D. Answer the questions
Whether from the novels, TV show or movies, everyone knows Sherlock Holmes. His stories are among the most read material in the world, behind only the Bible(圣经)and the dictionary.
The famous detective stories were written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Though he studied medicine and managed to practise it, writing became his pleasure in life and made him famous all over the world. In addition to his gift in writing detective stories, he had a medical background that enabled him to be of service during wars and journeys to both Antarctica and Africa.
During his university years, Doyle found his studies dull but loved watching his unusual teachers. One of these was Dr. Joseph Bell, who liked to observe to find solutions to problems. While Bell could guess people’s jobs just by observing them carefully, he was also cold to his patients. And so Doyle’s famous Holmes was born a confident detective with a keen eye but an indifferent(冷漠的)attitude.
Doyle began to publish detective stories of Sherlock Holmes in The Strand magazine in 1891 and achieved great success. These exciting and enjoyable adventures attracted the British middle class who lined up to buy magazines and read them. Doyle, however, felt Holmes was blocking his desire to write historical novels and killed him off in 1893. Angry letters and protest failed to bring Holmes back until 8 years later.
Holmes continued being popular through new novels, BBC’s TV shows and the Robert Downey Jr. films. Some fans are even crazy about Sherlock Holmes. A group of fans called Sherlockians claim(宣称)that Sherlock Holmes was a real person and his stories are historical record. As they work to prove their claims and as books and films about Holmes continue to fill our homes, our favourite detective certainly lives on.(299 words)

“Dinging out”, or “eating out”, are phrases people use in Britain when they eat in a restaurant or a pub. Eating out is more popular in Britain today than it has been ever been. In 2006, for the first time ever, British people spent more eating out in restaurants and pubs than cooking for themselves. It seems that many British people are becoming increasingly interested in how good their food tates, and also how healthy it is.
However, eating out can also be expensive. Restaurants are more expensive than pubs, though many pubs serve very good, simple food. As we British people do no dine out every night of the week, eating in a restaurant is often seen as a special occasion(场合). When going on a first date and wanting to make a good impression on him or her, or if celebrating an anniversary or a birthday, then many people like to go to a restaurant to eat. People often eat in a restaurant before going to the cinema or the theatre.
Naturally, restaurants are greatly different in quality and price. However, almost all British cities have man kinds of food and culinary(烹饪的) styles to choose from including traditional British food, and all from the very cheap to the very expensive ---French, Italian, Indian, Greek, Thai, Japanese and many, many more. In fact, when asked what their favorite food is, more British people say an Indian curry than any other dish!
As well as dining in a restaurant, when people are too tired too cook after work, they often get a “take-away”. This means that they order from a take-away restaurant by phone, and then go to collect it and take it home to eat. Many take-away restaurants also deliver it to your house(if you are especially tired, or lazy!) . And you can normally find a take-away restaurant for almost any cuisine, the most popular are pizza(Italian), Indian and Chinese---and all you have to do is open the door, pay and eat!
88. British people enjoy cooking for themselves, don’t they?
89. How is the food served by many pubs?

D. Answer the questions
When I was in high school, I worked part-time helping Dad sell fruits and vegetables at a market. One day, as I was preparing the fruits, a little boy came by with his mom and sister. He was about eight years old, and the girl, six or seven. They were looking at the fruits in front of me. I heard the kids say to their mom in French.“They’re good!”I knew it was French because I can speak and understand it.
Then I noticed how the mom was picking the fruits. At first I thought she was really looking at the fruits because she was facing them. But then I noticed how much she had to feel and smell each one as she picked them out. And she often asked her son if it looked okay, but looked way above where his face was. Putting what I saw together, I was sure she was blind.
Both of the kids continued to help their mom pick out the fruits. The son made sure the fruits were not obviously bad, and the daughter handed them to her mom. The woman then felt each one and smiled, and the daughter would put them into their basket. The kids were smiling while helping their mom pick the fruits out.
Their smile and gentle manner moved me in a way that never happened before. It was so beautiful to see such young kids so willingly help. Most kids that age would be picking out candies or toys in a store for themselves, instead of helping their mom pick out fruits as the two kids did.
It was great to see the moment with my own eyes, but not so great because I didn’t tell the mom how beautiful her children were in their language. This is what I feel sorry to this day.

D. Answer the questions.
The American high school author named Juliette Turner has published her third book aimed at middle school readers. With her new novel That’s Not Hay in My Hair, she has become a new star in the world of publishing.
Turner is just 18 years old. After she finished fourth grade in New York, she moved to Cooke County, Texas, with her mother where she started a new life working with horses and cattle and her writing career.
“My mother and I were the only people living there,” Turner said. “It was just the two of us breaking the ice on the cow-water trough(奶牛饮水槽).”
Turner’s mother, Janine Turner, is a famous actress in the US. Life in Cooke County was not as glamorous(令人向往的) as the life she had lived before. But for Turner, rural(农村的) life gave her a lot of material to write about.
That’s Not Hay in My Hair is unlike Turner’s first two books. “Everything that happened in the book actually happened in the lives of my mom and I.” she said. The adventures were too crazy to believe, but it all happened exactly how it’s written.
Indeed, Janine Turner was one of the first people to read the book. “I’ve been too busy doing my own things before. She’s written these books all by herself. I didn’t even read this one until it was finished,” said Janine, “She has an amazing power.”
As Turner is thinking about her upcoming college life, she hasn’t decided whether her adulthood will be spent in a city or in the country.
“I will always be a country girl at heart,” she said. “I love the country life. It is where I feel at peace and at home. I don’t know where life is taking me at the moment. But I will always return home to the country and to my mom. It’s where my roots are.”
88. Who did Juliette Turner’s new novel That’s Not Hay in My Hair mainly aim at?
89. When and where did the young author start her writing career?
90. Life in Cooke County was not the same as the life the girl had lived before, was it?

93. What does Juliette Turner mean by saying “It’s where my roots are” in the last paragraph?
D. Answer the questions.(12 分)
Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter. He developed a way of painting called abstract art. This art uses colours, shapes and lines. He had many ideas about colour. He believed that colours communicated certain qualities and that the colours that surround us have a powerful influence on us. Most of us have a favourite colour and this favourite colour makes us feel good, too.
Kandinsky thought that yellow was a warm exciting colour that could make us feel happy. In comparison, blue was a peaceful colour that could make a person feel more relaxed. The colour green brings peace and stillness and makes us feel close to nature. White he thought was a colour associated with harmony, silence and cleanliness, while black was linked to grief darkness and the unknown. Red can boost our energy and is linked to improving confidence. Orange is a healthy colour with a fun side to it. Schools use bright colours to encourage children to take part in activity and learning.
Age influences our choice of favourite colours. Children like the colour yellow. As children become adults, yellow becomes less popular as a favourite colour. Older people seem to like blues and purples more than reds and oranges. This kind of knowledge about colours can be powerful in advertising and website design. It can have an effect on the success of these with their readers. If you are designing a website for children, the colour yellow would probably make it more successful. If you are designing a website for older people, the use of blues and purples would make it more successful than the use of yellow. It would seem that the power of colour is interesting as a subject.
Colour seem to influence more than we could imagine in our lives. It is interesting to note that different colours have different meanings in different cultures. Red is often thought of as the colour of danger, love and passion(激情) in the West. In China, red represents good luck. South Africa, it is the colour associated with death. In Western cultures, black is the colour associated with death, while in Japan, white is the colour of death. Purple is the colour of death in Thailand, but in the West, it is the colour of royalty, wealth and luxury.
89. Who developed a way of painting called abstract art?
90. Did Wassily Kandinsky believe the colours that surround us have a powerful influence on us? 91. Why do advertising and website design use different colours for different readers?
92. How can a website attract older people more according to the passage?

Have you ever wished you could change something about your body? If so, you’re not alone.
Many people use apps(手机软件) like MeituXiuxiu to edit photos before posting them on social media. Some teenagers are even having plastic surgery(整容) at an early age. Zeng, a senior 2 student from Chengdu, had a double eyelid surgery done this summer. She and many of her classmates believe bigger eyes look more beautiful.
As teenagers’ bodies grow and change, they become aware of the smallest flaw(缺陷) in their looks. They are very worried about it. This can affect their health.
According to Huxiu News, over 60 percent of girls refuse to take part in some daily activities such as going to school, because they feel bad about their looks. As much as 31 percent of teenagers do not want to speak up in class because they worry that others will notice their looks.
One of the main causes is advertising, TV shows and social media. Pictures of “perfect” faces and bodies are everywhere. They suggest that having large eyes, pale skin and skinny bodies is the only way to be beautiful. Magazines give tips about how to lose weight “in days”. Advertisements suggest that you should whiten your skin using certain products. And TV shows often make fun of overweight characters. Seeing all these things can make people believe that they should change their bodies.
So what should we do? According to Nancy Etcoff of the Harvard Medical School, “We need to help young people in many ways. These ways can include educating students about body confidence in school, as well as encouraging parents to talk to their kids about this topic. After all, beauty comes in all shapes and sizes,” Etcoff said.

I grew up in a small town in Italy. One morning when I was 16, Dad told me I could drive him into a village, about 18 miles away, if I took the car to be serviced (保养) at a nearly garage. Thinking that I had just learned to drive, and hardly had the chance to use the car, I agreed happily. I drove Dad into the village and made sure to pick him up at 4pm. Then I drove to a nearby garage and dropped off the car. Because there were still a few hours to be left, I decided to watch movies at a theatre near the garage. But, when the last movie finished, I was two hours late. I was afraid of the result being late. I thought if Dad knew what I had done, he could never let me drive again. So when I drove up the place where we had planned to meet and saw Dad waiting patiently on the corner. I told him that I had come as quickly as I could, but the car had needed some special repairs.

“What do you mean, Dad? I’m telling the truth.”

He had let his whole team down, His stupid mistake made him angry. His team lost the game because of him. He was really worried that his coach may kick him off the team.

Agatha Christie was one of the greatest British crime writers. She introduced the public to her literary character, the famous Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot in her crime novel in 1920. In total she wrote 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, a billion copies of which have been sold in English. Her books have been translated into many different languages ,including Chinese.
Each story she wrote involved a mystery that had to be solved, but perhaps the greatest mystery is where she went for those 11 days. At the time of the disappearance in 1926, she was 36 years old and married to Archibald Christie. Her mother had died in the beginning of that year and her husband had left her alone to deal with her mother’s death. So she was very lonely and it seemed as if she might not be coping well emotionally.
In the middle of that year, her latest book was published and the book reviews loved it! Unluckily, soon after her book was published, her husband told her he was having an affair with a young man and was going away for the weekend to be with her. On Friday, the 3rd of December 1926, Agatha Christie kissed her daughter who was asleep upstairs and drove away from the house. Her car was later found abandoned(被遗弃的) on an empty road near a lake and so people began the search for the talented writer. It was 11days later before someone recognized Agatha at a spa hotel in Harrogate. She had been living there using another name all that time. On her return, she never said much about what had happened.
Over the years, many people guessed why she disappeared. Some people said that she was upset with her husband and lost her memory as he was having an affair. A few people even thought that it was a publicity(宣传) trick to make sure that her newly-published book would sell well.
To this day no one knows for sure what happened and why. While books and even a movie have been made about the mysterious 11 days, it would seem that even the great detective Hercule Poirot would not be able to solve this mystery!
