Some children are natural-born bosses. They have a strong need to make decisions, manage their environment, and lead rather than follow. Stephen Jackson, a Year One student, “operates under the theory of what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is mine,” says his mother. “The other day I bought two new Star Wars light sabers (剑). Later, I saw Stephen with the two new ones while his brother was using the beat-up ones.”
??? “Examine the extended family (大家庭), and you’ll probably find a bossy grandparent, aunt, uncle or cousin in every generation. It’s an inheritable trait,” says Russell Barkley, a professor at the Medical University of South Carolina. Other children who may not be particularly bossy can gradually gain dominance (支配地位) when they sense their parents are weak, hesitant, or in disagreement with each other.
???? Whether it’s inborn nature or developed character at work, too much control in the hands of the young isn’t healthy for children or the family. Fear is at the root of a lot of bossy behavior, says family psychologist John Taylor. Children, he says in his book From Defiance to Cooperation, “have secret feelings of weakness” and “a desire to feel safe.” It’s the parents’ role to provide that protection.
??? When a “bossy child” doesn’t learn limits at home, the stage is set for a host of troubles outside the family. The overly willful (太任性的) and unbending child may have trouble obeying teachers or coaches, for example, or trouble keeping friends. It can be pretty lonely as the top dog if no one likes your bossy ways.
??? “I see more and more parents giving up their power,” says Barkley, who has studied bossy behavior for more than 30 years. “They bend too far because they don’t want to be as strict as their own parents were. But they also feel less confident about their parenting skills. Their kids, in turn, feel more anxious.”
36. Bossy children like Stephen Jackson ______
??? A. make good decisions B. show self-centeredness
??? C. lack care from others D. have little sense of fear
37. The underlined phrase “inheritable trait” in Paragraph 2 means ______
??? A. inborn nature B. developed character
?? ?C. accepted theory D. particular environment
38. The study on bossy behavior implies that parents ______.
A. should give more power to their children
B. should be strict with their children
C. should not be so anxious about their children
D. should not set limits for their children
39. Bossy children may probably become????? .
A. relaxed B. skillful ??? C. hesitant D. lonely
40. What is the passage mainly about?
??? A. How bossy behavior can be controlled.
??? B. How we can get along with bossy children.
??? C. What leads to children’s bossy behavior.
??? D. What limits bossy children should have.

Prince Charles yesterday pledged (许诺) to reduce the royal impact on the environment through sweeping changes to his personal lifestyle and official schedule. The prince will replace carbon-heavy private jets and helicopters with scheduled flights and train services.
The move came as Prince Charles pushed business leaders to publish the environmental impact of their activities. He said, “Few accountants (会计) and business decision-makers ask, ‘How much of our critical natural resource is left? How many miles of polar ice cap have our businesses helped melt sea levels? How many species have we put at risk? How many homes will be flooded and how many people will die of thirst or starvation because of our activities?’ These are not comfortable questions, but, by God, they need to be asked.”
He added, “At the moment these costs do not appear in anyone’s books … Yet they are real, they are incurred (引起) now and in a relatively short time, the damage being caused may be beyond saving.” He said the world was “running up the biggest global credit card debt in history, but with little or no thought for how the bill (账单) will ever be paid.”
Flanked by (两侧有) the prime minister and business and community leaders at St James’s Palace, the prince said his new accounting for sustainability (可持续性) project would give consumers the power to choose products that caused less damage to the planet.
Duchy Originals, the prince’s food company, is taking measures to work out how much carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas is emitted (排放) in growing, processing and distributing its products.
The changes to the prince’s travel arrangements announced yesterday are part of a wider review of the carbon footprint associated with activities at all three of his residences: Clarence House in London, Highgrove and Birkhall on the Balmoral estate, as well as the activities of his 21 personal and 105 full-time staff.

There are tow types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy, the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.
People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things: the pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine, the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend(hurt) many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.
Although it fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrong doings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.

A. prevent and communication with them
B. show no respect and politeness to them
C. persuade them to recognize the bad effects
D. quarrel with them until they realize the mistakes
50. In this passage, the writer mainly .
A. describes two types of people B. laughs at the unhappy people

As of Tuesday, 73 countries had reported more than 26,000 cases of the new H1N1 flu virus. A WHO official, Fukuda, said these confirmed cases included 249 deaths.
Doctor Fukuda, an acting assistant director-general, says the virus continues to spread in North America. And there are increasing reports from South America as well as from other southern countries. Australia has had more than1000 cases, the largest number outside North America. The state of Victoria has been most affected.
But the US has had by far the most confirmed cases. More than 13, 000 were reported as of Monday, including 27 deaths.
The H1N1 outbreak began in Mexico in March. Mexico has reported more than 100 deaths. An unusual number of flu cases have been found in young people who were otherwise healthy.
The WHO has a flu warning system in which stage six means that pandemic is taking place. In recent days the UN agency has moved closer and closer to such a declaration.
As of Tuesday officials had not yet announced a change from stage five. But Doctor Fukuda said the public should understand what a pandemic means.
Fukuda: “By going to stage six, what this would mean is that the spread of the virus is continued and that activity has become established in at least two regions of the world. It doesn’t mean that the severity(严重)of the situation has increased or that people are getting seriously sick at higher numbers or higher rates than they are right now.”
Fukuda, the agency’s top flu expert, said the WHO has been working with the member states to prepare for a pandemic. Scientists are working on vaccines to protect against the new virus. Governments have been gathering supplies of anti-viral drugs.
But public health officials have also had to consider the risks if the public overreacts(过激反应)to a pandemic declaration.
