Dear Strangers,
I remember you. Eighteen months ago, when my cell phone rang, you were walking into Whole Foods 36 to do your grocery shopping, just as I had been only minutes before you. But I had already 37 my cart full of groceries in the entryway, for my brother was on the other end of the 38 telling me my father had 39 an end to his life early that morning.
I started to cry and scream as my whole body 40 . I fell to the floor under the 41of what I had just learned. You could have kept on walking, 42 my cries, but you didn’t. You could have simply stopped and 43 my display of pain, but you didn’t. Instead, you surrounded me as I yelled 44 my sobs, “My father killed himself. He’s dead.”
I remember one of you asked for my phone. You needed my husband’s name as you searched through my 45 . I remember that I could hear your 46 as you tried to reach my husband for me, leaving an 47 message for him to call me. I recall hearing you discuss among yourselves who would drive me home in my car and who would 48 that person back to the store. You didn’t even know one another, and you came around me with the common 49 —to help.
In my 50 , I told you that I had a friend who worked at Whole Foods, and one of you brought her to me. And I even recall as I sat with her, one of you 51 a gift card for meals to Whole Foods. That gift card helped to 52 my family when the idea of cooking was so far 53 my emotional reach.
I never saw you after that. But I know this to be true: Because you 54 out to help, you offered a ray of light in the most 55 moment I’ve ever experienced. I will never, ever forget you.

Robotic surgery is one thing, but sending a robot inside the body to carry out an operation is quite another, which has long been a goal of some researchers to produce tiny robotic devices being capable of traveling through the body to deliver drugs or to make repairs without the need for a single cut, the possibility of which has just got a bit closer.
However, unlike the plot of one film—which featured a microscopic (微小的)crew and submarine(潜艇) traveling through a scientist’s bloodstream — this device could not be inserted into blood vessels(管)because it is too big. While other types of miniature(微型的) swallowable robots have been developed in the past, their role has mostly been limited to capturing images inside the body. In a presentation this week to the International Conference, Daniela Rus and Shuhei Miyashita of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology described a robot they have developed that can be swallowed and used to collect dangerous objects accidentally taken in.
To test their latest version, Dr Rus and Dr Miyashita designed a robot as a battery hunter, which might seem to be an odd(奇怪的) task, but more than 3,500 people in America alone, most of them children, swallow the tiny button cells used in small electronic devices by accident every year. To start with, the researchers created an artificial esophagus(食道)and stomach made out of silicone(硅胶). It was closely modeled on that found in a pig and filled with medical liquid; the robot itself is made from several layers of different materials, including pig intestine(肠), and contains a little magnet(磁铁). This is folded up and encased in a 10mm×27mm capsule of ice. Once this reaches the stomach the ice melts and the robot unfolds which is moved and guided with the use of a magnetic field outside the body. In their tests, the robot was able to touch a button battery and draw it with its own magnet, and during dragging it along, the robot could then be directed towards the intestines where it would eventually be gotten rid of through the anus(肛门). After it, the researchers sent in another robot loaded with medication to deliver it to the site of the battery burn to speed up healing.
The artificial stomach being transparent on one side, the researchers were able to see the batteries and visually control the robots. If not, that will require help with the help from imaging system, which will be a bit more of a challenge, but Dr Rus and Dr Miyashita are determined to succeed.
58. We learn from Paragraph 3 that _________.
A. the researchers did the experiment on a chosen animal
B. the robot took necessary drugs besides a little magnet
C. the actual size of the robot may be larger than the capsule of ice
D. digesting the swallowed batteries is difficult for children
59. What may the experiment mean to the medical world?
A. The surgeries will cost patients much money.
B.Fewer children will swallow the button cells.
C.A robot will be invented travelling blood vessels.
D. Patients will suffer less for some surgeries.
60. Which can be the most suitable title for the passage?
A. An Experiment on Robot B. The Fantastic Robotic Voyage
C. Tiny Robot, Significant Role D. The Exploration of Robot Technology
C
Conventional wisdom says that hardship can make us before our time. In fact, a new study suggests that violence not only leaves long-term scars on children's bodies, but also changes their DNA, causing changes that equal to seven to ten years of premature aging (提前衰老).
“Scientists measured this by studying the ends of children' s chromosomes(染色体), called telomeres.” says Idan Shalev, lead author of a study published in Molecular Psychiatry.
Telomeres are special DNA sequences (序列)which prevent the DNA in chromosomes from separating. They get shorter each time a cell divides, until a cell cannot divide any more and dies.
Several factors have been found to shorten telomeres including smoking, radiation (辐射) and psychological stress, such as being treated badly when young, and taking care of someone who is permanently ill.
In the study, researchers examined whether exposure to(暴露于) violence could make children' s telomeres shorten faster than normal. They interviewed the mothers of 236 children at the ages of 5, 7 and 10, asking whether the children had been exposed to violence between the mother and her partner, having been treated badly in a physical way by an adult, or bullying. Researchers measured the children's telomeres— in cells from their cheeks—at the ages of 5 and 10.
Telomeres shortened more quickly in children exposed to two or more types of violence, says Shalev. Unless such a pattern changes, the study suggests these children could be expected to develop diseases related to aging, such as heart attacks or memory loss, seven to ten years earlier than children of the same age.
Shalev says there is hope for these children. His study found that in some cases, telomeres can lengthen."Better exercise and stress reduction are three things that may be able to lengthen telomeres,” he says.
61. The new study found that ________.
A. hardship has a long-term effect on a child's mind B. violence leaves scars on a child's mind
C. violence can speed up a child's aging D. hardship can change a child's DNA
62. According to the passage, telomeres ________.
A. are at the ends of people's chromosomes B. can help prevent DNA from separating
C. can make a cell die quickly D. become shorter before they die
63. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Violence can cause quick cell division in children’s body.
B. Children at the ages of 5 to 10 are more likely to be exposed to violence.
C. Being treated badly will make a child's telomeres shorten faster.
D. Children who have shorter telomeres may have a heart attack earlier.
64. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Violence Aging Children’s DNA. B. Children’s Changing DNA Patterns
C. Violence and Telomeres D. The Function of Telomeres
D
Are you a different person when you speak a foreign language? That’s just one of the questions the New Yorker’s writer and native North Carolinian Lauren Collins explores in her autobiography, about her tough efforts to master French after marrying a Frenchman whose name — Olivier — she couldn’t even pronounce properly. When in French ranges from the humorously personal story to a deeper look at various theories of language acquisition and linguistics (语言学).
The couple met in London “on more or less neutral(中立的) ground: his continent, my language.” But the balance shifted when they moved to Geneva for Olivier’s work. The normally voluble Collins found herself at a loss — “nearly speechless.” The language barrier, and her dependence on her husband for simple things like buying the right cut of meat worsened her mixed feelings about “unlovely, but not ridiculous” Geneva. She comments, “Language, as much as land, is a place. To be cut off from it is to be, in a sense, homeless.”
Her sense of alienation (疏离感) leads to an examination of America’s miserable record when it comes to foreign languages, “Linguists call America ‘the graveyard(坟墓) of languages’ because of its singular ability to take in millions of immigrants and make their native languages die out in a few generations,” Collins writes. Educated in Wilmington, N.C., and at Princeton, she could — like the vast majority of Americans — only speak their mother tongue.
Eight months after she moved to Switzerland, Collins gives up on the natural acquisition of language and finally attends a French course. As she struggles with grammar and vocabulary, Collins notes smartly that vert (green),verre (glass), ver (worm), vers (toward), and vair (squirrel) compose a quintuple homonym (同形异义). “Although it’s difficult, French can try” she says.
French is actually considered among the easiest languages for an English speaker to learn, especially compared to Arabic or Mandarin Chinese. Collins, whose notably rich English vocabulary includes glossolalia (nonsense speech) and shibboleth (catchword or slogan), finds plenty of terrific French words to love. She writes, “English is a trust fund, an unearned inheritance (遗产), but I’ve worked for every bit of French I’ve banked.”
Unlike JhumpaLahiri, who became so hooked on(对……着迷) Italian and used it to write In Other Words, Collins’s goals for learning French were more modest, “I wanted to speak French and to sound like North Carolina.” She also wanted to be able to deal with chimney sweeps and butchers(肉贩), communicate with her in-laws, and “to touch Olivier in his own language.” She admits that she feels different speaking French, “Its austerity (朴素) made me feel more confused.”
Readers looking for the romantic spark of classic cross-cultural love stories featuring an outgoing American and a shy Frenchman will find flashes of it here.Among the many cultural differences the couple argue over are her enthusiastic American habit of applying the verb love to express enthusiasm for shoes, strawberries, and husbands alike. But there’s far more to Collins’ book than fantastic comedy, and those who have weathered(经受) linguistic crossings themselves tend to find particular resonance (共鸣) in its inquiry(查询,探究) into language, identity, and transcultural translation.
Arranged by chapters named for verb tenses, When in French works its way from The Past Perfect (Le plus-que-parfait) to The Present (Le Présent) and The Conditional (Le Conditionnel). Collins ends on a delightful note with Le Futur — fitting for a new mother about to move with her hard-won French husband, French language, and Swiss-born daughter to the French-speaking city of her dreams, Paris.
65. Which of the following statements is TRUE about When in French?
A. It describes how most American people learn French.
B. The author tells her experiences in a serious way.
C. It introduces a variety of theories about French learning.
D. The book offers a traditional way of learning a foreign language.
66. Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined word “voluble” in Paragraph 2?
A. graceful B. talkative C.dependent D. energetic
67. Why do Linguists call America “the graveyard of languages”?
A. Because other languages are prohibited in America.
B.Because American culture swallows up immigrants’ native languages gradually.
C. Because immigrants’ native languages contradict English in America.
D. Because only English-speaking people can immigrate into America.
68. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4 and Paragraph 5?
A. Collins’ English vocabulary knowledge contributes little to her French learning.
B. It’s terrifying for Collins to have French words in store for practical use.
C. Arabic or Mandarin Chinese are easier to learn than French for English speakers.
D. Collins has found out some effective ways of mastering French words.
69. The example of JhumpaLahir in the passage is given to show that _________.
A. Collins aims at using French for her daily life
B. Collins wants to apply French to serve her writing
C. it’s inappropriate for JhumpaLahir to write in another language
D. foreign language always makes learners feel complicated about life
70. Which of the following items are mentioned by the author of this book review?
① the theme ② the structure ③ the publisher ④ the popularity ⑤ the writing style
A. ①②④ B.①②⑤ C. ②③⑤ D. ①③⑤
A complex country where modern life sits shoulder to shoulder with poverty, India is a study in contrasts. Yet some common threads run through the country, creating a system of etiquette (礼仪) and tradition that is logical but difficult for first-time visitors to grasp. Understanding India’s customs and ways of interacting will help you avoid the unnecessary break of etiquette.
Social Order
India has a long history of rigid social order, defined by a 2,000-year-old caste (种姓)system. Today, caste does not have the same impact that it once did, but much of the social and business structure is rooted in the system. Families are paternal(父系的), with the father considered the head of the household. Corporations follow strict hierarchies (阶层). Teachers are greatly respected and considered holders of knowledge. When interacting, the Indian people are always aware of their spot in the social order. Introduce yourself to elders or higher-ranked officials first. Acknowledge each person individually in order of rank. Men typically shake hands with men and women with women, but cross-gender touching is discouraged.
Body Language
Although not all Indians are Hindu, a system of body part ranking arises from Hindu beliefs and is widely adopted throughout India. The head is the most important body part, while the feet are considered dirty. Always take off your shoes when entering someone’s home. Touching someone else’s feet is a sign of respect reserved for the most honored elders. The left hand is considered unclean. Never pass objects, eat or signal with your left hand. Living in crowded conditions, most Indians have a much smaller definition of personal space than those in the West. Incidental physical contact and sustained eye contact are common and should not be taken personally.
Dining
Dress modestly for meals, whether in a private home, restaurant or other location. Always refuse the first offer of snacks, drinks or other pre-meal treats, but accept the second offer. At traditional meals, women serve the men and then eat together after the men’s meal concludes. In modern India, especially at business meetings, everyone often eats together. Hierarchies are strictly observed, with the guest of honor served first and everyone else served by rank. Serve and eat only with your right hand. Leave some food on your plate to indicate you were satisfied with the size of the meal.
Dress Codes
In general, India is a conservative country with a strict sense of modesty. Female solo travelers are relatively rare and often attract unwanted attention. Minimize the chances for disturbance by dressing conservatively.Business wearing is traditional and often formal, although it is sometimes more relaxed during hotter weather. Always err on the side of formality for a first meeting and then follow your hosts’ lead for subsequent(随后的) events. When touring temples and sacred sites, people can’t expose their shoulders and lower body. Shorts and sleeveless shirts are discouraged throughout the country and are never acceptable at religious sites.

第二部分 书面表达 (满分25分)
请阅读下面短文,并按照要求用英语写一篇150 词左右的文章。
The 23-year-old son had his own driving license but he didn’t have a car of his own, and was dying to drive his father’s car. His father approved. He asked his son to drop him off before the son took the car to go to work. The father then wanted his son to pick him up at five in the afternoon so that they could go home together.
The son promised and went to work. After work he went to the cinema. Losing track of time, he continued to watch the film until seven.
Afraid his father would scold him for being late, the son arrived at the place and said,"Dad, I’m sorry I’m late but I worked longer than usual until seven.""Son, I phoned your manager,"his father replied."You finished your work at four."
The son looked down and said,"I’m sorry, but I went to watch a film.""Son, I’m very angry,"replied the father."But not with you. I’m angry with myself. Where did I go wrong as a father? Why did you have to lie to me? Take the car home. I will reflect on it as I walk."
The son followed his father, begging him to sit inside the car. But his father continued walking silently all the way back home. From that day on the son never again lied to his parents.

A son lied to his father when he failed to keep his promise. Instead of scolding his son, the father walked home alone to punish himself. When the son saw it, he felt guilty and never lied again.
From this passage, I completely understand the father’s reactions. The deep love and concern for his child are vividly conveyed in his self-criticism.
This story reminds me of an unforgettable experience. One holiday, I was supposed to attend a dancing lesson. However, it was cancelled because of heavy rain. Instead of staying at home, I lied to my mother and spent that whole afternoon hanging around with my friends. That evening when I got home, my mom, who actually had learned about the truth, told me that to pick me up after class, my dad was caught in the rain for nearly an hour and had a cold.
From this experience, I have realized that telling lies can do nothing but worsen our faults. Therefore, we should face our mistakes bravely and deal with the troubles before they get worse. No one will refuse to forgive a sincere person who has righted the mistakes.
