a “surprise” to Lu. “I was not the smartest one,” she said. “But I paid attention to details.” To prepare for the contest, she and her teammates studied the Modern Chinese Dictionary for 10 days. There are more than 56,000 entries (词条) including characters, words and phrases in it. She also had a secret weapon(武器). She studied how Chinese characters were formed.
“When others paid attention to the plot of a story, she looked at how writers use words and sentences to express themselves,” said Su Yunsheng, Lu’s Chinese teacher. Su is happy to see students like Lu find the beauty of Chinese language.

Many scientists will agree. This year the Nobel Prize gave the biggest prizes to findings on the smallest of scales.
Self-eating cells
This year’s winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine is from Japan. According to his research, cells (细胞) sometimes ―eat‖ themselves to keep healthy. In other words, cells can break down old ones and
use the useful parts to make new cells, or to fight off viruses (病毒). This new finding could help scientists fight many diseases.
Small machines
Three scientists from France, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands (荷兰) won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work on small machines. How small? Well, they are a thousand times thinner than a strand (缕) of hair. We can’t see them with only our eyes!
This technology will open a whole new world for us. For example, we could make very small robots in the future. A doctor could put them into our body. Like policemen, the robots look for the ill parts in our body, and send the medicine right there.
Super-state
As teachers said in your physics class, most things in the world are in three states: solids (固体), liquids (液体) and gases (气体). But at very low or high temperatures, things can turn into a strange state.
For example, break down things to their smallest pieces and we get ―atoms‖(原子). Like Lego
building blocks, atoms usually add up to become a 3-D thing, like a box. But atoms in the strange state don’t. They stay together and become a flat thing, like a piece of paper.
This is a new finding of three British-born scientists. And they won the Nobel Prize in Physics this
year. They hope to use things in this strange state to make new materials.
5.Which of the following is NOT true about ―self-eating‖ cells?

7.What can the tiny robots do for patients?
a. Call a doctor for them. b. Help people call the police quickly.
Look for the ill cells in their blood. d. Send the medicine into ill cells.
ab B. bc C. cd D. ad
8.What findings helped scientists win the Nobel Prize for Physics this year?
All the things in the world are in three states.
Things can turn into a strange state when the temperature is very high or low.
We can make paper by making atoms into the strange state.
Small things can add up to become a 3-D thing.

Since the beginning of human evolution(革命), men have migrated(迁移)across continents (大洲)in search of food, shelter, safety, and comfortable weather. People still move for these reasons, but new reasons for human migration are arising, such as job relocation(重新安置) and overpopulation.
Three million migrants are moving from poor countries to wealthier ones each year, and increasingly, their destination is a neighboring country in developing parts of the world. People are moving within the developing world for the same reasons as they migrate to wealthier nations. People from poor countries are going to less poor countries, fleeing wars and conflicts(冲突).
There are three main reasons why people move. The basic categories and percentages are as follows, according to the Current Population Surveys (CPS):
Family-related reasons account for 26.3%, including changes in marital(婚姻的) status, building a household and other family reasons; work-related reasons 16.2%, including job transfer, retirement, and other job-related reasons; housing-related reasons 51.6%, including new and better houses, better neighborhood, cheaper housing and other housing reasons; the remaining 5.9% of other reasons are attending college, the change of climate and health reasons.
Americans have been migrating south and west for years in search of better job opportunities (机会)and warmer climates. They have also been moving to places a little far from cities, in search of bigger yards and houses, lower crime rates and better schools. In 1950, nearly a fifth of the population lived in the nation’s 20 largest cities. In 2006, it was about one in ten. That’s why many American people say, “Big Cities Shrink(收缩,缩减)as People Move South, West.”
Between March 2005 and March 2007, 73.4 million Americans moved. Fifty-six percent of these moves were within the same country. Twenty percent were between counties but in the same state. Nineteen percent were moves to a different state. Some families even went abroad.
