Some dances gain more popularity than others because they can be performed to different kinds of music and the steps change accordingly. One such dance is waltz.
There is a basic form for waltz, which you can see in this drawing of a dancing couple. The man places one arm around the woman’s waist and she places her opposite hand on his shoulder. Then, they stretch their other arms out from their bodies and clasp hand. If someone tries to teach you a formal kind of dancing, chances are your teacher will start with the waltz.
There are lots of different kinds of waltz, all performed to different types of waltz music.? The music might be fast or slow but what they all have is a?regular one-two-three, one-two-three rhythm.
The traditional form is the old-school waltz in which dancers turn all the time with a hopping(跳跃的), springy(有弹力的) step. This waltz has a slow, smooth, gliding step. There’s also the Mexican waltz, which moves much faster. If you have listened to Mexican waltz music, you can imagine how fast the dancers had to move to keep up with the music.
Today, ballroom dancing is almost considered a competitive sport; professionals perform different dances, each with strict rules. Everything from where the dancers place their hands to how they move is judged. In the glide waltz, dancers are judged by how smoothly they move. In the old days, if someone said, “ I can dance with a glass of water on my head,” you knew that person was a fine dancer. In the past, some people learned how to dance by reading books, while others studied with a teacher called the “dancing master.” How do people learn to dance today?
24. Which belongs to the basic form for the waltz?
A. The man places one arm around the woman’s shoulder.
B. The woman places one hand on the man’s waist.
C. The man holds the woman’s right hand by using his right hand.
D. The woman puts one hand on the man’s shoulder and the other hand was held by the man’s.

Next time you go shopping, keep in mind that there may be hidden cameras analyzing your habits.
According to a 2015 survey of 150 retail(零售商)managers from IT services company Computer Services Corporation, a quarter of all British shops use facial recognition software to collect data on shopper behavior. However, with concerns that face-recognition cameras “are kind of invasive(冒犯的)”, British retail analysis firm Hoxton Analytics has invented a novel way of measuring the number of customers – by filming their shoes. The technology can collect a large amount of information such as age, sex and social class from customers’ shoes through fixed cameras at about 50 centimeters off the ground. Since they point down, they are less invasive than facial recognition software. The system is also surprisingly accurate. It could make correct guesses about gender 80 percent of the time, which is better than some facial recognition technologies.
As our modern cities get larger and fuller, cameras and other technologies are taking over our public spaces and collecting data on us. Their purpose is to keep people safe, provide more efficient services and prevent overcrowding or other disasters. Smart CCTV cameras are introduced to operation centers to watch out for crimes, while smart streetlights turn brighter when someone walks beneath them.
But some people are not happy with the cameras as far as their privacy is concerned. “Very few of us have any real concept of what data smart cities are gathering,” said Renate Samson, of privacy watchdog Big Brother Watch, “When begin leaking data as soon as we wake up due to a simple click on Facebook for the latest news.”
Nick Millman, managing director at consultancy firm Accenture, thinks statistics are the key to the privacy concern. “We may get inspiration from Google,” he said, which is currently using Google Maps data to monitor the flow of traffic in Stockholm, Sweden. In this case, Google gets enough data to improve traffic flow but not so much that it shows individual journey patterns. “It is essential to add privacy controls to statistics so that you only see the data you need to know about,” Nick told the BBC.
32. What are the advantages of the new technology invented by Hoxton Analytics?
A. Close to ground and thus safer. B. Cameras used only and thus cheaper.
C. Less invasive and more accurate. D. More information collected and more welcome.
33. According to the author, cameras in modern cities ______.
a. cause a huge waste of public space b. make our lives safer and more convenient
c. help reduce the size of population in urban areas
d. are likely to help in the event of crimes and disasters
e. collect a large amount of information without permission
A. abc B. bcd C. cde D. bde
34. What is Renate Samson’s attitude toward the rise of smart cities?
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Uncaring. D. Confused.
35. How does Nick Millman support his opinion in Paragraph 5?
A. By giving examples. B. By stating arguments.
C. By analyzing scientific data. D. By providing research results.
