A 9-year-old boy n Indiana stopped a would-be carjacker(劫车贼)on Christmas Day from running away with his father’s truck.
Kevin Cooksey was inside the One Stop Express gas station in Kokomo buying medicine for his wife when a man jumped into the driver’s seat of his truck. Cooksey had left the engine running and the door unlocked.
“When I saw my truck door open, I was like, ‘Oh my God, what am I going to tell my wife?’” Cooksey said.
His son, Larry, was sitting in the back seat. “As soon as he opened the door, I got frightened,” said Larry. “So I pulled out the gun and pointed it to his head.”
This was enough to make the carjacker think twice and he jumped out of the truck to try another car. Parked beside Cooksey’s truck was Kyle Sparling’s black Trailblazer. He too had left the engine running as he went into the store. The man got in Sparling’s SUV and took off.
“I didn’t know what to think, I just kind of ran outside and watched him,” said Sparling.
As the man sped off, Cooksey told Sparling to get into his truck and the two men began to run after him. The icy winter conditions made the driving difficult, but the pair followed at a safe distance as the carjacker drove in a “Z” way. After a few miles, the carjacker knocked into the sign of a local business, American Tool and Party Rental. Cooksey and Sparling called police to the place.
The police put 32-year-old Ollie Dunn into prison. Sparling’s car was damaged in the wheel, and the windscreen got cracked after the sign fell on it. “I was just glad he didn’t knock into anybody,” Sparling said. “That was my biggest fear, I think.”

Drugs are chemicals that change the way our bodies work. Some are medicines that help people when doctors prescribe(开处方) them. Many have no medical use or benefits. When taken, drugs find their way into the bloodstream. From there, they move to the brain and other parts of the body. In the brain, drugs may strengthen or dull the senses, change how alert(警觉) or sleepy people feel, and sometimes reduce physical pain. Because of the way these drugs work on the brain, they affect the ability to make healthy choices and decisions: Although drugs can
make people feel good at first, they can do a lot of harm to the body and brain.
People take drugs for the pleasure they believe they can bring. Often people try to talk friends into taking drugs just because they don’t want to be the only ones doing them. Some people believe drugs will help them think better, be more popular, or become better artists or athletes. Others are curious. And some people want to fit in and take drugs because of pressure. Many people use drugs because they’re depressed or think drugs will help them escape their problems. But drugs just mask feelings and problems; they don’t solve them. The feelings and problems remain and might even be worse.
If you think you—or a friend-—may be addicted to drugs, talk to a parent, your doctor or nurse. They can help you get the help you heed. Several kinds of treatment are available for drug addiction. The two main types are behavioral(helping a person change behaviors) and pharmacological(treating a person by using medicine).
It can be hard to kick drug addiction without professional help and treatment. It takes time and isn’t something that can be done alone—everyone needs support. Experts who help people with addictions are trained to help, not judge. To find a drug treatment center in your area, search online, or ask a doctor for advice.
28. What does Paragraph1mainly talk about?
A. How drugs affect users. B: Drugs can have medical benefits.
C. Ways to get over drug addictions. D. How drugs change our way of life.
29. Which of the following is not mentioned in the passage as a reason for people to take drugs?
A. To get pleasure. B. To reduce pressure.
C. To become more creative. D. To make friends.
30. What does the underlined word “mask” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Show. B. Cover. C. Avoid. D. Solve.
31. It can be inferred from the passage that .
A. drugs are necessary for lowering physical pain
B. drugs can help to make correct choices or decisions
C. it is impossible to get rid of drug addictions by oneself
D. drug addicts can be treated only in behavioral or pharmacological way

第二节 七选五部分(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)

When lining up at the checkout counter, the lines next to us always seem to be moving faster than the one we are standing in. Now The New York Times has put together the research to give you an understanding of the math and psychology (心理) of queuing. 36
It’s important to pick someone with a full cart. Every person requires a fixed amount of time to greet and clear out of the lane. And that amount of time is an average of 41 seconds per person. 37 Do the math. If there are five people ahead of you, each with 10 items in their carts, the waiting time will be 355 seconds. But if there is only one person ahead of you, with 50 items in the cart, the waiting time is 191 seconds. 38 For example, four bottles of the same milk will definitely go faster than four completely different items.
In some places, there may just be one line leading to several checkout counters. The person at the head of the line goes to the next available counter. This is known as a “serpentine line (蛇形排队)”. You should always choose it. 39
In fact, around 90 percent of people are right-handed, which means they tend to naturally go to the right. 40 It will give you a better chance of finding a faster line.
There are different ways to tell which customers will move faster.
It has also offered tips on picking the fastest line.
Even if one of the cashiers is slow, it won’t hold up an entire line.
So a better understanding of waiting can make it a bit more bearable (可承受的).
As a result, heading to the opposite direction helps.
The items in their carts are also important.
By contrast, the time that each item takes to be rung up is only three seconds.
