My mother is the sweetest person you would ever want to meet. She was always bright and selfless. She is also someone whose 36 is being damaged and whose identity is being lost slowly because of Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默症). For me, it is a slow letting go and a 37 process. Although she couldn’t 38 herself, she at least still knew her immediate family. I knew the day would come when that, too, would 39 and finally, about two-and-a-half years ago, that day came.
My parents would visit us almost daily and we would have a pleasant time, but one day there was a 40 missing. My mother no longer 41 me as her daughter. We hugged and cried and neither of us wanted to 49 this magical moment. I knew it could disappear as quickly as it came. She said she always felt a 50 to me and that I was nice, but that it had come to her suddenly that I was her child. We felt 51 . I took this 52 from God and savored (享受) it, even if it were to last just for that moment. We had a special connection again.
53 my mother’s condition has continued to worsen, she remembers who I am and it has been a year since that 54 afternoon. A month ago when we had another visitor, she started stroking my hair and told them 55 , “Did you know that she was my baby?”

Jane Austen ever popular
This summer, the UK will honor its favorite writers, Jane Austen (1775-1817), by making her the face of the new £10 note. In the 200 years since her death, Austen’s fame has increased from the modest amount she enjoyed in her lifetime to the global fame she receives today.
And yet Austen’s work is so very English that it’s rather strange she should be so popular all over the world. Her novels are so of their time that it’s remarkable that she’s still appreciated in this very different age. Her most famous works -including Pride and Prejudice, the one for which she is most known-are set in the world of the English gentry (贵族阶层)in the late 18th century.
Most of her fiction is about young women of that time. Women of the gentry could not work so their chances of happiness or even basic living depended upon finding a husband. This is a very serious subject matter, of course, but the joy of Austen’s stories is her ability to make wonderful, but also touching, comedy out of something so serious.
Take Pride and Prejudice as an example. Elizabeth Bennet is one of six daughters in a family that struggles with money problems. Her mother wants to marry off as many of them as possible. The pushy and annoying Mrs Bennet is one of the great comic characters of English literature.
The main plot of the novel is driven by the love-hate relationship between Elizabeth and Mr Darcy, a wealthy aristocrat. At first, they don’t get on. Elizabeth finds Darcy too proud; she feels he thinks he is better than everyone else. She thinks that he looks down upon her family in particular. Darcy, while admiring Elizabeth, believes that she has taken unfairly to him. The pleasure of the novel is reading how these obstacles are overcome and how the comical and unexpected ending is achieved.
If we think about this story, it’s obvious why Jane Austen is still popular 200 years after her death, and why readers can still identify with characters from the long dead world of the 18th century English gentry. Although there have been many changes since that time, it’s still the greatest challenge in life for men and women to find the partner of their dreams.
It can be concluded from Paragraph 2 that the author ______
A. believes Jane Austen’s works were ahead of their time
B. thinks that everyone should read Jane Austen’s books
C. has doubts about Jane Austen’s popularity all over the world
D. is surprised that Jane Austen’s books are still so famous
According to the article, Pride and Prejudice __________
A. has a sad and unexpected ending
B. deals with a serious social issue in a lighthearted way
C. centers on poor people’s struggles in the 18th century
D. tells readers that everyone can succeed through hard work
According to the article, Jane Austen remains popular today because______
A. readers enjoy reading love stories about wealthy aristocrats
B. readers are attracted by the way people deal with obstacles in the stories
C. readers can always find something new from her novels
D. her works deal with problems many of today’s readers still face
The article is mainly written to ______
A. tell us why Jane Austen was chosen to be on the new £10 note
B. introduce the story of Pride and Prejudice
C. explain why Jane Austen is still popular today
D. introduce Jane Austen’s creative writing style

Researchers at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, California found that a 12-minute bed-side visit with a dog can help reduce anxiety levels by 24 percent in heart failure patients, compared to a 10 percent drop when patients had a visit from a human volunteer, and no drop in patients who had no visit.
Results of the 76-patient study were presented last week at the American Heart Association’s yearly Scientific Sessions in Dallas, Texas. The study was supported by the Pet Care Trust Foundation, a non-profit(非赢利)organization which promotes human-animal interaction and connection. In the study, effects of dog and volunteer visits were compared with those of volunteers only, and with patients who had no visits and stayed at rest. Heart pressures were monitored and patients were asked to answer a list of anxiety assessment questions before and after the visits. Although critical pressure measures also fell, suggesting improved heart fun_ction, the most obvious reaction was seen in anxiety levels.
“The first thing you notice is that the patient’s facial expression, changes to a smile and the stress of the world seems to be lifted off their shoulders,” study author Kathy Cole said. Feelings of disappointment and helplessness are common among heart patients, Cole said, and just three nights in a hospital is enough to make some patients feel anxious and uncomfortable. During the visit, the furry friend is allowed to lie on the bed next to the patient with its head within two feet of the patient’s. Most patients petted the dog, while others talked about the dog with human volunteers in conversation.
Dogs used in the study are specially trained animal-assisted therapy dogs that go through a series of trainings, assessments and certifications(认证)to qualify as therapy dogs. There are different kinds of dogs. Researchers used everything from Bernese mountain dogs to small schnauzers. However, a dog doesn’t have to be specially trained to have a calming effect on a person. In fact, the animal doesn’t even have to be a dog in order to help. “As long as the animal has meaning to the patient, or a relationship with the patient, it can help calm the patient,” Cole said.
62. We learn from the text that heart patients benefit most from visits by___________.
A. a volunteer on his own B. a well-trained dog alone
C. a non-profit organization D. a volunteer with a dog
63. The study shows that, for heart patients, __________.
A. their recovery depends on contact with animals
B. their heart pressure reduces if they stay at rest
C. their contact with animals improves their condition
D. their anxiety is reduced if they stay longer in hospital
64. According to Cole, the change of patients’ expression on the face indicates that_________.
A. they are mentally comforted
B. they are happy with the experiment
C. their treatment time may be shortened
D. their heart fun_ction is returning to normal
65. This report concentrates on__________.
A. the treatment of heart disease
B. the cure power of animals
C. the relationship between dogs and humans
D. the promotion of human-animal interaction

To tell the truth, I don’t remember seeing Mom actually read her old Bible. As far as I could tell, it just sat on the nightstand (床头桌) next to her bed. And that was the best place for it, since it probably wouldn’t have survived any meaningful use anywhere else. The black cloth cover was ragged and time-worn, and its dog-eared pages yellowed. Once I accidentally knocked it off the nightstand, launching loose pages all over Mom’s and Dad’s bedroom. I expected a tongue-lashing for my carelessness, but Mom was so busy gathering the pages, gently smoothing them and returning them to their place in the book that she paid no attention to me.
Soon after I moved away from home, my sister Kathy and I bought a new Bible for Mom for her birthday. It was a black leather volume, twice as big as her old Bible. The pages were trimmed in gold, and there were maps, references and a complete Bible dictionary included within its pages. We even had her name engraved on the front with gold-leaf lettering. It was a beautiful book and Mom was touched and pleased. I remember watching her thumb carefully through the pages, admiring the quality of the paper and the clarity of the printing. From that day on, that Bible was the one she took with her to church and the one from which she read during the family Nativity Pageant (圣诞庆典). But for some reason, it never displaced the old Bible from its place for honor on her nightstand. And that bothered me a little.
“I don’t know why you keep that ratty old thing,” I told her as we prepared to pack it among her most precious belongings for what would turn out to be the last of many relocations in her life—this time to warm Southern California. “That new Bible we got for you is the best that money can buy. You can’t even use this old one anymore.”
Mom smiled at me weakly and sat on the edge of her bed, carefully rapping the old Bible in an equally old, equally shabby white cloth.
“Just because a thing isn’t useful anymore, that doesn’t mean it isn’t valuable,” she said softly and deliberately. “You look at this and see an old, worn-out book. However, I see the gift your father gave me on our wedding day. I see the friend that was always there to provide me with strength and comfort when your father served at the front. I see the storybook from which I read stories to all of my children, and the book from which you all read your first Bible poems”.
“This Bible has been in the family as long as we’ve been a family.” She continued, caressing (爱抚) it through the shabby white cloth. “Even though it isn’t especially useful anymore, there is still value in what it represents. At least, there is to me.”
Suddenly it occurred to me that she wasn’t just talking about the old Bible. We live in an age of fanatically obsessive utilitarianism (效用主义), Everything is disposable (用完即可丢弃的). If it’s old or odd-looking or not particularly useful, we toss it out. We forget that there is value beyond utility, and worth beyond “what’s in it for me right now.”
When Mom passed away, Dad gave me her “new” Bible. It’s among my most cherished possessions. It’s the Bible I read and take to church. It means a lot to me, and it’s really beautiful and incredibly useful. But I would trade it in a minute for Mom’s old useless Bible. I even have the perfect place for it: on the nightstand next to my bed.

D. Her mom had a strong love for the old Bible after owning the new one.
68. What did the author think of her mom’s packing the old Bible before moving to Southern California?
A. It was puzzling. B. It was inspiring. C. It was surprising. D. It was tiring.
69. According to the author, what is “utilitarianism”?
A. The most valuable things are the most useful.
B. Too much spoils, while too little is nothing.

As is indicated in the picture, an old man and his grandson are taking a walk in the street with masks covering their mouths. As the haze is becoming heavier and heavier, they find it hard to see the buildings and trees around them clearly.
What the picture conveys here is that air pollution is quite severe in China. Many factors account for this phenomenon. In the first place, vehicles sending large quantities of poisonous gases are a major source of air pollution. Furthermore, factories that release a great deal of smoke are also responsible for the poor air quality. Besides, burning materials like coal or oil for homes and offices is another major
contributor to air pollution.
Personally, to better the air quality, the government and the common citizens should make joint efforts. Riding and walking are wise options for public travels. Meanwhile, effective laws are supposed to be made to guarantee good air quality.
