1. Match the sign with rules and warnings
Ask students to look at the signs with the rules covered and tell you what they think the signs are saying. Then check answers as a class.
Ask students to design some signs for rules and warnings. Share their finish signs with the class.
2. Read the list of rules and write sentences using must, mustn’t, should or shouldn’t.

初中阶段,常用的情态动词有can(could), may(might), must, have to(为半情态动词), shall(should), will(would), need等。情态动词无人称和数的变化,不能单独使用,必须与其后的动词原形一起构成谓语。(1)情态动词can, could。其用法如下:
1)表示能力(体力、知识、技能等)。如:
①Can you lift this heavy box?
你能举起这个重箱子吗?(表示体力)
②Mary can speak three languages.
玛丽能说三门语言。(表示知识)
③Can you skate?
你会滑冰吗?(表示技能) 此时可用be able to代替can。can/could只能用于一般现在时和一般过去时;而be able to则有更多的时态。如:
I’ll not be able to come this afternoon.
我今天下午来不了了。
当表示“经过努力才得以做成某事”时应用be able to,不能用can。如:
He was able to go to the party yesterday evening in spite of the heavy rain.
尽管昨晚雨很大,他还是能来参加聚会。 2)表示请求或允许。如:
—Can I go now?
我现在可以走了吗?
—Yes, you can./No, you can’t.
是的,你可以走了。/不,你不能走。
此时can可与may互换。在疑问句中还可用could, might代替,could和might不是过去式,只是语气更委婉,而且不能用于肯定句和答语中。如:
—Could I come to see you tomorrow?
明天我能来看你吗?
—Yes, you can./No, I’m afraid not.
是的,你可以。/不,恐怕不行。 3)表示客观可能性(客观原因形成的能力)。如:
This hall can hold 500 people at least.
这个大厅至少可以容纳500个人。
4)表示推测(惊讶、怀疑、不相信的态度),用于疑问句、否定句和感叹句中。如:
①Can this be true?
这会是真的吗?
②This can’t be done by him.
这不可能是他干的。 (2)情态动词may, might。其用法如下:
1)表示请求或允许。might比 may语气更委婉,而不是过去式。否定回答时可用can’t或mustn’t,表示“不可以;禁止”。如:
—Might/May I smoke in this room?
我可以在这个房间里吸烟吗?
—No, you can’t/mustn’t.
不,你不可以。
【注意】用May I...?征询对方许可时比较正式和客气,而Can I...?在口语中更常见。 2)用于祈使句,表示祝愿。如:
May you succeed!
祝你成功!
3)表示推测、可能性(不用于疑问句)。might不是过去式,只是它所表示的可能性比may小。如:
①He may/might be very busy now.
也许他这会儿很忙。
②Your mother may/might not know the truth.
你母亲也许不知道真相。
(3)情态动词must, have to。其用法如下:
1)表示必须、必要。如:
You must come in time.
你必须及时赶来。
在回答由must或have to引出的问句时,如果是否定的,不能用mustn’t(禁止;不准),而要用needn’t或don’t have to(不必)。如:
—Must we hand in our exercise books today?
我们必须今天上交练习本吗?
—Yes, you must./No, you don’t have to/needn’t.
是的,必须今天上交。/不,不必。 2)must是说话人的主观看法,而have to则强调客观需要。must只有一般现在时,而have to有更多的时态形式。如:
①The play isn’t interesting, I really must go now.
这部剧不好看,我现在真的得走了。
②I had to work when I was your age.
我在你这个年纪时就得工作了。 3)表示推测、可能性(只用于肯定的陈述句)。如:
Your mother must be waiting for you now.
你母亲现在一定正在等着你。
(4)情态动词need。其用法如下:
need作情态动词时,常用于疑问句、否定句。在肯定句中一般用must, have to, ought to, should代替。如:
You needn’t come so early.
你不必来这么早。 【注意】need作实义动词时,有人称、时态和数的变化,后面只能接带to的不定式。如:
He needs to finish his homework today.
他今天得完成他的家庭作业。【话题呈现】
