By now, we are all aware that social media has had a big influence on our culture, in business, on the world-at-large. Social media websites revolutionized the way people communicate and socialize on the Web. However, aside from seeing your friends’ new baby on Facebook, or reading about Justin Bieber’s latest conflict with the law on Twitter, what are some of the real influences?
Social networks offer the opportunity for people to reconnect with their old friends and acquaintances, make new friends, share ideas and pictures, and many other activities. Users can keep pace with the latest global and local developments, and participate in campaigns and activities of their choice. Professionals use social media sites like LinkedIn to enhance their career and business development. Students can work together with their peers to improve their academic and communication skills.
Unfortunately, there are a few downsides too to social networking. If you are not careful, immoral people can target you for cyber bullying and disturbance on social sites. School children, young girls, and women can fall victim to online attacks which can create tension and suffering. If you are a victim of cyber bullying, do not take it lying down, but try to take appropriate legal action against the attacker.
Many companies have blocked social networks as addicted employees can distract themselves on such sites, instead of focusing on work. In fact, studies show that British companies have lost billions of dollars per year in productivity because of social media addiction among employees.
Also, what you carelessly post on the Net can come back to trouble you. Revealing (泄露) personal information on social sites can make users vulnerable (易受伤害的) to crimes like identity theft, stalking, etc. Many companies perform a background check on the Web before hiring an employee. If a potential employee has posted something embarrassing on social media, it can greatly affect their chances of getting the job. The same holds true for our relationships too, as our loved ones and friends may get to know if we post something undesirable on social networks.
Social media has its advantages and drawbacks as each coin has two sides. It is up to each user to use social sites wisely to enhance their professional and social life, and exercise caution to ensure they do not fall victim to online dangers.
54. Paragraph 2 mainly shows that social networks _________.
A. benefit users in various ways B. offer professionals good chances
C. guide users to make right choices D. help students finish their homework
55. Faced with problems caused by social media, some companies ________.
A. take legal action against the attackers
B. avoid posting embarrassing information
C. refuse to hire potential addicted employees
D. forbid the use of social networks during work time
56. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. We had better keep away from social networks because of its disadvantages.
B. Our carelessness when we are using social networks may cause us to suffer a lot.
C. We won’t get employed if we’ve posted something unreliable on social networks.
D. If faced with cyber bullying, we should hold it back to avoid conflicts with others.
57. The main purpose of this passage is to ________.
A. share experiences in using social media
B. provide some advice on social problems
C. raise public awareness of social problems
D. remind people to wisely use social media

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam has welcomed home two paintings by the Dutch master, more than 14 years after they were ripped (抢) off the museum’s wall in a nighttime theft. Museum director Axel Rueger called their return “one of the most special days in the history of the museum”.
The paintings were discovered last year by Italian police while they were searching suspected Italian criminals’ farmhouse near Naples for evidence of drug dealing. The two paintings were wrapped in cotton sheets. They were stuffed in a box and hidden behind a wall in a toilet when they were found.
The paintings were considered among the artworks most searched for in the world. After years in darkness, they can now shine again. They are back on display at the museum before being taken to the conservation studio for repair. Fortunately, they suffered remarkably little damage as thieves who had climbed up a ladder and broken a window to get into the museum in 2004 ripped them out of their frames.
“It is not only a surprise that the works have been recovered but it’s even more surprising that they are in relatively unharmed condition,” Rueger said.
The museum director was on vacation when the call came last year from Italian authorities who believed they had recovered the paintings. He didn’t celebrate right away. He’d had calls like this before.
“I was hopeful but also a little hesitant. Over these years, we had so many occasions when people phoned us, contacted us, claiming that they knew something about the whereabouts (下落) of the works and each time it was false, the trace went cold.” he said. “So ... the way has been full of disappointment.” But museum experts sent to Italy to check the authenticity(真实性)of the works quickly turned Rueger’s doubts into delight.
Rueger said the paintings are now back permanently at the museum, which is home to dozens of works by Van Gogh. “I’m very confident that everything is safe in the museum from now on,” he said.
58. How were the stolen paintings found?
A. The police found them by accident.
B. The arrested thieves gave information
C. Some drug dealers offered clues
D. The police knew the hidden place.
59. What surprised Rueger most about the lost paintings?
A. They were stolen at night. B. They were found at last.
C. They suffered little damage. D. The search took 14 years.
60. When Rueger got the call from Italian authorities, he _________.
A. didn’t believe them B felt quite relieved
C. planned to celebrate D. doubted the news
61. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 6 probably mean?
A. Reuger gradually lost interest in the search.
B. The number of false calls was greatly reduced.
C. Rueger felt cold because of too many false calls.
D. The chance to find the paintings became slim.

It was summer and I was with my new colleagues. I’d graduated from college just two months earlier and relocated (搬家) to Chicago to work there. I barely knew Chicago, but luckily, my co-workers were friendly. We became so close that 13 of us spent a weekend together at the lake and rented a boat.
On our last morning, I wanted to get back into the boat after swimming for a bit. But as I approached it, a force pulled me in. Within seconds, the lower half of my body was stuck between the boat’s propellers (螺旋桨). I reached down as the water around me turned deep red. Instead of feeling the flesh of my leg, my hand touched exposed muscle and bone.
It took nearly 45 minutes for help to arrive. Until then, a few of my friends worked together to keep me alive. The next morning, I woke up in a hospital room. I later learned that when I arrived at the hospital, a team of 20 specialists tried to save my leg, but the damage was too extensive (广泛的). They amputated it above the knee. At least I’m alive, I thought.
One year, six major surgeries, and countless hours of physical therapy later, I began to walk again. I tried my best to be upbeat and positive while relearning to walk, but even the simplest tasks made me frustrated. Sometimes, I just thought “Why me?”
I continue to try to embrace my new life, but I’ve had to make adjustments. I’d actually been training for the Chicago half-marathon before the accident. I still plan to get back into training for it, but for now, I’m just grateful I can walk.
I avoided showing my prosthetic leg (假肢) in public at first, but now, I wear shorts and dresses, whether I’m going out with friends or heading to the office. The only time I don’t wear the leg is in bed.
While my accident may have turned my world upside down, I’m still me.
62. What do we know about the author from the first two paragraphs?
A. She didn’t like Chicago.
B. She couldn’t swim at all.
C. She enjoyed working with her colleagues.
D. She often made careless mistakes.
63. What does the underlined word “amputated” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. treated B. removed C. broke D. fixed
64. How does the author feel about her prosthetic leg now?
A. She avoids showing it. B. She accepts it as it is.
C. She complains about it a lot. D. She is unwilling to wear it.
65. Which of the following words can best describe the author?
A. Enthusiastic and kind. B. Cooperative and generous.
C. Ambitious and independent. D. Courageous and optimistic.

第五部分:书面表达(满分25分)
Hi, Grown-up,
Good afternoon, everyone!
The topic of my speech today is “Cooperate with others”.
In our daily life and study, if we want to accomplish our work efficiently, we must all learn to cooperate with others. Cooperation can save us a lot of time and energy. Additionally, we can learn much from our partners by cooperating with them.
When we cooperate with someone we like, we will feel very happy. We can share our pleasure(joys)and sadness(sorrows)with him. But it challenges us to get along with others to cooperate with someone we dislike(hate). Besides/Moreover/What’s more, we should focus on our work, instead of(rather than)our partners. Perhaps in working together with him for a long time, we’ll learn(find out)that he is a man to get along well with.
How can we become a good partner? In my opinion, we should try to listen to others. If they make mistakes, we also try to point them out. Thirdly, we mustn’t embarrass others to make them in unfavorable position.
Thank you for your listening!
