“Mother, may I go down to the river? It has stopped raining now!” “Very well, Tom,” replied his mother, “only, be careful, and don’t stay away long!”
So, Tom ran off down the field to the river which flowed past his father’s farm in far north Queensland in Australia. It had been raining for ten days. Sometimes the rain fell fast and hard, then light showers would follow. The ground was all wet.
“All hot countries, such as where we live,” Tom’s father had once told him, “may flood at times. The sun has great power in the tropics to draw up the water from the sea. You know how the vapour rises into the air. The higher the temperature of the air, the greater the amount of moisture(水分) the air can hold. When the air cools, the vapour becomes clouds, or if it is near the earth’s surface, as mist(薄雾). When the air cools gradually(逐渐地), the rain drops are small and the rain is light. However, when the vapour drops suddenly in temperature, the drops are large and the rain is heavy.” “In some tropical countries, where the sun is always at work on large bodies of water, a very large amount of vapour collects in the air, and it may take days, or even weeks, to form rain drops and fall. It may then rain for days continually. When this happens, after two or three days, the water falls does not have the time to soak(浸泡) through the soil or be carried off in the streams; so it gathers on the surface, and then we have a flood.” When Tom got to the river, where the crossing was, he found the water rising rapidly. He thought about what his father had taught him about the floods, and decided to go back home at once and tell him the news.

Ray’s wedding( 婚礼) was successful. Everyone seemed to have had a good time. All evening, no one looked after the gift table. Who would steal anything, Ray thought. But his best friend Aaron didn’t think so. He walked away regularly from other guests to check on the gift table, making sure no one suspicious(可疑的) was hanging around it.
Ray and Julia went on a three-week honeymoon right after the wedding. When they got back, they opened all the gifts and sent out thank-you notes. But there was one problem. A married couple, Walt and Marry, had given nothing. This surprised Julia. Ray didn’t care if they hadn’t given a gift. He just needed to know whether to send a thank-you note. Ray called Aaron.
Aaron asked Ray if he had looked everywhere for Walt’s gift. Had he called up the wedding site to see if anything had been left behind? Ray said that he had looked everywhere and made a lot of calls that were fruitless.
Ray didn’t know what to do. "What would you do? "Ray asked Aaron. Aaron said he would call Walt up and tell him the problem. " You can't go wrong with simply being honest, " Aaron said Ray called Walt and told him the problem. Walt said that yes, he had given an envelope with $500 cash(现金)in it.
$500?! Ray said in surprise. That’s a lot of cash, Walt! "Walt admitted that it was, but he had gotten a fat raise early that year and Rays wedding was the only one he’d been to in quite a while. Ray thanked him and also apologized, Walt told him that it was" only money.”
When Ray told Aaron about Walt’s gift, Aaron laughed. "The only thief at the wedding was Walt! I have already stopped playing cards with him because I caught him cheating. And it was only a $10 pot (赌注总额)! I’ m sure I told you about that.”
“Yes, you did tell me, "Ray said. But, of course, he had to send Walt a thank-you note anyway.

Who has seen Yeti? This mysterious human-like animal lives in and around Asia’s high Himalayan Mountains. Or does he? For years, stories of the Yeti have attracted the interest of explorers and adventurer from around the world. In the local cultures of the Himalayan people, old stories of the famous Yeti are everywhere. Many stories say the Yeti is not an animal, but perhaps a half-ape(半猿),half human intelligent animal. No one can say for sure. What we do only know is that the Yeti is a powerful mix of fact and fiction.
Over 150 years ago, Europeans curious about the Yeti began to enter China. They were looking for something to prove that the Yeti existed. They hoped the photograph, or maybe even catch, a real-life Yeti. Over the years, many explorers saw large unexplained footprints in the snow. Several European climbers even reported seeing a hairy, ape-like animal from a distance.
The search for the Yeti didn’t become so popular later. Yeti fur“found”by various climbers was examined by scientists and proved to be unreal. People began to question the existence of the Yeti. In 1998, the Chinese government had to stop some activities of a nature reserve(保护区)which was doing great business by inviting tourists to buy tickets and hunt the Yeti. The reserve even offered large prices for anyone lucky enough to catch a Yeti! Clearly, basic human curiosity(好奇心)keeps the Yeti myth alive today. Plenty of unexplained footprints, bodies and stories continue to feed out curiosity as well. However, nobody can prove exactly whether the Yeti exists or not.(266 words)

In many countries, pets are well loved. In America, 95 percent of pet owners think of their animals as family members. About half buy them birthday gifts. And it’s a two-way street. People who have pets tend to have lower blood pressure. They also have a lower heart-disease risk.
Scientists are finding more and more evidence that animals can also help improve mental health. Some clinics have been using “pit therapy”(宠物疗法) alongside traditional medicine. Here is a look at some of the cures.
Rabbits
In one study, scientists told a group of stressed-out adults to pat a rabbit and a rabbit toy. The toy had no effect. Touching the living rabbit, however, reduced anxiety(焦虑).
Crickets(蟋蟀)
Animals don’t have to be soft and lovely to help. In a 2016 study, elderly people who were given five crickets in a cage felt happier after eight weeks. The act of caring of an animal seemed to make the difference.
Horses
Horses are among the most-studied therapy animals. In Europe, they have been involved in medical treatment plans since the 1860s. Activities like brushing the fur of a horse have been shown to reduce anxiety in people of all ages.
Fish
One of the study focused on people who had Alzheimer’s disease(阿尔兹海默氏病). When they dined in front of a tank of colorful fish, they ate more.
Dogs
Children who struggle with reading are less anxious when they read aloud to a trained dog. Their attitudes change and their skills improve.

For his eleventh birthday, Lin was given a gift that would shape his life. On that day his father took him to the Children’s Activity Centre and said he could choose any course that interested him. There was just one requirement: Lin would have to promise to study it for at least one year.
To that point Lin had had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. His mum once gave him a bag of stamps to encourage stamp collecting. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got once gave him a bag of stamps to encourage stamp collecting. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got him some paints hoping that Lin’s artistic side would shine through. Those paints were now under his bed, some still unopened. This time Lin’s parents would let him decide.
Lin’s eyes moved down the noticeboard that listed all the courses on offer. He stopped at“Photography”. He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Lin’s family weren’t poor, they weren’t rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money. He continued looking.
The next course to catch his eye was“Language Art”. He didn’t even know what that meant. His father explained that it taught people how to make public speeches. Lin, a shy boy, to him it couldn’t be worse.
Then he saw it.“Cooking”sounded like something he’d like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient, it could be done alone and it was also creative.
Based on Lin’s hobby history, his dad had doubts(疑惑),but he agreed. Much to his parents’ surprise, Lin kept his promise. He studied cooking at the Centre every Saturday, and practiced at home, making delicious meals for his family. Everyone looked forward to birthdays, when they could eat his cakes. Lin got great satisfaction from the pleasure his food brought to others.
The months turned to years but his hobby never became different again.
Now Lin is an adult and runs a wonderful restaurant. When customers say they enjoy his meal, he still gets the same pleasure he did as a child, and remembers the special gift he received all those years ago.

Alexis, 17, sat quietly in the passenger seat of her dad’s car. She looked out of the car window, enjoying the view of wildlife. Then a deer came into sight about 200 yards in front of them. “Dad, there’s a deer there!” Alexis said. As the car moved closer, Alexis realized the deer was attacking a woman. Sue, a 44-year-old mother, had been out for her morning run. The deer had appeared from the tall corn and began following her. Having lived in the countryside for years, Sue knew that most deer got afraid by humans. But this deer moved closer, even when she threw several small stones at it. Sue knew she was in trouble. She went to pick up a stick for self-protection, but the deer charged. It lifted her with its antlers(鹿角) and threw her into the air. Within seconds, the deer had pushed her off the road.
When Alexis and her father pulled up, the deer was throwing Sue like a doll. Alexis looked into the woman’s terrified eyes, and before her father had even stopped the car, the teenager jumped quickly out of the car and ran toward the deer. She kicked the deer hard to get its attention so that it would leave the woman. However, the deer was not afraid at all. Then her father pushed the deer away from the woman.
Alexis helped Sue into the car, and then applied a piece of cloth to Sue’s injured leg. “We’re going to get you to a hospital,” Alexis said. Then she heard her father shout loudly. He had been knocked to the ground, his right leg seriously cut by the deer. Alexis took hold of a hammer from the car and ran to where her father lay on his back. She beat the deer’s head and neck with all her strength. At last, the deer ran away. Alexis got in the driver’s seat and sped toward the nearest hospital. She heard her dad’s breathing grow difficult because a lot of blood flew from his wounded leg.
After Sue was treated, she thanked her rescuers with tears. “You expect a teenage girl to get on the phone and call for help,” she says, “not to beat up a deer.”
Alexis’ father also thanked his daughter although it took many days for him to recover. And he said the same idea as Sue’s.

It was a cold winter night when the police officer Lee and the detective Smith were walking back to the police station. They saw a robber attacking an old woman on the road. Lee and Smith ran over to the robber immediately.
The robber saw them and ran away as fast as he could. Lee and Smith followed him for a long distance until the robber rushed into an underground station. Lee and Smith ran into the station and tried to find him. It was quite dark outside that night and they couldn’t see the robber clearly. But they remembered what his body shape was like.
When they went in, they saw six men in the statin. All of them had the similar build as the robber. Lee looked at them carefully, one by one.
The first man was arguing with an underground station worker. He seemed to be very depressed.
The second one was watching the fight between the first man and the worker. It seemed like he was quite interested in it.
The third one was quietly reading a newspaper. His face was hidden behind the newspaper.
The fourth one was running to warm himself up, as it was cold in the station.
The fifth one was waiting for the underground. He looked at his watch several times. He seemed to be in a hurry.
The sixth one was wearing a big coat, sitting on a bench and shivering
Lee finally found out which one the robber was. He whispered to Smith, “Look! The robber wanted to cover up his panting(气喘吁吁) by doing this.”

The Earth is faced with a serious power problem now and all of us are affected by it. Should we leave everything to the government, or can we do something to save power? The answer is clear if not us, who? Let us look at how you can save power at home.
Computer. More often than not, we do not turn off our monitors(显示屏) even after we have shut down our computers. And we often leave our computers on when we walk away to do something else. Keep the monitor and the computer switched off when you are not using them. Start doing this even when at work. You will help save some of the earth’s important power.
Air Conditioning: Put the temperature at the minimum or maximum strongest that you are comfortable with, depending on the season. Try not to put it at too-high or too-low temperatures. This helps you save lots of power.
Washers: Do you use your washing machine as frequently as you wish? Do you use your washing machine even when there are not many clothes to wash? Reduce the times of washing by cleaning plenty of clothes every time.
Television: Unplug(拔出插头) the power plug of your television set when not using it. This may not sound like a big deal but this little step will help oneself save power.
Fridge: Do you always put hot food into the fridge? Bring cooked food to room temperatures before placing it into the fridge. You can also spare power by bringing cold or frozen food out of the icebox a great deal ahead of the mealtime. Thus, you don’t need to heat it.

It’s a cold, grey Sunday afternoon in March. The light is slowly fading, but all over Britain people are working in their gardens. They’re digging, cutting leaves and planting new weeds. By summer, their gardens will be full of bright colors.
The British love their gardens. A British newspaper recently asked people for their opinions about them. Seventy percent of people felt it was important to spend time in the garden, and over half of these described gardening as the most enjoyable thing they ever did.
Only one in ten houses in Britain do not have a garden. You can, of course, just grow house plants inside or on your balcony.
Once it was only the very wealthy who had a garden. You can still see the huge gardens that surround historic houses such as Chatsworth House or Castle Howard. Ordinary people used their land to produce food to eat or sell, or grew herbs to make medicine.
In the nineteenth century, however, gardening became a hobby. About the same time, better transport meant people could buy different kinds of seeds and plants for their gardens. Although roses, sunflowers, onions and tomatoes are often grown in British gardens, they grew wild in other countries before.
In many villages and towns there are competitions for the best looked-after gardens. This year the winner was a little village in Northern Ireland. It’s already won four prizes for its beauty. People also take part in competitions to grow the largest vegetables, but don’t expect to win. Britain’s biggest carrot is almost six meters long! A newspaper asked people what they grew in their gardens. Look at the diagram which shows their answers.
