With over seven billion people living on our planet today,it’s easy to think that one person’s actions won’t make a difference. However, from personal experience, I can say that is completely untrue: each can make a difference—however small—to someone’s life.
Luckily, if you don’t want to get involved in a global campaign there are many more ways to make a difference. Often, it’s the little things that makes someone’s day. When you make yourself a drink, why not ask if anyone else like one? Or how about offering your seat to someone else on the bus? Whether or not they clearly thank you for your deed, they will certainly appreciate it. Elderly people, especially those living alone, appreciate it when people make an effort to say hello to them. Sending a card to a friend who is sick will brighten their day.
If you have time to spare, why not volunteer? Lots of places can benefit from an extra pair of hands! For the last seven years or so, I have volunteered every week. This has involved going camping, cooking sausages and playing treasure hunts—it’s great fun! Care homes, animal rescue shelters and local charity shops also rely on volunteers to help them out.
You may not make a change so big that it will be recognized by people all over the world, but it will be appreciated by someone, somewhere, that counts a lot. If more of us make an effort to make a small difference, the world would surely be a better place.
61. What does the underlined expression “makes someone’s day” mean?
A. Experiences different life. B. Finds someone’s advantages.
C. Considers someone good. D. Makes someone happy.
62. What’s the writer’s attitude towards taking up volunteer activities?
A. Sad. B. Interested. C. Surprised. D. Serious.
63. Care homes depend on volunteers to .
A. make the old there healthier B. help them solve problems
C. let more people get happiness D. make themselves get more money
64. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. One person’s actions can’t make a difference.
B. The old people expect others to say hello to them.
C. Sending a card can make the sick recover.
D. The author did volunteer work every day.
